Good Morning, Folks! We are kicking off a brand new month in fine fashion here with our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP and some ‘live’ Allman Brothers Band bringing up the rear.

Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash hanging out in Laurel Canyon

Here’s Friday’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

A trip in the Wayback Machine with The Music Mermaid (instead of Mr. Peabody) to the 60s and 70s and some of the best musical cross-fertilization on the planet as country-rock was born. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Doors, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Carole King, James Taylor, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Souther-Hillman-Furay and more!

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, July 3 and 5, 1970

The Brothers are here for the holiday weekend, although I’m not the patriotic type to begin with and am now less so in the land of lost liberty. Nevertheless, we welcome the Allman Brothers back to the Lounge. We have’t played this one in a bit.

It’s going to be hot as Hades here today, although they did remove the cactus warning from my phone. Once you get past 85 degrees with me, it’s ugly. But it’ll be cool here in The Mermaid Lounge and you can feel free to kick back with some great music today!

We Are at Midweek With Our ‘In Your Dreams’ EP and Our New ‘Long Live the Queens’ Playlist, Wednesday, June 29, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We are already at midweek and we’ve got great stuff for you today, including our brand new ‘Long Live The Queens’ playlist. Read on for details!

The Queens make their debut at 7:00 p.m. this evening

Here is your midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. In Your Dreams: Various Artists

Dreams are funny things. Some people have them. Some don’t. But plenty have sung songs about them or we wouldn’t have nearly five hours of uninterrupted music from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Aerosmith, Crowded House, the Moody Blues, Van Morrison, The Eurythmics, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Nanci Griffith, The Electric Prunes, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, The Mamas & The Papas, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimmy Buffett, The Allman Brothers Band, Supertramp, Randy Newman, Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Widespread Panic, The Youngbloods, Jimmy Ruffin, Jackson Browne, Mudcrutch, Patsy Cline, Joe Walsh, Dusty Springfield, k.d. lang, and more!

7:00 p.m. Long Live The Queens: Various Artists NEW!

We feature four queens here for you: Linda Ronstadt, the undisputed Queen of Rock; Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul; Irma Thomas, The Soul Queen of New Orleans; and Koko Taylor, Queen of The Blues. Tune in for something really special here.

We’re here every day uninterrupted 24/7 at absofuckinglutely no charge to you. Your money is no good here in The Mermaid Lounge. This is all about the music. Get on board, people. You won’t be disturbed by advertising or overly-chatty DJ’s either.

Saturday Delivers Our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP, the Final Airing of “McCartney” and LIVE DEAD! Later, June 25, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s going to be a hot one outside today, and we’ll be matching that in The Mermaid Lounge with some great programming interspersed in all that wide Open Stream.

Cool your jets with ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ starting at 11:00 a.m.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

It’s promising to be a hot one here to day in the Boston area, so we’re inside cooling off with some music about all kinds of water. You’ll hear from Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, Neil Young, Elton John, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Steely Dan, Tom Rush, Johnny Rivers, America, Donovan, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: McCartney by Paul McCartney FINAL AIRING!

We bid a very fond farewell to this first solo Beatle effort today from one of the greatest musicians of all time. He’s still out there touring and singing and thrilling audiences everywhere. But alas, this is the final airing.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Dream Bowl, Vallejo, CA, February 22, 1969 NEW!

Mr. Peabody put us in the Wayback Machine for this one, vintage 1969 and another new show added to our list of Live Dead performances.

Here in The Mermaid Lounge, we have two strict rules: We never have more hours of programming than we do Open Stream. And we never charge for the music we play. We also don’t require you fill anything out or provide us with any personal information. Hell, we don’t even track you. We’re too damned busy finding new music.

Monday Rolls Around Again and We’ve Got Some ‘Live’ Guess Who, Jackson Browne In the Spotlight, and Some ‘Drivin’ Songs’ Later On, June 13, 2022

Here we are again from The Mermaid Lounge on another back-to-work day. If you’re working where you can listen in, just pull up a tab and make your day so much brighter right here.

It’s a ‘first’ here in The Mermaid Lounge as we kick off today’s programming with some ‘live’ Guess Who!

Here’s your back-to-work lineup:

11:00 a.m. The Guess Who Live at The Ambassador Theater, St. Louis, MO, May 6, 1974 NEW!

The Guess Who is, without a doubt, a fantastic band. We’ve got some of their stuff in our rotation, but we’re on the hunt for all of it. That’s where we found this gem. As we expand our horizons for the summer, we’re kicking off the day with this live performance which was broadcast on KSHE 95FM.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jackson Browne

It’s time to put Jackson Browne back In the Spotlight. It has been a while. Every time we hear this playlist we’re reminded why he’s considered one of the greatest song writers of all time.

7:00 p.m. Drivin’ Songs: Various Artists

And then, we close out the night with songs about driving. But it doesn’t stop there. Some of these songs may not actually be about driving, but they help you go just a little bit faster than you were originally planning. Hey, that’s why they’re driving songs. You’ll be riding with The Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, The Eagles, Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Golden Earring, CSNY, Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, The Kinks, The Byrds, The Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Rare Earth, Canned Heat, Bruce Springsteen and more!

Start your Monday with a little boost from The Music Mermaid here in the Lounge. We’ve got several new playlists to unveil this week, and we start today! We’re on 24/7 totally free of commercial advertising and at absolutely no cost to you. What’s not to love?

On Sunday, We Feature Our New AOW by Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth, Plus ‘The Female Species’ EP Later, June 5, 2022

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Living With The Animals by Mother Earth NEW!

It’s tough to find a decent photo of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth, believe me. We tried mightily but the best we could come up with was this poster. Etta James once called Nelson, “a bad white girl.” And she certainly is bad in the best sense of the word. One of the absolute best combinations in music happened when Ronstadt sang Tracy Nelson’s Down So Low, and you will hear Nelson’s version on this album. While Mother Earth is often presented as merely a vehicle for Nelson, that’s an unfair characterization. The band was more than that, and you’ll see that on this album.

3:00 p.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

Not to be confused with our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP. While we certainly include woman artists in this playlist, this one’s about the use of the word lady, girl, woman, chick, whatever the term, in the title, lyrics, or both. You’ll hear from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Talking Heads, Jackson Brown, The Boogaloo Swamis, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Electric Light Orchestra, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, The Temptations, and more!

Sunday. It’s a day of rest, people. Even the big guy (whomever that might be) took the day off from the entitled masses. That’s what you should be doing now. And what better way to spend the day than right here. Because life is too damned short to listen to bad music.

It’s Sunday and We’ve Got Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and The Dirty Knobs With Our Album of The Week, May 8, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers and Mothers everywhere! Today we celebrate Mother’s Day here in The Mermaid Lounge with our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and a brand new Album of The Week!

Today we’ve got Travelin’ Fever, even though we’re going nowhere!

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of the Week: External Combustion by Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs NEW!

Today we have the second full outing of music from Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, and some of it sounds very Pettyesque. And that is always a good thing from our perspective. It’s also to be expected since some of the songs were written while Campbell was lead guitarist and co-songwriter with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. That’s not to say that Campbell and his gang aren’t their own band. They surely are, but the influence is unmistakable.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We bring back our Travelin’ Fever EP today. It’s starting to warm up here and people are getting the travelin’ bug. Pretty soon, I’ll be bitching about the heat because here in New England, we go from 50 to 80, according to next weekend’s predictions. But I digress, today you’ll hear Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Travelin’ Wilburys, Asleep at The Wheel, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield and more!

Sunday is a day of rest and it’s Mother’s Day to boot. Allow me to say again, ad nauseum, that it’s a great day to tune us in. We’ve got Germany, the UK, France, Greece, Faroe Islands, Russian Federation, Chile, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Texas and California on already this morning. Tune us in.

We’re at Week’s End With Our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP and Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight, Friday, March 25, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We continue now with our celebration of Women’s History Month as we put Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight, but we kick it off early with our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP!

We start the day off with a visit to Laurel Canyon and some musical memories!

Here’s today’s line-up:

9:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

Laurel Canyon was a breeding ground for some of the biggest names in music for two generations. It started in the sixties with bands like The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, and The Mamas and The Papas, John Mayall, and spilled over into the seventies with Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Jackson Browne and many more. In addition to those artists, you’ll hear The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Manassas, Bonnie Raitt, John David Souther, Canned Heat, Harry Nilsson, Carole King, James Taylor and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Shawn Colvin

Shawn Colvin is one of those amazing singer-songwriters who has, somehow, flown under much of the radar out there for many years. She is best known for her 1998 Grammy Award-winning song, Sunny Came Home, but that’s not all she’s accomplished in her career. You can read more about Shawn Colvin right here. And best of all, if you don’t know much about her music, you can tune it in tonight and see for yourself.

Join your friends this morning. We’ve got listeners on from Chile, Greece, Italy, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Faroe Islands (they’re becoming regulars), Spain, Israel, Canada, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and France! We’re free. We accept no advertising, so there are no commercial interruptions, and we never ask you for personal information. What’s not to like?

We’re at Midweek With Our ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP and Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, Shawn Colvin, and Others Live at Red Rocks, Wednesday, March 16, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We are at midweek, and we’ve got some great music for you today starting with our ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP.

Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby and David Lindley will serenade you from the same stage a bit later!

Here’s today’s line-up:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready For The Country? Various Artists

Well, are you? Because we’ve got the masters of (real) country and country-rock right here for you. Definitely no bad pop bands with fiddles. Only the real thing. You’ll hear Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Pure Prairie League, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Asleep at The Wheel, Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Pure Prairie League, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt. Steve Earle & The Dukes, Mudcrutch, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Band, Bob Dylan, and more!

7:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, and David Lindley Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, September 12, 1999

This was one hell of a show. I did not attend the Red Rocks event, but I did see the tour when it passed through Massachusetts. It was an amazing event seeing all these great musicians and singers together on one stage with no egos in the way. Tune it in.

Here we are again, literally begging you to tune in. And we’re not doing it for the money because we don’t actually make any money on this little endeavor. It’s a labor of musical love that I share my personal music collection with all of you. Get it while it’s hot, free, and free of commercial interruption.

We Hit Our Midweek Stride With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Laura Nyro Live at The Fillmore, Wednesday, March 9, 2022

Good Morning, Travelers and Daydreamers. Today we’ve got our EP all about hitting the road, and we continue our celebration of the women of music with Laura Nyro.

Laura Nyro is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of her generation.

Here’s your midweek line-up:

10:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

When we were kids, my friends and I dreamed of buying a VW van and driving across country. We pretty much never made it out of the driveway, although we did drive to Nashville to visit the Grand Ole Opry. In this playlist you’ll hear Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, The Box Tops, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Canned Heat, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Eagles, Janis Joplin, Del Shannon, Guy Clark, Asleep at the Wheel, Jesse Winchester, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Led Zeppelin, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, Willie Nelson, the Marshall Tucker Band, Fats Domino and more!

7:00 p.m. Laura Nyro, Live at The Fillmore East, New York, NY, March 30, 1971

Sweet Blindness, Gonna’ Take a Miracle, Stoned Soul Picnic, Eli’s Coming…Laura Nyro wrote some brilliant songs that put others on the map. But there’s nothing quite like hearing her sing them herself. See for yourself tonight at 7:00 p.m.

We’re out there playing music for your listening pleasure 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. All totally free of charge, and we do not accept any advertising. We pay for this out of pocket as a labor of love. Tune us in. We’re not kidding here. No strings.

Today We Celebrate The Music of John Lennon, Hear a Live Acoustic Session Between Two Friends, and Listen to Our AOW on Thursday, December 9, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again inching toward the weekend. I don’t know how it is where you are, but here in Massachusetts we got our first dusting of snow last night. A taste of things to come.

We lost John Lennon 41 years ago yesterday. Today, we put him In the Spotlight.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

We lost John Lennon to an assassin 41 years ago yesterday. I remember it well; I was totally stunned. I was still in my twenties and I recall the horror I felt thinking “who the hell would want to kill John Lennon?” Today, we celebrate the music John Lennon left us as the heart and soul of The Beatles, as a solo artist, and with the various iterations of The Plastic Ono Band.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Smiley Smile by The Beach Boys

I know I say this every week, but we’re winding down on this particular AOW selection. Your last chance to hear it will be on Saturday. On Sunday, we’ve got a brand new album for you.

7:00 p.m. Jackson Browne & Warren Zevon, Live Acoustic Set at VPRO Studios, Holland, December 8, 1976

Here we simply have two old friends hanging out together and trading tunes at VPRO Studios in Holland. That they just happen to be a couple of the best singer-songwriters on the planet is a bonus.

We’re lively here this morning with listeners from Germany, the UK, France, Japan, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, Switzerland, the Faroe Islands, Russian Federation and points beyond. We’ve even got U.S. representation here this morning from Texas and Florida. Come on in. The music’s just waiting for you.
