Sunday Brings a Brand New Album of The Week, Our Original Sixties EP, and Plenty of Wide Open Stream, January 2, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got our Original Sixties EP to bring you through the afternoon and early evening, plus a brand new Album of The Week from Yusuf Islam, also known as the great Cat Stevens!

We bring you the music that inspired the station and the very first playlist we ever built!

Here’s Sunday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Teaser and the Firecat by Cat Stevens (also known as Yusuf Islam) NEW!

This is one of the Cat’s best albums and is undoubtedly one of my favorite albums of all time. I recently read a review of the album where the author stated that Cat Stevens was a “pop” artist at heart. It’s funny how music is in the ears of the beholder. I’ve always viewed Cat Stevens as a folk-rock musician. Labels do not matter, at the end of the day. It’s what you like. On a more somber note, I remember the dark days after the 9-11 attacks, and Cat Stevens being denied entry into the United States because he had converted to Islam. I have a difficult time imagining Cat Stevens as a terrorist. Seriously.

Today we bid a fond farewell to George Harrison’s twelfth and final album, an album that was brought to you lovingly by his son Dhani, and Jeff Lynne of ELO, and George’s bandmate in The Traveling Wilburys. Tomorrow, there will be a brand new selection when you roll out of bed.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Olde Renaissance Faire Grounds, Veneta, Oregon, August 27, 1972 NEW!

Another new live extravaganza from the consummate road warriors. I’m not sure how many people listen to the Dead’s studio stuff (I do), but I know far more people prefer them live. They are the world’s ultimate jam band for a reason. This performance is no exception.

Hey, it’s Saturday. Some of us are still in retail bondage, but many are not. What better time to make this your ‘go-to’ radio station? Etta James’ career began the year I was born, in 1954. Right up through 2012, her big, earthy voice has interpreted many genres, including R & B/soul, the blues, gospel, jazz, and rock n’ roll. She gained fame with several hits, including Tell Mama, At Last, and I’d Rather Go Blind. She won six Grammy awards, and 17 blues music awards, and she is a resident of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (1993), The Blues Hall of Fame (2001), and Grammy Hall of Fame (1999). There have been many players in the evolution of what has come to be known as country-rock. This 1969 release, the first from The Flying Burrito Brothers, continued the work of two of the most notable musicians in this process, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, both veterans of The Byrds (who were also players). These guys married country to other forms of popular music, like gospel, soul, and psychedelic rock, and it’s all on display here in this great new Album of The Week.

This one is due for an update soon, but it remains formidable as it is, as this first sixties EP focuses on early-to-mid music of the great generation. It’s a great day in The Mermaid Lounge because we bring you the music that inspired us to start this station to begin with. We focus on the 60’s and deliver a brand new Album of The Week as well.

The Sixties are back starting at 3:00 p.m. EST!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons NEW!

Gram Parsons never lived long enough to see just how influential he truly was. He died at the age of 26 from multiple drug use in a Joshua Tree, California, on this very day (September 19) in 1973. It’s only fitting we pay him tribute with our Album of The Week.

Parsons was a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist who played with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The International Submarine Band, and as a solo artist. He also collaborated with Emmylou Harris and, in spite of the rumors, they were not lovers. Their connection was music. She, of course, went on to become a country-rock legend.

Gram Parsons brought country to rock n’ roll and helped forge the country-rock genre in the same way that Bob Dylan brought folk to rock. He was that influential in a very short lifetime.

We’re back with the music that helped to bring us to live here in The Mermaid Lounge. This volume focuses more on the mid-to-late sixties. You will hear The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin (with and without her various bands), The Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, James Brown, The Box Tops, Vanilla Fudge, Sly & The Family Stone, The Doors, The Zombies, and many more. It’s over five hours of sixties music!
