Little Feat Live in Boston, Volume One of Our Summer of Love Playlist, and a Lot of Open Stream, Friday, March 26, 2021

Good Morning, Folks! It’s Friday in The Mermaid Lounge and we’re light on programming and big on Open Stream today. But the programming we have is outstanding, and that’s a good thing.

Today we have Little Feat live at The Orpheum Theatre.

Little Feat’s career spanned five decades, all good. But the best years were with Lowell George, at least in the minds of those here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we have them in Boston’s Orpheum Theatre, another show I was fortunate enough to see.

We have three volumes of these great tunes, and we’ll be hearing all of them over the next several days. But today we start with volume one featuring Petula Clark, Donovan, Marvin Gaye, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Yardbirds, The Electric Prunes, The Box Tops, The Strawberry Alarm Clock, and some guys named The Beatles…and more!

In spite of what the assclown named Yeezy says about guitars being insignificant to music (that’s because he has no fucking talent whatsoever), we’ve got a line-up of guitartists that prove him wrong today, including Bonnie Raitt, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Andrew Gold, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Garcia, Mike Campbell, Brian May, and many more.

This is volume two of our playlist fixated on the color blue. Can’t help it. It’s my favorite color. 11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Take The Highway Live!

If you had the opportunity to see The Heartbreakers live, then you know how good they actually were. Their chemistry as a band was off the fucking charts. This live interlude was recorded live over two shows: November 23, 1991 at the Lawlor Events Center and the University of Nevada, and November 24 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat

Time is running down on our Album of the Week. We have one more airing after today before a new album is chosen. So, be sure to tune this in. It’s one of the finest performances by any band at any time in music history.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Temptations NEW!

We’re building new playlists here all the time. This is one of them. Today we give The Temptations, a classic Motown band, their due here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We’re here 24/7, and we don’t know what it takes to get the people from the U.S. to join in, just like the rest of the revolution going on in the world. Everywhere except here. Perhaps you need to wake up on several levels.

The Heartbreakers on a leg of their High Grass Dogs Tour.I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The chemistry of this band is beyond amazing. They have it firing on all eight cylinders each and every outing. It’s Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. There’s more where this came from.

5:00 p.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York, April 30, 1976

The Legend and his bandmates, The Wailers, on their Rastaman Vibration Tour live from The Beacon.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat NEW!

Again, the most underrated band in rock music because they defy definition. Little Feat is an eclectic combination of rock and roll, blues, boogie, country, folk, soul, New Orleans R&B, and swamp music. Waiting for Columbus was recorded over seven live performances during 1977. The venues were The Rainbow Theatre in London, and George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

Although I generally don’t give a shit what critics think, it should be duly noted that critics widely believe this is one of the finest live albums in music history. And for once, I agree with their position.

Let’s get with the program, America. Everyone else has. Tune us in. This is a great day to start.

It’s Alive All Day Long: Bob Dylan’s Rare Performances, Little Feat Live in London, and The Rolling Stones Live in San Jose, Monday, September 28, 2020

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan: Rare Performances From The Copyright Collection, 1962-1966

We haven’t had any live Dylan here for a while, and we must remedy that situation. This is one of the best that we’ve been able to dig up from the vault. It’s a good one.

3:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theatre, London, August 2, 1977

Perhaps the most underrated band in rock music history. Little Feat was impossible to pidgeonhole, a brilliant combination of the blues, country, rhythm & blues, and good old fashioned rock n’roll. I saw them a few times before Lowell George’s untimely death, and they never, ever disappointed.

7:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones From The Vault, Live at San Jose Arena, April 19-20, 1999

Mick and the boys tear it up in San Jose. Another band that has stood the test of time, and is still tearing it up on stage, people.

Little Feat “Live” in London, Tom Rush Takes His Turn in The Spotlight, and MOJO is our Album of The Week, Sunday, June 21, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Welcome to Sunday Funday, and it’s a good one today. We have Mr. Petty and his band, Little Feat, and Tom Rush on the schedule.

Here’s today’s Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers   NEW!

The Heartbreakers’ blues album is on tap this week. We chose this because Mojo was released ten years ago on June 15. The album was their 12th studio album, it was Petty’s first in eight years with the band, and the first with Ron Blair back full-time as bassist after the death of the beloved Howie Epstein. (Blair was one of the original founding members of the Heartbreakers; Howie Epstein took over when Blair left.) The album was recorded in Tom Petty’s studio, The Clubhouse and was largely recorded live in the studio without overdubs. This album offers 15 really great songs by a really great band.

2:00 p.m.    Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theater, London, August 2, 1977   NEW!

Little Feat is like Jello. There’s always room for Little Feat, one of the most amazing, fun, and enjoyable bands on the planet. I’m talking here about the original Little Feat with Lowell George mostly, although the post-George bands were respectable. I saw these guys a few times in my life, but the best show I ever saw was at the Harvard Square Theater, yet another lost venue, with Jerry Jeff Walker opening.

7:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

Tom Rush’s contribution to music cannot be overstated and sometimes people forget him. His recording of Joni Mitchell’s music helped to briing her to the forefront. He was just not interested in star power. I saw this guy on February 8 of this year and he was amazing. He’s 79 years young and still on the road. A real troubadour.

This was Dan Fogelberg’s second studio album, released in October 1974, and it’s one of my favorites. I’m not one to listen to music critics, and albums like this make me happy that I don’t. He has a lot of really legit help here: Don Henley, Russ Kunkel, Al Perkins, Graham Nash, and Glenn Frey. Produced by Joe Walsh. Give it a listen.

3:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Laura Nyro

Laura’s compositions have resulted in hits for many, like The Fifth Dimension, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Three Dog Night, and Peter, Paul & Mary. Now, it’s her turn in the spotlight.

6:00 p.m.     Little Feat, Live at the Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA  NEW!

What can you say about Little Feat? I’ve seen these guys — in their Lowell George iteration — several times. They are untouchable. We’re working on some new live stuff beyond this as well for down the road a piece.

Don’t know what it’s doing there, but as long as you have a computer tab or a phone, there’s always time for music.
