Big Things Come In Groups of Threes Today From The Mermaid Lounge, Friday, September 18, 2020

It’s finally Friday. Of course, for those of us working retail, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the week. But no matter. Today in The Mermaid Lounge, great things come in groups of three. You’ll see what I mean.

Linda. Emmylou. Dolly. A supergroup no matter what they tell you.

Here’s Friday’s planned programming:

12:00 p.m. The Complete Trio Collection: Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton

I always lead off with Linda Ronstadt when I’m talking about a group of women singers. That is totally my bias, but it is without shame. No matter how you cut it, women get the short end of the straw in music. If they were guys, the word ‘supergroup’ would be flowing off everyone’s tongue. Linda, Emmylou and Dolly were a supergroup. The Complete Trio Collection proves it.

The complete collection gives you just that along with alternative versions of some of the songs and previously-unreleased material.

7:00 p.m. Steve Earle, Townes VanZandt, and Guy Clark: Together at The Bluebird Cafe, Nashville, September 3, 1995

It was Emmylou Harris who led me to Guy Clark originally. But one winter night in Harvard Square, three friends were outside in the snow freezing and decided to go into Passim’s Coffee Shop to get out of the elements for a while. Somebody was playing that night, but when I walked in and saw it was none other than Guy Clark, I was excited. The three of us were literally blown off our fucking stools. He has been a favorite ever since. A friend of Emmylou.

Now we add Steve Earle and songwriter in the extreme Townes VanZandt to the mix and what we have here is an amazing evening at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. This event took place just fifteen months before VanZand’s death.

Yeah. It’s all-country programming today. What about it? This is one of the things that makes us different than all the rest. This will be about 6 or 7 hours of actual programming. The rest of the 24-hour cycle? All open stream with no commercials. No cost. No obligation. No credit card or personal data required. Radio like it used to be.

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Lost Tapes of Valerie Carter NEW!

Known primarily as a “session singer” and background vocalist to most (not all), Valerie Carter was so much more than that. Her debut album, Just a Stone’s Throw, was produced by Little Feat’s Lowell George in 1977. She went on to release several more widely acclaimed albums. She was not only a singer, but a songwriter. She wrote Cook With Honey, which was a hit for someone named Judy Collins.

Back in 1995, I saw Linda Ronstadt in concert at Boston’s Orpheum Theater. Valerie Carter was the opening act, and she was a perfect fit. Ronstadt was dead on that night as well. But the best part of the night was when they were on the stage together.

A recent discovery of recordings that were never released has been transformed into this week’s Album of The Week, The Lost Tapes. Musicians and vocalists like Lowell George, Fred Tackett, Bill Payne, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson appear in testament to her immense talent. Valerie Carter: The little girl with the big voice.

The playlist that began our monthly focus on The Sixties. We now have two such playlists and are working on a third. Starts at 3:00 p.m. today and runs for a little over five hours. No advertising. No interruptions except for a couple of station I.D.s. No shit.

Get it together, people. You can either settle for “free” radio which is nothing more than an advertising venue and a lot of boring DJ chatter, pay for access to keep these slugs off. Or get it all for free like it used to be. Your choice.

Like so many other small venues of its time, My Father’s Place was the incubator for future stars. In Boston (actually, Cambridge), we had Jonathan Swift’s, Jack’s, The Inn Square Men’s Bar, and Passim’s Coffee House. 

Linda Ronstadt was one of those future stars who passed through My Father’s Place on her way to the top. We have her July 21 ,1974 performance today. That was also her Heart Like A Wheel breakout year.

3:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Heaven Is In Your Mind by Traffic   NEW!

Here’s the thing about British bands and America. The releases are always different between Europe and the U.S., and I’m always so annoyed by that. Why? Because the European ones are always so much stronger. But never mind that shit. Traffic was an excellent band, although a bit psychotic about how to handle Dave Mason. It was some kind of love-hate relationship. Still, he and the magnificent Steve Winwood played their styles off each other very well, and Jim Capaldi? Well, Traffic would never have been Traffic without him. This is a great album, no matter where the  hell it came from.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Pink Floyd   NEW!

Today is Roger Waters’ 77th birthday, and it’s time for Pink Floyd to step into The Spotlight here in The Mermaid Lounge, where music nirvana is made daily. 

Look, people, again I say Europe and Asia is all over this station. I have no idea what the problem here is in America. Perhaps you prefer to pay for your music. I can’t explain the lethargy. Whatever. Whenever you wake the fuck up, we’ll be here.

The started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band, and the rest is history. The Band left us an amazing volume of just plain great fucking music, from their hits to their deep cuts. That’s why we love them here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Revolver by The Beatles

No matter who you talk to about Beatle albums, the consensus is that this was a vast turning point for the band from all perspectives.

The Doors had two releases in 1967. This was their debut album, recorded in 1966 and released in January of 1967. It is considered a seminal event in the development of psychedelic and acid rock. An amazing album.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday by The Byrds  FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this week’s Album of the Week. Tomorrow, there’ll be a new one in its place!

7:00 p.m.     Linda Ronstadt Live at The Capitol Theater, Passaic, New Jersey, December 6, 1975

Heart Like a Wheel was released in 1974, and Prisoner in Disguise in 1975. It was lift-off time on the launch pad of Linda Ronstadt’s career.

10:00 p.m.   Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Matrix Club, San Francisco, December 4, 1966   NEW!

Tonight we take it back to 1966 and the infamous Matrix Club on Fillmore Street, San Francisco, a key location to what is called ‘the San Francisco sound.’ Enjoy.

The Summer of Love is in Charge Today With The Doors, John Mayall, and a Great Little Album That Goes Unnoticed, Thursday, August 20, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Somehow, this 1967 programming just kind of fell in my lap very late last night. Sometimes, without trying, things just kind of fall together!

11:00 a.m.   John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live in 1967

If you follow this station and read this blog (something you should all be doing, by the way), you know we’re into music in all forms. Some of the stuff is fan recorded, and that’s just fine with us. This particular entry is short on quality, but big on blues history. After Clapton left the band, the void was filled by Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. They would go on to form Fleetwood Mac which, by the way, started with Peter Green on vocals and was an actual blues band. Get past the fan-recorded aspect of this and enjoy. By the way, if you listen to Ye, this is probably not your venue.

3:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Strange Days by The Doors

The second Doors release of the Summer of Love. As I have said previously, it did not disappoint after their fantastic debut, The Doors.

7:00 p.m.    The Best of The Summer of Love! Evergreen, Volume 2 by The Stone Poneys   NEW!

Speaking of two releases in one year, The Stone Poneys also accomplished that feat in 1967, with this release coming just five months after their debut. Nobody talks about this in ‘Summer of Love’ terms, but this was released right in the heart of it, June 1967. Unlike their debut album, Linda Ronstadt was prominently featured on vocals. Not surprisingly, it would be the most successful of their three releases before she exploded onto the music scene.

Linda Ronstadt left Tucson for L.A. with Bobby Kimmel (guitarist) to make music. They hooked up with a guy named Kenny Edwards, who would later be a very important cog in her back-up band. This is a portrait of Linda Ronstadt before we knew her, in a more trippy vein. Great stuff.

Women’s Week Brings Us Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur on Thursday, July 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! The next few days here are big days for the ladies of rock n’ roll as we move toward the end of Women’s Week. Today’s programming is only seven hours worth, but it’s packed with great stuff.

11:00 a.m.   Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore

Lucinda Williams hails from Louisiana and somehow you can just feel that coming through in her gritty music. Among her peers, she’s one of the most respected and influential singer-songwriters in the business. You’d never know it because — no matter how you look at it — women are still considered second-class citizens in the rock world. At least these women are. The little blonde sound-alike waifs they prop up on stage these days are no match.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Western Wall: The Tuscon Sessions by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris

This is one of those albums that musicians feel in their soul. It may not be a platinum seller, but that’s not why it’s being done. It’s one of the things you have the opportunity to make after you’ve paid your dues in the business. And both Ronstadt and Harris have done just that.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur   NEW!

Friend of Linda, Bonnie, Kate & Anna McGarrigle and many others. Maria Muldaur has been out there since the great folk revival of the sixties. She has been gracing us with her own solo work and also singing background and harmonies with just about everyone else, including Linda Ronstadt, the Jerry Garcia Band, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, and Paul Butterfield. Today she gets The Spotlight, and deservedly so.

Big Mama was the real deal. She sang Lieber & Stoller’s Hound Dog back in 1953, three years before Elvis hit the airwaves with the song, and made rock n’ roll history. Not only did she sing, but she played the drums and the harmonica. The pioneers of rock & roll? They know it all started with the blues and gospel. In case you haven’t figured it out, Black Music Matters.

We Open Women’s Week With Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and The Queens of Soul, Sunday, July 19, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re kicking off Women’s Week with a final Ronstadt Birthday Bash concert and a set from the Queens of Soul. Western Wall: The Tucson Sessiions debuts as our Album of the Week.

Two friends got together to sing, and the result was this most amazing album. It was the only tour I missed due to  my partner’s illness at the time. It was hard for me to part with those tickets. On the bright side, I gave them to Ronstadt fans…my sister and her husband.

3:00 p.m.     Linda Ronstadt Live at The Orpheum Theater in Boston, May 14, 1995   NEW!

I did not miss this one though, and it was one of the most amazing performances Linda Ronstadt ever delivered. The Orpheum may be old, but it’s a great sounding venue. Valerie Carter opened this show and then joined Ronstadt on stage during her show. This incredible set list is up under the Playlist tab. Just scroll to the bottom.
