Good morning, music lovers! It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and the living is easy with our brand new AOW from Jimmy Buffett (yes, this was on the list before his sad passing) and our ‘What’s In a Name’ multi-artist EP starting mid-afternoon.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes by Jimmy Buffett NEW!

Affectionately known as the Mayor of Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett passed away on September 1. There was a lot of mystery surrounding his health prior to this, but it is now known that he passed form Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer. Jimmy Buffett was a hell of a ride. If you’ve ever seen him ‘live’ you know his shows were a blast. He was a guy who took music seriously, but had a good time doing it and his ‘Parrotheads’ did as well.

I saw him at Fenway Park in Boston in the early 2000’s, the first time I’d ever seen a musical act at Fenway. It was unbelievable. I took a Buffett shamer with me to the show. Even he had a blast and confessed he went out and bought this very album after. This is as good an album as anyone has released. There isn’t a song we don’t like, and it was on our list from the beginning. I moved it up. Circumstances called for that.

We certainly have already featured Revolver here once at our early stages of life, but this version is the newly remixed version by Giles Martin, son of the man known as The Fifth Beatle, the late Sir George Martin. This is part of the new 5-CD set that we recently got our hands on, released yesterday. We will be featuring this music as part of our general rotation and we will be playing the rest of the material on it as programmed sessions throughout the next several weeks. The package takes you on a musical journey through the making of what is often considered The Beatles most significant album.

Often called the Grandfather of Reggae, Jimmy Cliff is a Reggae, Ska, and Rocksteady multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter who began his musical journey when he was still in primary school. He also starred in the movie The Harder They Come, which helped to propel Reggae to popularity around the world. He is the only living Reggae musician to receive the Order of Merit, the highest honor you can receive from the Jamaican government for achievement in the arts & sciences. He was inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. We kick off Reggae Week by putting him In the Spotlight.

8:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Forget About It by Alison Krauss NEW!

Released in 1999, this album by Alison Krauss is categorized as “country, bluegrass, and adult contemporary” (whatever that means). Critical commentary on this one is that in spite of the dobro and mandolin, Alison Krauss is a pop star at heart. Please. I never listen to critics. If I did, I wouldn’t have the album collection I do. Music is in the ear of the beholder. And life is too short to listen to shitty music. Regardless of what they call it, this is a great album.

10:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs UPDATED!

We started at 50 songs the first time we aired this; then moved up to 65. To hell with it, Petty’s up to 100 now and he deserves to be there. We’ve got Petty solo, as a Heartbreaker, with Mudcrutch, and as Charlie T. Wilbury Jnr. Most are original compositions. Some are covers. Some were only ever done as part of ‘live’ performances. No matter. The man is a musical godsend. I think we’re pretty measured on this station, and tend to underplay our house bands to remain in control. Today, we get to do the opposite.

We do not normally play an EP at 7:00 p.m. but that changes today. We take you into the evening hours with our ‘In Your Dreams’ multi-artist EP. We’re dusting this one off after a long winter’s nap. It’s time to break it out! Believe it or not, these guys met in elementary school in 1953 and began writing songs together. They are one of the best-selling groups of the 1960s, and songs like Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water reached number one on music charts worldwide. More than half a million people showed up in New York’s Central Park in 1981, which remains one of the most widely attended concerts in music history. What is not to love about these guys? They ‘ve made some of the best music on the planet, whether together or solo. But today, they are Simon & Garfunkel.

Gooooood Morning, Musicologists! Here we are at the beginning of the weekend, which is meaningless to we here in The Mermaid Lounge. Duty calls.

The Cavern Club opened its doors on this day in 1957. A band called The Beatles played there 292 times.

Here’s today’s not-too-taxing lesson:

January 16, 1957: The famed Cavern Club in Liverpool opened its doors on this day. It is where The Beatles launched their historic career. They played The Cavern Club a total of 292 times.

Also on this day, a man the Beatles considered an inspiration, Little Richard, recorded Lucille.

January 16, 1961: Shop Around by The Miracles (eventually Smokey Robinson & The Miracles) hit #1 on the R & B charts.

January 16, 1964: The Beatles played two shows at the Olympia Theatre, Paris, France, the first of an 18-night stint.

Also on this day, The Dave Clark Five hit #1 on the UK charts with Glad All Over. Mike Smith was their lead singer, one of the great rock n’ roll voices on the planet (John Lennon was another).

January 16, 1965: The Guess Who released their debut album, Shakin’ All Over.

On this day, The Supremes had their third consecutive #1 song with Come See About Me.

January 16, 1967: The Rolling Stones released their single, Ruby Tuesday.

January 16, 1992: Eric Clapton recorded his MTV Unplugged show, including the song Tears In Heaven and an acoustic version of Layla. It would win six Grammys, including Record of the Year.

January 16, 1988: George Harrison hits #1 with Got My Mind Set On You, his first #1 in 24 years.

January 16, 1996: Jamaican Police mistake Jimmy Buffett’s seaplane (The Hemisphere Dancer) as a drug-smuggler’s seaplane and begin firing on it when it lands in the water. U2’s Bono and his family are also on board. Nobody is injured, and the event inspires Buffett’s new song, Jamaica Mistaica. It was a close call for the Parrotheads of the world.

January 16, 2016: Bruce Springsteen kicks off The River Tour in Pittsburgh. His 1980 album, The River, is the centerpiece of the tour and is played from start to finish in many locations. The tour is the most successful of the year, grossing more than $268 million.
