There’s nothing like a trip to Chicago to catch some blues. Been there on business several times and never failed to find a great venue to visit. Koko Taylor’s raw, powerful voice led to her title as Queen of The Blues. Koko was no delicate flower; she was a kic-ass, take-no-prisoners blues vocalist with attitude. And we love her in The Mermaid Lounge and give her the spotlight treatment today.

There’s nothing like Tuesday Bluesday to cut your teeth on a great radio station. We don’t infect the airwaves with commercial advertising or mouthy D.J.’s who like to talk through the first minute of every damned song. Instead, we rely on The Music Mermaid to take us through the day. As you know, she has impeccable taste in music.

11:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness!

We continue on with Tom Petty month by giving you the complete Mudcrutch catalogue this morning. They didn’t make it big as Mudcrutch, but they did morph into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Later on, Petty would reunite the band and make it count. But just because Mudcrutch wasn’t the main act, it doesn’t mean the music wasn’t fantastic. It was.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur came out of the Greenwich Village folk music scene and created a career that combined folk, blues and just a little bit of jazz tossed in every once in a while. She was one of the great ensemble singers of the seventies (along with Nicolette Larson, Valerie Carter, Wendy Waldman, and others) that everyone wanted on their records. Like the others, she also had a hefty solo career.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Gris-Gris by Dr. John NEW!

Here we have Dr. John’s debut album, released on January 22,1968. That’s when Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. introduced us to his alter-ego (that would be Dr. John), reportedly based on a 19th century voodoo doctor. The rest is history. Dr. John shows us his vision right off the top. This album is a great combination of New Orleans R & B and psychedelia. Fun Fact: The entire album was funded by money that Dr. John and his arranger made on Sonny & Cher sessions!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: John Lennon HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

We manage, finally, to pull one of these off on the very day as we celebrate the birthday anniversary of John Winston Ono Lennon, one of the greatest rock n’ rollers of all time and a visionary in his own right. We have music from his days with the Beatles, his solo work and his work with the Plastic Ono Band. Join the birthday celebration tonight.

It’s a day of rest. For those of you who’ve got the religion, remember that even the big guy took a day off. You should as well. Good Morning, Musicologists! We’re heading for the weekend with some great programming as we feature The Heartbreakers, and celebrate Janis Joplin’s life with her Spotlight feature.

We lost Janis on October 4th and Petty on October 2nd; today we celebrate them both.

This is one of The Heartbreakers most outstanding live shows full of their own great originals plus covers like Chuck Berry’s Around and Around, Little Richard’s Lucille, J.J. Cale’s Call Me The Breeze, and The Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth. The same qualities that made them one of the world’s greatest rock n’ roll bands also makes them one of the best cover bands. Recorded live and broadcast on Rockpalast.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Odessy and Oracle by The Zombies

This is the next-to-last airing of this fine psychedelic album so get in on it today. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday, and we’ll have a brand new selection come Sunday morning.

We lost one of the greatest female blues singers of all time on October 4, 1970 and today we celebrate Janis Joplin’s musical life by putting her In the Spotlight. This one has been on the “to do” list for some time, and we’re glad to finally be airing it.

Great musical day here in The Mermaid Lounge. The sun will be back out here in Boston after a couple of days of much needed rain. We’ll be flirting with 70 degrees after a cold spell. It won’t last long, so it’s a day to enjoy. Stop by the Lounge and we’ll take care of your musical itch.

We’ve got Neil Young and one of his most consistent back-up bands live for you at mid-afternoon. We haven’t aired this one for a while, so tune it in.

7:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix Live at The Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, CA, May 30, 1970 NEW!

Hendrix performed this one just a few months before his untimely death. It’s also brand new to the station; we’ve never heard it before ourselves.

Before, in between, and after we’ve got that great wide Open Stream, and a little later today, we’ll be adding music to that stream to make it even better. The Music Mermaid demands it. This was the last time I’ve been in a concert venue, and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I eventually lost the friend I saw the show with to COVID. I made this selection with her in mind today.

Before, in between, and after it’s our great wide Open Stream at the discretion of the Music Mermaid, who patrols the studio area with great pride. We run music on a 24/7 basis with no commercial interruption and no chatty DJ’s who just love to hear themselves speak. Oh, yeah, did I mention that we are completely free of charge?
