One of the greatest bands of all time is live from Boston in this set, and I’m pleased to say that I was in attendance for this one. They’re a little bit swamp music, a little bit blues, a little bit country and a whole lot of rock n’ roll. They’re also a Mermaid Lounge favorite.

Before, in between, and after our programming we’re on wide Open Stream 24/7. We’ve got so much music you’ll be hard pressed to hear a repeat in a given day. We haven’t streamed this one in a while, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge consider Johnny Rivers an underrated musical entity. He was a hit machine during the sixties and seventies, and his live performances at the Whiskey are legendary. Today, we put him In the Spotlight where he belongs.

‘Twas the Day Before Christmas

It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our New AOW and The Women of Music Fully in Charge, December 19, 2021

Welcome to another Sunday in the Lounge. Today we have a vintage Album of The Week for you, and we have turned the musical reins over to the women of music. I don’t know a radio station that actually does any of that. We made a commitment to giving female artists a bigger voice. Take advantage of it.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This was the band’s debut album, released on August 23, 1967, with Janis Joplin as their main singer. It was recorded over a three-day stretch in December of 1966. After the band’s blowout success at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, Columbia Records took over their contract and re-released the album with two additional songs and with Janis Joplin’s name on the front cover. Album reviews are mixed on this one, and we really don’t pay much attention to that stuff anyway. Regardless of the status of the album, it was the birth of Janis Joplin’s all too short, but oh so sweet, career.

The ladies return to take you through the afternoon and evening, making it clear that they are not second class citizens on this station. Born from the ashes of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen (guitar/vocals) and Jack Cassady (bassist) created this great blues rock band. While other members have come and gone over the years, the stalwarts have always been these guys. In fact, they’ll be celebrating Jorma’s 80th birthday in with a live performance at Carnegie Hall on April 22, 2022. There’s something to be said for the longevity of this generation of musicians for sure. That’s why we’re here.

Emmylou Harris’ career began back in 1969 and she is still on the move. Harris is rightfully credited with making country more accessible to a wider audience, and today we put her In the Spotlight.

When I was young and dumb, I just assumed that these guys came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. In fact, what we have are four guys from Berkeley who sounded like they came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. They also just happened to make some of the greatest rock n’ roll on the planet. It’s a testament to their longevity, but I will say it again: Any band without Jerry Garcia is not The Grateful Dead. Period. Without the rest of the band, they’re really not The Grateful Dead. That still stands.
