Today we celebrate Bob Dylan’s 80th birthday. What programming we have is Bob. The rest will be open stream. We have a lot of Dylan programming available here in The Mermaid Lounge. We will be scheduling one Bob Dylan program every day for the rest of the week.

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Live at The Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento, California, June 12, 1986

It doesn’t get any better than this. Today’s Dylan feature is a great concert from the second leg of the True Confessions tour with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. This is a musical marriage made in heaven: one, if not the, greatest songwriter of all time backed by one of the best rock n’roll bands in history.

5:00 p.m. Not the Album of The Week: Desire by Bob Dylan

We’ve already had Desire as our album of the week many moons ago. We’ll be featuring a few of our favorite Dylan albums this week. This was the first time I ever heard the sweet voice of Emmylou Harris, who provides some amazing vocals on this masterpiece of an album.

It’s all Dylan all day today. In between, it’s our great open stream. No charge. No card. No personal information. Ever. It’ll be a fun week. Might as well make this your day to tune us in.

12:00 noon Album of the Week: Bob Dylan’s Desire (1976)

Desire was Bob Dylan’s 17th studio album back in 1976, for a little perspective on the breadth and depth of this guy’s career. The woman behind the album was his estranged wife, Sara, but the woman backing him up on the album was also a factor.

Desire was the very first time I heard Emmylou Harris sing anywhere and really paid attention. I was hooked. It is her hauntingly beautiful vocals that stand out for me, along with the gypsy violin played by another woman, Scarlet Rivera. As for Dylan? He’s Dylan, man.

This is a great album. Enjoy.
