It’s a Keep It Simple Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Today, With Our ‘Country’ EP and Warren Zevon’s “Excitable Boy” As Our AOW, October 10, 2021

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon NEW!

You know, there’s lots of negative things to talk about where Warren Zevon is concerned. He burned a lot of bridges. He had his demons. But he was, very simply, one of the best singer-songwriters on the planet. Linda Ronstadt proved that several times over. Excitable Boy is one of the best albums ever made. I can’t find one throw-away song on it. Produced by Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel, Zevon’s third studio album was released on January 18, 1978. Musicians who played on the album were some of the best-know studio musicians in the business in the 70’s including Russ Kunkel, Rick Marotta, and Mick Fleetwood taking turns on drums, and guitarists Danny Korchmar, Kenny Edwards, Bob Glaub, John McVie, Leland Sklar, and Waddy Wachtel. Background vocals were provided by Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, Jennifer Warnes, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, and Kenny Edwards. Enjoy.

If It’s Monday, It Must be Mudcrutch, And We Have Our Great EP ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ To Start Things Off, October 4, 2021

Good Morning, Petty Fans! We’re back on the train today with Mudcrutch Monday Madness! But that comes up later on. We kick it all off with our great new EP about water.

This was one of those EP’s that was so much fun to do it just kept going. It wound up being just over four hours of great songs with references to water in either the title, the lyrics, or both. You’ll hear Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Al Green, Gordon Lightfoot, Bonnie Raitt, The Stone Poneys, Valerie Carter, Elton John, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Loggins & Messina, Mudcrutch, Emmylou Harris, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Beach Boys, The Grass Roots, and more!

7:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness! The Full Catalogue

This playlist includes all of Mudcrutch, including the definitive live version of Hungry No More (a kickass song) recorded live at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016. It also includes the original version of Don’t Do Me Like That, which was originally a Mudcrutch song. This was the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with when he made his move to L.A. to make music. It was the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. And the rest, as they say, is history. EXCEPT, Tom Petty decided to bring Mudcrutch back to life in 2008 with its original members, including Tom Leadon on guitar (whose brother, Bernie, played with the Eagles) and Randall Marsh, his friend from Gainesville, on drums. As a member of Mudcrutch, Tom Petty was the bass player. Mudcrutch finally became a success in their own right. Their sound is awesome, and it’s different than The Hearbreakers even though the original Mudcrutch also had Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. If you’re a true Petty fan, then you already know Mudcrutch. If you’re just a lover of The Heartbreakers’ hits and you’re not a deep digger, this is your opportunity.

It’s Petty month here in The Mermaid Lounge. We won’t be obnoxious about it, but we will be playing more Tom Petty than usual, and that is always a good thing. We remain all about the music. Saturday Delivers A Great New Playlist, NOT The Album of The Week, The Actual Album of The Week, and LIVE DEAD, September 4, 2021

I was driving home from work when this idea came into my head and I wondered what the hell took me so long. I also have to tell you that I somehow feel this is simply the first volume. I thought of even more this morning. Here we have some great songs that have also been the beneficiaries of great remakes. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that is certainly the case in the music world. The best want to remake and pay tribute to the best songwriters and performers who have inspired their own music.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this great album. Get on it while you can. Tomorrow, we’ve got a brand new album to feature, and it’s one that just got its 50th Anniversary edition to boot!

7:00 p.m. NOT The Album of The Week: Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays

Last summer we added surf music to our repertoire, but we’ve not given it much of an audience this summer, regrettably I might add. As we work on the Labor Day Weekend, we’re going to play Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays. There’s a story behind this one. This band made one album, although the liner notes called them the premier surf music band of the sixties (when surf music first burst onto the music scene). The band is actually Mike Campbell and Ron Blair (of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), and Randall Marsh (drummer for Mudcrutch, another Tom Petty band). The did this anonymously because they didn’t want to detract from The Heartbreakers meteoric rise of 1997, the year the album was released. They didn’t particularly care if it even sold a copy (which it did; I have one). They did it because they love the sound of surf music.

The album was just picked up and re-released a few weeks ago. If you are a lover of guitars (and of Mike Campbell, simply one of the best guitarists on the planet), then there’s something about surf guitar music that can’t be explained. Tune it in and see for yourself.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, California, July 1, 1973

This is one of the few repeat performances we’ve played since starting LIVE DEAD three years ago, but it also hasn’t been aired since 2019. It’ll be like new, just like every live performance The Dead has done. We have several brand new never-before-played concerts in the bucket. We just need to get them ready.

Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge is pretty busy, and this one is no different. Give us a shot. We’ve got listeners from all over this morning, including Italy, Israel, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, France, Germany, The Russian Federation, Romania, Spain and even The Republic of Korea. I’ve seen many a concert in this legendary venue, which has now sadly been transformed into a mega-arena. It was supposedly done to improve the sound quality, but I think that’s utter bullshit. I digress. This show was just over three hours of sheer bliss. If you’re a Deadhead, come join the fun tonight.

I’m really excited to offer this album up this week. I could write a review of this, but I actually found one that’s perfect from the Louisiana Music Factory site, so here it is:

“Why settle for one great female vocalist when you can get three, especially when they’re stylish soul diva Irma Thomas, Tracy “Mother Earth” Nelson, and swamp rocker (and roller) Marcia Ball. The talented trio take the Sing It! title seriously, belting all hues of blues with satisfying sass and sincerity. Backed by a fine and funky band of Memphis-soul stalwarts and New Orleans session stars, the ladies shine both individually and as a team. Thomas, the longtime “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” struts her stuff on the Bobby “Blue” Bland classic “Yield Not to Temptation,” while Ball puts some patented bayou boogie, powered by her slinky piano lines, into her spotlight songs. Nelson repeatedly stops the show with her enormous, wraparound voice, transforming tunes like “In Tears” from simple country-flavored ballads into cathartic emotional experiences. It has been a while since we aired this, but it’s sooooo good. This collection includes outtakes that were never released, alternate versions of those that were and, of course, the actual final songs that appeared on Trio I and Trio II. We hear the term “supergroup” an awful lot, but like a lot of things in music, it is never a term applied to women.

We are applying it here in The Mermaid Lounge and have always called this brilliant musical alliance of friends a supergroup. That is what they were.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne FINAL AIRING!

This is it! This is the final airing of Browne’s brand new album, so don’t miss it. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you.
