We Bring a Psychedelic Perspective to the Midweek and It’s Dan Fogelberg’s Second Airing as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, On Wednesday, December 21, 2022

Good morning, lovers of psychedelia! This is one of my all-time favorite playlists here. We also give the ridiculously underrated Dan Fogelberg a second airing as our featured singer-songwriter.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Yes, get on board the Psychedelic Express with us today to the innovators who managed to combine chemicals and composition. Some even lived to tell the tale. You’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, the Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, the Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dan Fogelberg

There’s a big campaign out there on social media to get Dan Fogelberg inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Considering the fact that they’ve inducted rap artists, ignoring a guy like Dan Fogelberg seems even more ridiculous. But then again, they didn’t induct Linda Ronstadt until she could no longer sing, and it took Carole King until 2021. These are WTF moments for me. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal. We love Dan Fogelberg here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we play his music for you tonight.

Midweek is here, meaning we’ll be on the downslide to the holiday weekend come Thursday. Life is good. And so is our radio station. We’re totally free 24/7 with no strings and no surprises. We play the best damned music on the planet. When we’re not running a program, The Music Mermaid is totally in charge of streaming. She spins he wheel and we see where it lands.

Saturday Brings the ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP, Volume Three of The Heartbreakers’ Fillmore Adventure, and Dan Fogelberg as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter as the Holidays Approach, December 17, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists across the globe! Hope you’re all doing well as we tee it up in The Mermaid Lounge this morning. We’ve got a pretty full slate peppering our great wide Open Stream (a little Tom Petty imagery there).

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

We’re talking real country here. And we’re also talking about the pioneers of country-rock who made it happen from the cross-fertilization center of the world: Laurel Canyon. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep at The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, the Marshall Tucker Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, The Desert Rose Band and more!

4:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA 1997, Volume Three NEW!

The third and final installment as we roll out the brand new Heartbreakers’ compendium of their legendary 20-night residency as The Fillmore House Band. They threw away the script and kicked ass, and every one of them felt it was the most creative opportunity the band had, and the highlight of their time together. For the first time ever, there are more cover songs on a Heartbreakers album than original compositions. That was by design as they chose to pay homage to those artists who inspired them. They are, in our humble opinion, the best cover band on the planet.

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dan Fogelberg NEW!

It’s time to flip the switch to a new featured singer-songwriter, and Dan Fogelberg is one of the most underappreciated. Except here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we made him one of the very first artists to have a ‘Spotlight.’ Today he starts a week in the spotlight as our featured singer-songwriter.

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat FINAL AIRING!

Tonight we bit a fond farewell to one of our favorite albums and bands as we close out this week’s featured album. We’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new selection.

Saturday is always a bit of a busy day here in The Mermaid Lounge, but we never have more programming than open stream in a 24-hour cycle. We also never run commercial advertising or emply overly-talkative DJ’s. We just play music. Free of charge 24/7. No lie. No surprises. No credit card. No personal information. Ever.

One Day Away From the Weekend With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ Multi-Artist EP and Carole King’s Final Airing as Singer-Songwriter, Friday, December 9, 2022

We are one day away from the official start of the weekend. Of course, some of us will toil in retail hell for one more day tomorrow, but we’re getting closer. We’ve got a lot of wide Open Stream today with some excellent programming tossed in for good measure.

Here’s your musical journey for today:

11:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Stories about the road, the air, the sea, and going places from Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Joan Baez, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield and more.

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Carole King

Today we bid a fond farewell to Carole King as our featured Singer-Songwriter, a woman whose music has been both an inspiration and a musical career builder. Tomorrow we welcome the late, great (and often troubled) Warren Zevon.

Before, in between and after we’ve got some great wide Open Stream, which has recently been significantly bolstered. This is not the place to detail that, but I will be writing a separate blog post on that very soon, so stay tuned! We’ve added some great artists we’ve been working on and bolstered the content of many others!

Whew! It’s a Crazy Saturday Here With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, Our AOW, Van Morrison ‘live’ in Belfast, and LIVE DEAD! October 8, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have a great line-up for you today. It’s another of those Grand Central Music Saturdays here, but we till give you far more Open Stream than anything else!

We’ve got that Travelin’ Jones going on early this morning!

Here’s your musical journey:

9:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

The traveling life has always been glamorized in music. Today, you’ll hear from Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Eagles, The Doors, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Joan Bae, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Odessy and Oracle by The Zombies FINAL AIRING!

It’s the swan song for this album today; our final airing of this great, long-underappreciated effort by The Zombies. But tomorrow morning we’ve got another great trip down Psychedelic Lane planned.

7:00 p.m. Van Morrison Live at The Grand Opera Houe, Belfast, Ireland, March 11 & 12, 1983

Van the Man recorded live in Belfast over a two-night engagement. Not always the most personable man to spend money on, but an amazing singer-songwriter and talent nonetheless.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, November 7, 1969

Another soundboard recording from the worlds most popular jam band in a totally historical venue. A rare repeat here, but it has been a while. It’ll be like new.

I’ll be off soon on a mission of mercy and then to the flats for another day in the wonderful world of retail. My destiny awaits as you hang out here with The Music Mermaid. As you know, she has impeccable taste in music. Enjoy your day.

Today’s Musical Journey Includes Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Some ‘Live’ Linda Ronstadt Later, Wednesday, September 7, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Today we’ve got the travelin’ jones with our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Linda Ronstadt ‘live’ from Budokan in Japan.

We start the day at 10:00 a.m. with our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP!

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Songs about the road have always been great fodder for musicians and we’ve got a great extended playlist on that subject today! You’ll hear Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Traveling Wilburys, Asleep At The Wheel, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield and more!

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan, March 3, 1979

It was one of those nights where I hadn’t yet decided on the second act for today. Then I saw Linda Ronstadt’s name trending on Twitter. Like many of her fans, I went into a panic. I was happy to find out that it was just an old interview where she skewered Rupert Murdoch…at a time where most of us hadn’t yet been exposed to what he was really about. She, however, was dating Jerry Brown at the time and was very much in tune. Needless to say, I was relieved. Therefore, you all have this great concert to go to tonight!

Life is full of risks. This is not one of them. This is a no-brainer. We play music all day and night, non-stop, completely free to the public. No. You cannot created “custom” playlists here. But that’s not what radio is all about. For me, the excitement came from wondering what song was coming next. No. You will not hear heavy metal, rap, hip-hop, disco or any related content here. We’re not trying to be all things to all people. But we’re totally free and we’ve got a 29,000-song catalogue at our fingertips, a ton of playlists and more coming. What’s not to love?

It’s Sunday and We’ve Got Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and The Dirty Knobs With Our Album of The Week, May 8, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers and Mothers everywhere! Today we celebrate Mother’s Day here in The Mermaid Lounge with our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and a brand new Album of The Week!

Today we’ve got Travelin’ Fever, even though we’re going nowhere!

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of the Week: External Combustion by Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs NEW!

Today we have the second full outing of music from Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, and some of it sounds very Pettyesque. And that is always a good thing from our perspective. It’s also to be expected since some of the songs were written while Campbell was lead guitarist and co-songwriter with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. That’s not to say that Campbell and his gang aren’t their own band. They surely are, but the influence is unmistakable.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We bring back our Travelin’ Fever EP today. It’s starting to warm up here and people are getting the travelin’ bug. Pretty soon, I’ll be bitching about the heat because here in New England, we go from 50 to 80, according to next weekend’s predictions. But I digress, today you’ll hear Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Travelin’ Wilburys, Asleep at The Wheel, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield and more!

Sunday is a day of rest and it’s Mother’s Day to boot. Allow me to say again, ad nauseum, that it’s a great day to tune us in. We’ve got Germany, the UK, France, Greece, Faroe Islands, Russian Federation, Chile, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Texas and California on already this morning. Tune us in.

It’s Another Rockin’ Saturday With Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, The Final Airing of “Luxury Liner,” Jeff Lynne In the Spotlight, and LIVE DEAD! Closing It Out Later, April 9, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! Saturday is always busy here in The Mermaid Lounge, and today is absolutely no exception. Read on for all the details!

We kick off the day with our great ‘Ode To Morning’ EP!

Here’s today’s line-up:

10:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

You know, we have our Here Comes The Night EP, so it was only fitting we make one for the morning. You’ll hear songs about morning from Joni Mitchell, The Move, Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Nina Simone, Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg,, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Muddy Waters, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Linda Ronstadt, Jonathan Edwards, Townes Van Zandt, Pure Prairie League, Bob Dylan, Chris Hillman, Badfinger and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Luxury Liner by Emmylou Harris FINAL AIRING!

This is it, music lovers, the final airing of Emmylou Harris’ Luxury Liner, undoubtedly one of the finest albums ever made. We’ve already got a brand new one waiting in the wings, so get on board this one today before it pulls out of the station!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jeff Lynne

Friend of Tom here. Jeff Lynne is one fine musician and, as the Heartbreakers will tell you, one fine producer. Today we give you his music as a member of The Move (his earliest band), the leader of Electric Light Orchestra, and as the famous Otis Wilbury.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Matrix Club, San Francisco, December 4, 1966

A repeat performance here by request from some of our Deadhead friends overseas. We haven’t played this particular soundboard since the end of 2020, so it’ll be just like new! Then again, no two performances were every the same for this band, not even on the same tour.

Kids, you get to sit at home today if you’re a 9 to 5 worker. Some of us will be toiling for one more day in retail hell. So, as long as this begins the weekend for most, it’s a great day to sit back and tune us in! We’re free 24/7 with no commercial interruptions and no credit card required. Just do it!

Today We’ve Got Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, With Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Live From Wembley Later, Friday, April 8, 2022

Good Morning, Road Warriors! Today we’ve got our Travelin’ Fever multi-artist EP up first, with some live Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young a bit later.

Here’s today’s line-up:

10:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

This one’s a bit different than yesterday’s ‘On The Map’ although some elements certainly are the same. This is more about hitting the road than locations with Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Dan Fogelberg, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, The Traveling Wilburys, Asleep At The Wheel, The Byrds, Mudcrutch, and more!

7:00 a.m. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Live at Wembley Stadium, London, November 4, 1974

My second favorite supergroup right here, right behind The Traveling Wilburys. They were always an adventure, so they should have been called Crosby, Stills, Nash & (Sometimes) Young. But their music is timeless in all their iterations.

Tune us in, folks. We are up and running 24/7 totally free of charge and totally free of commercial advertising. What more could you possibly ask for. Maybe that we play rap and hip & hop, but that’s not going to happen either.

We’re On the Downslide to the Weekend With ‘Nothing But Heartbreak’, Warren Zevon In the Spotlight, and our Album of The Week, Thursday, January 20, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got some great programming interspersed with all that wide Open Stream. The festivities start promptly at 11:00 a.m. EST.

Later today, we put singer-songwriter Warren Zevon In the Spotlight

Here’s your musical landscape today:

11:00 a.m. Nothing But Heartbreak: Various Artists

We start out the day with something I’m an expert in: The love thing. Not my strength. I decided to give it up in my old age. Clearly, I’m not the only one because the lovelorn dominate the music scene. You’ll hear from Carole King, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, the J. Geils Band, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Dan Fogelberg, Them, The Walker Brothers, The Pretenders, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Cat Stevens, The Bee Gees, Lucinda Williams and more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Raising Sand by Alison Krauss & Robert Plant

Our Album of the Week is back at mid-afternoon for it’s next-to-last airing. Many feel this was an unlikely musical duo, but it sure resulted in what I consider to be a masterpiece. I’m not the only one.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Warren Zevon

The excitable boy is back In the Spotlight. We haven’t heard this playlist for a bit, and the time is right. Warren Zevon, undeniably one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of his generation whose compositions became hits for several artists, struggled to break through as a solo artist. That is, until Linda Ronstadt began singing his songs on her albums and on stage. The result was a great career that spanned a quarter century until his untimely death at the age of 56. Tune him in tonight.

Before, in between, and after our programming (which we keep to a minimum), you’ll be listing to all that great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in charge. There are days when she even picks up a playlist or two on her own. You’ll never know unless you tune in. By the way, today we add the Republic of Korea and Lithuania to our list of listeners. Where are you and what are you doing today?

At Midweek, It’s Dan Fogelberg In the Spotlight, An Afternoon Trifecta-Fest, and The Beatles This Evening, Wednesday, November 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again at midweek. It’s Truck Day at the old slave shack, but I certainly have you covered musically in my absence. The Music Mermaid will see that everything is carried out to the letter.

The Beatles touched down in the U.S. on February 7, 1964, my tenth birthday. It changed everything.

Here’s your mid-week programming:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Dan Fogelberg

This guy’s name doesn’t always roll off people’s tongue, but it should. Fogelberg was a singer, songwriter, musician, and multi-instrumentalist who, for me, provided an oasis in the dry desert of the eighties music scene (absolutely not my favorite generation of music), along with a few others, most notably Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. People can debate an artist’s “best” album all day and night because that decision is subjective and personal. For me Souvenirs was not only his best album, but one of the best albums ever put on vinyl.

Afternoon Trifectas

Starting mid-afternoon, we’ll open each hour with three-in-a-row from one artist.

3:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris

4:00 p.m. Sam Cooke

5:00 p.m. Talking Heads

6:00 p.m. Van Morrison

7:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Early Years

The Beatles touched ground here on my tenth birthday. Up until that point, I had been listening to my sisters’ music pretty regularly. When the Beatles landed, it changed everything for me. In fact, it changed everything in the house because my sisters became fans pretty quickly as well. This is the other half of our House Band duo, and over the next few days we’ll be playing their stuff in chronological order.

Come on, people. Join your friends. Wednesday always seems to be fairly active early in the morning: Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Russian Federation, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and the UK are on so far. These people know good music when they hear it.
