What Could Be Better Than a Friday ‘Under The Influence’ and With Lucinda Williams In the Spotlight Later? February 18, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve made it to Friday. Yes, we have. And it’s looking good as the weekend approaches. Next to love, perhaps being ‘Under The Influence’ is the most sung-about condition. We’ve got it here for you today!

Come join the fun! They’re clearly ‘Under the Influence’

Here’s your Friday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Look, let’s face it. We’ve all been here at one time or another in our lives, and sometimes with legal substances…but sometimes not. So, we can all identify with the songs of The Doors, The Byrds, Donovan, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Glenn Frey, Linda Ronstadt, Jonathan Edwards, Small Faces, The Rolling Stones, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Jackson Browne, Harry Chapin, Emmylou Harris, The Band, Eric Burdon & War, Bob Dylan, The Fraternity of Man, Little Feat, and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams is a blues, country, rock and folk singer, songwriter and musician. Like so many other women of her generation, her early releases went ignored. However, as of today, Williams is recognized as one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her generation. Her commercial breakthrough finally arrived in 1998 with her album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, which fused blues, rock, country, and Americana music into Lucinda’s own signature sound. The album won the Grammy for the Best Contemporary Folk Album. The rest, as they say, is history.

The weekend is technically here, people. Yes. Yes. I know we have one more day of work (in my case, two days), but the end is in sight now. It’s time to start to mellow out. It would be a great weekend to get on board the music train here in The Mermaid Lounge. Come on. You know you want to.

We’ve Hit Our Midweek Stride With Our ‘Are You Ready For the Country’ EP, and Tom Rush In The Spotlight, Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Yes, we’re at midweek. It’s all downhill from here, as they say. We’ve got a great line up today as we wish Tom Rush a happy belated 80th birthday, and turn on the country spigot.

Real country. And country-rock. But no bad pop bands with fiddles here.

Here’s the midweek line-up:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready For The Country: Various Artists

Tom Petty was a great musicologist. He once referred to the glut of bad country bands as ‘bad pop bands with fiddles.’ None of that shit here today as we give you a great EP of uninterrupted music. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Flying Burrito Brothers and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

Tom Rush turned 80 years young on February 8th and we’re finally wishing him a happy belated birthday. I saw him at his birthday bash in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (the place of his birth) when he turned 79 last year, and he was fantastic. Today, we put Tom Rush, the artist often credited with heralding in the era of the singer-songwriter, In the Spotlight.

Get on it, folks. This is the toughest day of the week, and we’ll help you get through it with some great music. No charge for the service. Honest. We’re not kidding.

It’s Snowing Outside The Mermaid Lounge But The Music is Hot With Our New AOW by Gregg Allman and Our ‘Down in New Orleans’ EP, Sunday, February 13, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Well, here we are in New England. Yesterday it was 51 degrees and sunny. Today, it’s about 30 degrees colder and snowing. But it’s nice and warm here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming on tap.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is just one of the bands and artists you’ll hear today!

Here’s your Sunday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman NEW!

This is the first solo album by Gregg Allman, the leader, songwriter and main vocalist of the venerated Allman Brothers Band. In fact, he worked on his debut album while working simultaneously on the Allman’s Brothers And Sisters album. It was released on Capricorn Records in October of 1973. The album resulted in two singles, Midnight Rider and Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing. Midnight Rider was also covered by the Allman Brothers Band, but Gregg Allman’s version remains my favorite.

3:00 p.m. Down In New Orleans: Various Artists

Saving this great playlist for Mardi Gras week is a thing of the past. It should be played more frequently than once a year. Not only will you hear music that is central to the culture of New Orleans, but you’ll hear from some mainstream artists who were born in New Orleans. You’ll hear the music of The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Clifton Chenier, Lucinda Williams, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas. Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida and The Bon Temps, Boozoo Chavis, and more!

Get on the train, people. It’s about to pull out of the station and you don’t want to get left behind. We’ve got our usual worldwide weekend music lovers tuned in and it’s about time you joined them. It won’t cost you a penny. No lie here. We’re totally free, accept no advertising, and don’t spent a hell of a lot of time talking. We play music.

We’ve Made It To Friday and We’ve Got ‘The Female Species’ EP and Poco ‘Live’ on KBFH, February 11, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got an excellent programming plan today that includes not on one of our newest EP’s but a brand new live performance from Poco, a band that does not get enough credit for what they’ve done for country-rock.

Today we’ve got some ‘live’ Poco, one of the premier bands of country-rock.

Here’s your Friday line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

Nope. It’s not an all-girl EP, but it is a playlist that includes references to women, girls and ladies in the title, lyrics, or both. Some references are happy, some sad, but either way you’ll hear from Talking Heads, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jackson Browne, The Boogaloo Swamis, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Electric Light Orchestra, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Dylan, The Temptations, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Poco Live at Orrie de Nooyer Auditorium, Farleigh Dickerson University, Madison, NJ, November 2, 1973 NEW!

We should add that it is broadcast live on King Biscuit Flower Hour as well, one of our favorite radio stations in the history of popular music. Poco doesn’t get enough credit for its contributions to the development of the country-rock genre, but we’re going to change that as we build our music library. By the time this particular live event came around, a tour in support of their sixth album, Richie Furay, Jim Messina (who went on to play with Kenny Loggins), and Randy Meisner (who later became part of the Eagles) had already left the band. Only Rusty Young (pedal steel guitar, banjo and vocals) and George Grantham (drums, vocals) remained of the original members. They added Paul Cotton (guitar, vocals) and Timothy B. Schmidt (bass, acoustic guitar and vocals). We should mention that Timothy B. Schmidt would also later become part of the Eagles. For this particular show, they added two special guests who were also instrumental to the country-rock genre in Stephen Stills and Chris Hillman.

We’re all here waiting for you to join. And by that, I mean open up a tab and hit the link below. No subscriptions, credit cards, or personal information are required. Ever. We’re all about sharing music here in a world that gets uglier by the day. Music is soothing to the soul. Take advantage of us. We love it.

At Midweek, We’ve Got Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP & Bonnie Raitt In The Spotlight, February 9, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve reached our midweek stride here with our multi-artist ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, and Bonnie Raitt In The Spotlight later on.

Here’s today’s line-up:

10:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We’re back on the road with the musical road warriors today for an extended trip around the planet. You’ll hear The Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne, Edwin Starr, The Marshall Tucker Band, Dan Fogelberg, The Box Tops, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Canned Heat, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Janis Joplin, The Eagles, Guy Clark, Asleep At The Wheel, Jesse Winchester, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Emmylou Harris, Led Zeppelin, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, Willie Nelson, Carole King, Fats Domino and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Raitt has been serving up great music for half a century now, combining blues, country, folk and rock into her own great signature sound. Let’s also not forget that she’s one of the greatest slide guitar players on the planet. We rightfully put her In the Spotlight tonight. Be there or be square, as they say.

Before, in between and after, we run 24/7 with our great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid calling the shots. She does, as you know, have impeccable taste in music. Tune us in. We’re totally free with no strings and no hidden costs. We don’t ask for a credit card, a subscription or personal information. And we don’t give Joe Rogan a platform either.

Welcome To Sunday With Bobbie Gentry Owning Our Album of The Week and Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, February 6, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a great line-up for you today as we finally focus a bit on Bobbie Gentry, a musical pioneer who is often overlooked. No more. Today is just the beginning.

Remembered for her hit “Ode To Billie Joe,” Bobbie Gentry was so much more than that. But we start there today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry NEW!

This is another artist who has been high on our list, but when you’re a one-woman band here it takes time. Bobbie Gentry really just wanted to write songs to sell to others. She never really wanted to perform her own work. But singing Ode To Billie Joe was cheaper than hiring someone else to do it, so she went into the studio. The rest is history, and the album garnered several Grammy Awards. The problem is that people only remember her for Ode to Billie Joe, and she was so much more. We will begin to reveal the many facets of Bobbie Gentry today.

3:00 p.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

This is the second airing of our newest EP. Last week we gave you our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP, so this week we give you our songs that focus on the morning. You’ll hear Nanci Griffith, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Electric Light Orchestra, Harry Nilsson, Emmylou Harris, The Wallflowers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Norah Jones, Todd Rundgren, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Jefferson Airplane, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Foreigner, Gram Parsons, Taj Mahal, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, B.B. King, Hoyt Axton, Townes Van Zandt, Badfinger, Chris Hillman, Hot Tuna, Fairport Convention, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Association.

This would be a most excellent day to join the rest of the listeners from around the world. I must say, I believe we are also catching on here in the U.S. these days. Hell, we’re so much better than Spotify. We don’t charge you to be misinformed. And we don’t charge you for the music either. All you need to do is push the button below.

It’s Pouring Rain Here and We’ve Got Our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP On Tap Along With Buddy Holly In The Spotlight, Friday, February 4, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a great line-up on tap today including, appropriately, our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP on a day that is pouring rain (last week at this time, it was a blizzard). But that’s not all. Read on for details!

Today, we finally put Buddy Holly, a true founding father of rock n’ roll, In the Spotlight!

Here’s your Friday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

I promise I didn’t plan this to be aired on a day when it’s pouring out. It kind of just happens that way, but we do have it on tap, as we say. You’ll hear from Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, The Band, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Deep Purple, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Bruce Hornsby, The Grass Roots, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steely Dan, Tom Rush, Lindesfarne, Electric Light Orchestra, Gordon Lightfoot, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Mudcrutch, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tracy Nelson, B.J. Thomas, Al Green, Foo Fighters, and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Buddy Holly NEW!

It was 63 years ago yesterday, on February 3, 1959, that the plane carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. Richardson (also known as The Big Bopper) went down in Clear Lake, Iowa. It was “the day the music died” for Don McLean, as he relayed so eloquently in his song American Pie. We are not focusing on all three here, but we are putting Buddy Holly In the Spotlight. He and his band, The Crickets, had a profound effect on many who came after him. Although The Beatles only recorded one of his songs for an album, they used to fill their early live shows with several of his songs. His songs have also been covered by Linda Ronstadt, Eva Cassidy, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen and many others. Today, we give you Buddy Holly & The Crickets singing his own songs, but we close out the playlist with a few of our favorite covers as well as Don McLean’s opus, American Pie as the final tribute.

Great day to tune us in. Actually, I know I say that every day, but it is the truth, after all. We run totally free 24/7 with no commercial advertising. We’re all about the music, and nothing but the music. So help me, Buddha.

It’s Digging Out Day Here and We’ve Got Our New Album of The Week Plus a Brand New Motown EP, Sunday, January 30, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve not only got our brand new Album of The Week for you today but we’ve got a brand new All-Motown EP to get you through the afternoon!

Yes, folks. M is indeed for Motown.

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones NEW!

Without a doubt, one of my favorite Rolling Stones albums of all time. It was their 9th British and 11th American studio release. It was released on April 23, 1971, and was the first released on their new (and their own) Rolling Stones Records. It was also their first album without Brian Jones, who had died two years earlier.

3:00 p.m. M is For Motown: Various Artists NEW!

This is a companion EP to our ‘Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP. It gives you strictly Motown artists (but not all Motown artists because there is some music we simply do not play), including The Temptations, The Spinners, The Jackson Five, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Jimmy Ruffin, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Isley Brothers, Martha & The Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, The Marvelettes, Billy Preston, Mary Wells, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Eddie Kendricks, Rare Earth, Junior Walker & The All Stars, Edwin Starr, and many more!

This is a day of rest (yeah, as long as you weren’t in the snow belt yesterday), so you might as well take advantage of it and join your friends from around the globe. We’ve got a bunch on here this morning from Canada to Lithuania. Programming is only part of our day. The rest of it is filled with wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. Try it. You’ll see.

Sunday Gives Us ‘Blood On The Tracks’ As Our New Album of The Week, and The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two EP, January 23, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! Maybe you’re sleeping in; maybe not. But we never actually sleep here in The Mermaid Lounge. We blast out music on a global basis 24/7!

Mid-afternoon brings a little under five hours of the best of the mid-to-late sixties!

Here’s your musical landscape for today:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan NEW!

Dylan is another one of those guys who gives me fits. It’s difficult, if not impossible, for me to pick a favorite album. Is it Desire? Is it Blood On The Tracks? Is it Nashville Skyline? I don’t know. It varies with my musical mood, I guess. I have the same problem with The Heartbreakers and The Beatles.

This is Bob Dylan’s 15th studio album, released on January 20. 1975, so we honor this album very close to it’s 47th anniversary, written at a time when there was a lot of stress in Dylan’s personal life. Jakob Dylan once described this album as “my parents talking,” but his father insists it’s not autobiographical. Either way, this album logged in at no. 16 on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums of All Time. By 2004, it has risen to no. 9. It reached no. 1 on The Billboard 200 Chart, and no. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Give it a listen. It is undoubtedly one of Dylan’s very best.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The Sixties Rotations (volumes 1 & 2) were the very first playlists we ever put together for this station. They have both expanded to EP’s at this stage of the game, and today we give you the one that focuses on the mid-to-late sixties. You’ll hear The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Simon & Garfunkel, the Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Janis Joplin, The Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Four Tops, Vanilla Fudge, Sly & The Family Stone, The Zombies, The Doors, The Chambers Brothers, The Animals, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, Procol Harum, The Electric Prunes, Them, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, The Mamas & The Papas, and many more!

It is indeed a day of rest. And what could be better than joining your fellow global listeners on such a day? You don’t have to wait for programming. We run on wide Open Stream 24/7, so our button is never in the ‘off’ position. All you really have to do is click the button below. Go ahead. See for yourself.
