It’s The Ladies’ Day Out in The Mermaid Lounge Today, and the Foo Fighters Own Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 18, 2021

Happy Sunday, People! It’s a fine day here in The Mermaid Lounge as we close our broadcasting week in fine style. We feature the new Foo Fighters album early on, then turn it over to the ladies for the rest of the programming day!

Here’s the lay of the land:

12:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

This playlist was put together to show our commitment to the women of music, pioneers in their own right. It’s amazing to me how women continue to be put at the back of the bus in the rock n’roll music world. Carole King, a woman who has written many songs and made many people famous, and who has to her credit one of the biggest selling albums of all time in Tapestry, is just making the hall of fame this year. Linda Ronstadt, who has been singing since the sixties, and who was undeniably the Queen of Rock during the seventies, was not inducted until 2014. The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Shame is a fucking joke.

Here we are in 2021, and you’d be hard pressed to hear Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, or any other woman of their generation on any music station as part of a standard rotation. I call bullshit. Misogeny is alive and well in the music world, but not in The Mermaid Lounge.

9:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters NEW!

The band born from the demise of Nirvana gives us this week’s Album of the Week. Originally planned for 2020, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band’s tenth studio album represents a departure from their usual sound. Dave Grohl also has some interesting commentary on the goings on that occurred during the recording of the album, which you can read here.

We Launch Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ Playlist and ‘Let It Be Naked’ Is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, March 21, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today, we honor the women of popular music with our brand new Ladies Day Out playlist, giving you exactly 4 hours, 54 minutes, and 55 seconds of music from some of the most amazing female singers of our time.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles NEW!

To be sure, Phil Spector was a musical genius, having developed the ‘wall of sound’ used by so many performers. I like the wall of sound enough, but probably not as much as others, I have to confess. The Beatles were on the outs when they recorded Let It Be, and mostly they were not in the studio together during time. Phil Spector produced this album and, rumor has it, that John Lennon brought him the tapes when he was pissed off. The first release of this album was with the wall of souond. Along came Paul McCartney in 2004, convinced that the original release was not what was originally envisioned for the album. The result is this stripped down version, and I tend to concur with McCartney here.

Women’s music is nothing new to us, but we’ve never had a long-running women’s playlist until this day. Now, we do. Women continue to get the short end of the stick when it comes to rock music. Hell, that infamous pay-to-play radio conglomerate (whose name we shall not mention) offers quite a few individual stations dedicated to the men of rock, but not one single station dedicated to women. In fact, if you tune in any classic rock station, you almost never hear women played at all. But here, you do.

This playlist features many women. We have Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Cilla Black, Carla Thomas, Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Petula Clark, Nicolette Larson, Wendy Waldman, Phoebe Snow, Norah Jones, and many others. Check out the Playlist section of this blog for a complete set list. All you need to do is scroll to the bottom! It should be up on the blog by noon.

This would be an excellent day to tune us in unless, of course, you’re one of those guys who just can’t bear the thought of women in the musical spotlight for an extended period. This would not be your day.

We’re Launching “Ladies Day Out” This Coming Sunday, March 21, 2021

This coming Sunday, the ladies in our standard rotation get their due. Joining, The British Are Coming; The Sixties Rotation playlists; the Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues playlist will be our first all-female playlist called Ladies Day Out.

***Ladies Day Out kicks off on Sunday!***

The playlist is just about six hours long, and features all The Mermaid Lounge favorites, as well as some new additions to the rotation.

Women still get short shrift in the rock music world. It took Linda Ronstadt until 2014 to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; Carole King is just being inducted this year. We consider that a travesty of musical justice considering the fact that rappers are already being inducted (and we don’t believe they even belong in a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, frankly).

But here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio, we intend to elevate women to the level they’ve earned. Ladies Day Out is is another step in that process.
