We go on the road with Emmylou Harris & Spyboy for the Wrecking Ball tour, what many consider Harris’ career-redefining album produced by Daniel Lanois. She took a minimalist approach with her band, bringing it back to basics. Spyboy consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums. As it turns out, Wrecking Ball is one of my all-time favorite Emmylou Harris albums.

This would have been earlier than Damn The Torpedoes, the album that put them on the map. That momentous event would not come for another year. This is vintage, early Heartbreakers, and I was there.

This great album was a collaborative effort between what many consider to be two unlikely vocalists in Alison Krauss (Union Station) and Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin). Produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, he hand-picked all the songs. Released in October 2007, Raising Sand won Album of The Year at the 2008 Americana Music Awards, and at the 2009 Grammy Awards. I have to tell you that I personally have a love-hate relationship with Led Zeppelin most of the time (I like some of their stuff; but not all) and have been ambivalent about Robert Plant overall. But this album? It’s a major winner.

It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our New AOW and The Women of Music Fully in Charge, December 19, 2021

Welcome to another Sunday in the Lounge. Today we have a vintage Album of The Week for you, and we have turned the musical reins over to the women of music. I don’t know a radio station that actually does any of that. We made a commitment to giving female artists a bigger voice. Take advantage of it.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This was the band’s debut album, released on August 23, 1967, with Janis Joplin as their main singer. It was recorded over a three-day stretch in December of 1966. After the band’s blowout success at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, Columbia Records took over their contract and re-released the album with two additional songs and with Janis Joplin’s name on the front cover. Album reviews are mixed on this one, and we really don’t pay much attention to that stuff anyway. Regardless of the status of the album, it was the birth of Janis Joplin’s all too short, but oh so sweet, career.

The ladies return to take you through the afternoon and evening, making it clear that they are not second class citizens on this station. Emmylou Harris’ career began back in 1969 and she is still on the move. During that time she has won 14 Grammy Awards, the Polar Music Prize (and many other awards too numerous to mention here), been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Harris is rightfully credited with making country more accessible to a wider audience, and today we put her In the Spotlight.

When I was young and dumb, I just assumed that these guys came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. In fact, what we have are four guys from Berkeley who sounded like they came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. They also just happened to make some of the greatest rock n’ roll on the planet. We love these guys here in The Lounge. Today we have the live from The Fillmore for your listening pleasure. Cook up some crawfish and shrimp and enjoy.

11:00 a.m. Our Thanksgiving Tradition: The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree by Arlo Guthrie

We’ve been playing this as our Thanksgiving tradition since we started back in 2017, and we continue on today with all 18 minutes and 34 seconds. The song, recorded in 1967, occupies one entire side of Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant album. As Guthrie himself explains it, the restaurant is not really called Alice’s Restaurant, even though the song is about Alice and the restaurant. That factoid is in keeping with the song’s continuing mystery. You can find the lyrics here should you want to sing along.

2:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

It’s rare that we choose a Greatest Hits album as our Album of The Week, but there are those moments in music when it must be done. For those who are only familiar with the current iteration of Fleetwood Mac, this is not how they began their career. During the sixties, when the band came to be, it was a British blues-rock band led by a great guitarist named Peter Green. His version of Fleetwood Mac remains our favorite here in the lounge.
