11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit NEW!

Spirit was one of those bands that hung around in your head poking you with a stick until you realized just how good they were. I’m not much for reinventing the wheel just so I can say I wrote it, so I’m giving you a great description of the album from a great website called uDiscoverMusic:

Released in November 1970, this was the original psychedelic era’s final masterpiece. Lyrically, Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus wraps up everything that era was trying to say. Songs like “Nature’s Way” and “Nothing To Hide” thumb their noses at the straight world; “Love Has Found A Way” and “Life Has Just Begun” illustrate how much is possible if your mind is ready for it. Musically, it’s endlessly inventive, bringing the band’s jazz, pop and heavy rock factions onto the same astral plane. And though it crystallises a moment in time, it doesn’t sound the least bit dated.

We’ve got Neil Young and one of his most consistent back-up bands live for you at mid-afternoon. We haven’t aired this one for a while, so tune it in.

7:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix Live at The Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, CA, May 30, 1970 NEW!

Hendrix performed this one just a few months before his untimely death. It’s also brand new to the station; we’ve never heard it before ourselves.

Before, in between, and after we’ve got that great wide Open Stream, and a little later today, we’ll be adding music to that stream to make it even better. The Music Mermaid demands it. It’s Midweek Music Festival Time With Music From Woodstock and Monterey Pop on Wednesday, September 15, 2021

It’s hard to tell what inspires me to do what I do, but I can tell you that I’ve been listening to music since I was a little kid. Before the Beatles gave me my own music, I was listening to my sisters’ music — Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, and others. I remember watching my oldest sister dance on American Bandstand on our old black and white television. That was pretty cool back then.

On Monday, something prompted me to make this day music festival day in honor of Woodstock 1969 and its predecessor, The Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967. But there was another festival that nobody seems to have recorded or documented. It was held at Watkins Glen in New York in 1973 and featured three giants: The Band, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Grateful Dead. It was called The Summer Jam. In fact. the audience at Summer Jam was bigger than Woodstock, with 600,000 people in attendance. The closest we’ve come to finding a decent recording is a soundboard of The Grateful Dead’s performance, which we will feature on this coming Saturday night’s LIVE DEAD feature. At the end of the performance, both The Band and The Allman Brothers Band come up on stage with them.

Woodstock 1969 made music history, and the bands who played there are part of our station’s DNA.

Today we have four hours of music celebrating the legendary Woodstock festival. In spite of the fact that “Woodstock” has been recreated a few times, there was only one real Woodstock and it happened in 1969. You’ll hear Crosby, Stills & Nash (their first live performance ever), Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Canned Heat, Arlo Guthrie, The Band, Joan Baez, Tim Hardin, John Sebastian, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Country Joe & The Fish, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Who and more!

7:00 p.m. Music From The Monterey International Pop Festival, June 16-18, 1967

Truth be told, this is the festival that sparked it all and made Woodstock possible. Large, outdoor festivals had never happened before Monterey. What few people also realize is this is where a guy named Otis Redding was introduced to the music world. You’ll hear The Big O, along with The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Bob Dylan, Scott McKenzie, The Animals (who made a great song called Monterey about this event), Simon & Garfunkel, The Association, The Electric Flag, Booker T & The MGs, and more. Many of these performers would also be at Woodstock 1969.

As we always say, this is a great day to tune us in. But then again, every day is a great day to tune us in because we don’t play music like other radio stations. We are different not only in content, but also in style. See for yourselves.

Maria Muldaur is a folk and blues singer who began her career in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village as part of the folk music revival of the early sixties. She has continued to roll on singing not only folk and blues, but jazz, country, pop, and R & B. She’s also loaned her pipes to the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, and is one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Well, it’s another hot one outside today and that means we’re inside The Mermaid Lounge for the duration! There will be a different kind of ‘heat’ coming from this place.

11:00 a.m. Townes Van Zandt, Live at The Old Quarter Bar, Houston, Texas, July 1973

The actual date eludes us, but this was recorded in what can only be alled a small, intimate setting…just brick walls and a bar. It was recorded on a portable four track. You can hear Van Zandt shuffling between songs and some chatter from the attendees. This, however, is considered one of the most amazing recordings of Townes Van Zandt’s musical legacy. He is one of the finest singer-songwriters ever to grace the planet.

3:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix & Stephen Stills In Session, May 21, 1968

On May 21, 1968, Stephen Stills invited Jimi Hendrix to his basement for a jam session. This is the result of two masters joining forces to make music. Rumor has it that it was Stephen Stills who taught Hendrix how to play guitar. We’ll probably never know if that’s urban legend or actual fact.

7:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: For Foodies Only, Various Artists NEW!

I was probably hungry when I came up with this playlist, but here it is nevertheless. Songs with food (and drink) in either the title or the lyrics. Eat it up, people.
