Today We’ve Got Joni Mitchell In the Spotlight, The Heartbreakers Live in Minneapolis, and Our Album of The Week, Thursday, July 22, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a brand new Spotlight feature today with Joni Mitchell. We’ve played her live concerts in the past, but she’s long overdue for a Spotlight position. Today she gets her due.

The Canadian singer-songwriter has fused together elements of rock, jazz, folk, classical, and pop to develop her own style and has toured and recorded with artists like Tom Scott & The L.A. Express and Charles Mingus. Today she gets her turn In the Spotlight.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: CHOBA B CCCP by Paul McCartney

We’re winding down with this great in-studio live album of old rock n’ roll hits. Saturday will be the final airing. On Sunday we’ll have a brand new album for you.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live From The Target Center, Minneapolis, August 3, 1999

Yesterday was Howie Epstein’s birthday, so there’s no better way to pay him tribute than playing a Heartbreakers’ concert. While Ron Blair (pictured above) was the original bassist and a founding member of The Heartbreakers’, Howie Epstein played bass and mandolin for the band from 1982 through 2003. He was also a great complementary vocalist to Tom Petty, singing much of the back-up on stage and in the studio.

We Celebrate Linda Ronstadt’s Birthday With All Linda Programming, Save for Our Album of The Week, Thursday, July 15, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s Thursday and it’s also Linda Ronstadt’s 75th birthday. We have people who are our “house” favorites. Linda is one of them. We plan on featuring these artists on our five-year anniversary, so stay tuned. But today and tomorrow? These are Linda days.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Linda Ronstadt

We cover Linda’s career from her very early days with The Stone Poneys up until her very last album. That’s a fifty-year career span. Ronstadt always says that she doesn’t identify herself as a rock n’ roll singer, but during the 70s, she was the number one female rock singer on the planet, selling out arenas across the country and playing a 20-night stand at The Universal Amphitheatre. I know. I went to forty of those concerts across the country.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Exit Wounds by The Wallflowers

Our second to last airing of this beauty, another great effort by Jakob Dylan and his mates. Our final airing will be on Saturday, so don’t miss this one.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA, May 14, 1995

This was one of the concerts I attended in a great old hall with excellent sound. Adding to the musical magic of the night was Valerie Carter as the opening act, and who joined Linda on stage for a few songs as well. Linda Ronstadt always said she would rather have been part of an all-girl band. We’ll get to that stuff tomorrow.

We will take two days to celebrate Ronstadt because there is that much material to cover, and because we remain committed to more open stream than programming. So, tune us in and help us celebrate Linda’s 75th year. Although she can no longer sing, she has left a great musical legacy behind.

Fillmore Forward With The Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and LIVE DEAD Later, Saturday, July 3, 2021

Onward Fillmorians! We move forward with three great bands today from both Fillmore venues. Our only exception to the Fillmore rule will be the final airing of Kate Taylor’s Album of The Week.

It was tough accessing some of the actual posters for these dates, but we did our best to choose alternatives wisely!

We have all of these legendary recordings in our vast collection. These are the best culled over the 1971 Allman Brothers appearances.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sister Kate by Kate Taylor FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of Kate Taylor’s great album from 1971. We eagerly await her brand new August 2021 release. Tomorrow, however, when you roll out of bed we have a masterful selection for you.

6:00 p.m. Creedence Clearwater Revival Live at The Fillmore West, July 4 1971

CCR delivers their special brand of swamp music in what is the final day of The Fillmore West’s existence under Bill Graham. It’s hard to believe these guys were born and raised in Berkeley, California. Their ‘born on the bayou’ sound was truly amazing. One of the best bands to ever exist.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore West, July 2, 1971

We resurrect this great show for our Fillmore extravaganza. What would this celebration be without the ultimate jam band’s inclusion?

This is a great warm-up for tomorrow’s grand finale! We hope you’ll tune our special July 4 celebration. Forget all the flag-waving and fireworks bullshit. This is where the party’s at.

It’s a (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday Except for Some “Live” Stones and Simon & Garfunkel In the Spotlight, June 30, 2021

Yes, it’s the final day of June as we continue to melt here in the northeast. Hopefully, the end of the month will bring an end to this misery. It’s a (mostly) open stream day as we prepare for some fun on Thursday and Friday. You’ll just have to tune in to find out what it is. We’re not tipping our hat.

Today we’ve got some live Stones for you. I’ve only seen them a couple of times in my lifetime, both times during the seventies. They were great on stage, and Mick Jagger did not disappoint. During her heyday, Linda Ronstadt proclaimed the Stones her favorite rock n’ roll band. That has a certain symmetry to it if you’ve heard her live performance of Tumblin’ Dice.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Simon & Garfunkel

We haven’t aired this one for a while, and these guys certainly are due some time in the spotlight. They made their debut back when they were sixteen years old, singing Hey Little Schoolgirl. That was back in the fifties. Since then, they’ve sold upwards of 105 million records.

All around this light programming, we have a (mostly) Open Stream Wednesday, circulating our 27,000-song standard rotation. Definitely a good day to find out what we’re all about. Best of all: We’re totally free 24/7, uninterrupted by advertisers or chatty DJ’s who don’t know when to shut the fuck up.

From the second leg of the infamous True Confessions tour. We’ve aired other shows from this tour in the past, but never this venue. According to Mike Campbell, it was playing with Bob Dylan that taught the band how to be spontaneous on stage and respond to what the audience wanted. If that’s the case, they learned their lesson well.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blues From Laurel Canyon by John Mayall FINAL AIRING!

The final airing of Blues From Laurel Canyon is today, so make sure you’re on your tab at 3:00 p.m. When you wake up Sunday, there will be a brand new Album of The Week.

One of the finest bands ever to enter a recording studio right here. A Mermaid Lounge favorite for sure, and they are taking their place in the spotlight today.

Another new show from the world’s premier jam band. This one comes from the Academy of Music in New York. Eventually we’ll have to start repeating shows, but not yet. There are still plenty to go, and every show is different…even on the same tour.

This was the eleventh consecutive night for Ronstadt’s Simple Dreams tour back in ’77, added due to continued ticket demand. She was riding high in those day. I saw the tour in Boston and upstate New York, only two of the forty I would see her perform during her career.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Exodus by Bob Marley & The Wailers

This will be the final airing of Exodus as our Album of The Week. When you roll your butt out of bed tomorrow morning, we’ll have a brand new album in focus.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Marvin Gaye

Despite his many personal problems, Marvin Gaye was a musical marvel who was instrumental in shaping the Motown sound, first as a studio musician, then as a major artist with a string of hits. Because of this, he was often called The Prince of Motown. We put him In the Spotlight today.

Jesse Winchester remains one of the most underrated singer-songwriters of his generation, and today we have the final airing of his album, Nothing But A Breeze. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a new Album of The Week.

6:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Laura Nyro

Laura Nyro is another of those singer-songwriters who sometimes flies under the radar. She has written songs that have put many people on the charts. But there’s nothing like hearing Laura Nyro sing her own compositions. You can do that here today.

I saw Joni Mitchell live on her Court & Spark tour with Tom Scott & The LA Express. She was brilliant, and she was often not a pleasant soul on stage. Be careful not to clap at the wrong time. One of the most revered singer-songwriters of all time, and rightfully so.
