11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Eldorado by Electric Light Orchestra NEW!

Eldorado, the fourth studio album by ELO, was also their very first complete ‘concept’ album, with the idea written by Jeff Lynne before he wrote any music. The influence of The Beatles is prevalent throughout the album and, of course, Jeff Lynne would go on to make music with various members of The Beatles during the 1980’s and 1990’s. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Planet Waves by Bob Dylan NEW!

Another album turning fifty years old. This album was released on January 17, 1974 and reunited Dylan with his longtime collaborators, The Band (one of the finest in music history). Dylan’s fourteenth release, with a successful tour and plenty of PR, went to number one on the Billboard charts, a first for him. Planet Waves is our album of the week.

3:00 p.m.  What’s In a Name: Various Artists

Janis Joplin sings about Bobby McGee, Linda Ronstadt sings about Justine, Steve Winwood sings about Valerie (about the late, great Valerie Carter), Bobbie Gentry sings the tale of Billie Joe McAllister who jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge, The Kinks tell the tale of Lola and Tony Joe White reveals all about Polk Salad Annie and her grandma. Other artists include The Beatles, Carly Simon, James Taylor, The Association, Joni Mitchell and more!

The very first Spotlight list we built was for this guy, a most underappreciated singer-songwriter; one of the best of his generation. He belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that honor seems to have eluded him, in spite of the fact that they’ve managed to induct The BeeGees, Funkadelic, AC/DC, The Clash, Aerosmith, Tupac, Jay-Z and the other “stars” of music. Fogelberg has been ‘eligible’ since 1998; it’s 2024, folks. Figure it the fuck out.

Sorry. Had to get that out. It pissed me off how long it took for them to induct Linda Ronstadt. They waited until she lost her magnificent voice. Give me a break. Anyway, I digress. We are here. It’s our third day of rain. Gloomy. But not here in The Lounge where The Music Mermaid resides. She’ll be in charge today as I work my last shift of the week.

They were pretty well respected in their time, but have somehow fallen through the cracks. But today, we put them In The Spotlight where they belong.

The amazing Delbert McClinton is an American blues rock-electric blues singer, songwriter, guitarist, harmonica player and pianist. He has been at his craft since 1957 and is still active, his most recent album released in 2022. He has won four Grammys, is in the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was honored by the historic Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas with the fifth star in their Walk of Fame. This evening he is most deservedly introduced as this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

Look, there simply isn’t a better way to begin another tedious work week than finding a way to tune us in. We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free. There is no commercial advertising ever.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Jesus Was A Capricorn by Kris Kristofferson NEW!

This was Kristofferson’s fourth studio album released in 1972. Every response to the album was mixed, but his out-of-character religious song Why Me became a number one hit. How the song came about is explained here. Nevertheless, I loved the album and, in spite of the fact that the title song was released then faded, I think it’s one of his best.

3:00 p.m.  Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

We’re back visiting the inhabitants of Laurel Canyon, the birthplace of country-rock, a fertile creative landscape for two generations of musicians (sixties, seventies). You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. The concert known as Amchitka is the benefit concert that launched Greenpeace. Joni Mitchell was the featured performer, although both James Taylor and Phil Ochs took part. It was held to raise money to fund Greenpeace’s protest of the 1971 nuclear weapons tests by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Amchitka, Alaska.

We’re back for our sixth year and we are on track for a great year here in The Mermaid Lounge! As always we are on 24/7 free of charge with no commercial advertising.

Tim Hardin’s heroin addiction kept him from superstar status, but his songs found their way into the hands of many musicians during the sixties and seventies. Sadly, Hardin died in 1980 of a heron overdose at the young age of 39. Tonight, we put Tim Hardin in the spotlight where he belongs.
