Good morning, music lovers. It’s a day to appreciate our Open Stream as we are going to leave it at that all day and night, right up until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow! Enjoy!
Remember, there’s never any advertising. We’re completely free. And there are no DJ’s to talk through your songs. The button is below.
Good morning, Petty lovers! Today we close out Tom Petty Weekend with all Fillmore ’97 programming and plenty of big, wide Open Stream! We keep it simple today.
Your musical lineup is simple:
10:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, Volume 1, January 31-February 7, 1997
3:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, Volume 2, January 31-February 7, 1997
8:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, Volume 3, January 31-February 7, 1997
We have two concerts from the famed 1997 Fillmore concerts, which every member of The Heartbreakers considers the best of times on stage.Today’s collection is the one from the boxed set released a couple of years ago. Tom himself felt the band was at its most creative, and it is apparent as this collection covers 20 magnificent nights of shows where the playlist changed every single time out. That is unheard of. Of particular note are the number of “covers” from their rock and roll heroes that the band performs. We here in The Mermaid Lounge not only reveres The Heartbreakers as the best rock n’ roll band on the planet, but also the best cover band.
Enjoy the trip. The Music Mermaid will be here manning the controls all day and, as usual, at no cost and with absolutely no commercial interruption. The big ass button is below.
Good morning, freedom lovers! Should we truly be celebrating? Maybe not at this time, but we all know what we have to do and that’s all I’ll say in this venue. But every day is a good music day here in The Mermaid Lounge!
Here’s your Fourth of July musical lineup:
10:00 a.m. Free As A Bird: Various Artists
We start out the day with songs about being free, both politically and otherwise, with the Edgar Winter Group, Cream, Steve Winwood, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jesse Winchester, The Byrds, Dusty Springfield, Bob Dylan, Delaney & Bonnie, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Allen Toussaint, Chicago and more!
3:00 p.m. The Summer of Love Countdown: Various Artists NEW!
Before we begin, let’s dispel some musical misinformation. I often see the Summer of Love used in conjunction with 1969. That is incorrect. I think people make that association because of Woodstock. But the Summer of Love was actually in 1967. This is not a difference of opinion. This is a matter of historical fact. Full stop. Done. Now, we do have Summer of Love playlists already, but those are a bit different. This is a playlist of the biggest songs on the radio during the summer and into fall of 1967. The actual real Summer of Love. We’ll be focusing on the songs and artists from that musical time period over the next week or two.
After all this great stuff, we’ll be on our big, wide Open Stream of more than 27,000 songs. And who knows what The Music Mermaid will do while I’m out there enjoying my family today. It’s all in her hands after this. And remember, we’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free.
Good morning, music lovers! We begin the fall with a day of Open Stream with Trifectas. That means we start each hour with three-in-a-row from a chosen artist. No hints.
Here’s your musical lineup:
9:00 a.m. Open Stream with Trifectas: Various Artists
Today from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. we’ll be on Open Stream and starting each hour with three-in-a-row from The Beatles, Emmylou Harris, Marcia Ball, Jeff Lynne, Little Feat, Marvin Gaye, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and more!
8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Brian Wilson FINAL AIRING!
Tonight Brian Wilson takes his final spin as our featured singer-songwriter for this week. Tomorrow, we’ll introduce a brand new artist in this slot.
We’re here 24/7 at no charge and with no commercial interruption. Get on board! You won’t regret it!
Good morning to all as we start another work week. We’ve got a Mudcrutch Monday here later, but we start things off with Janis today.
Here’s your Monday musical landscape:
11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Janis Joplin
We start the day off with Janis Joplin’s Spotlight feature. We haven’t heard this for a long time and this seems like the perfect day to dust it off and play it.
7:00 p.m. The Best of Mudcrutch Live: The 2016 Tour
You all know by now that one of my biggest musical regrets is not seeing Mudcrutch at The House of Blues here in Boston. This playlist seals it for me: I was dumb as a bucket of rocks to miss this concert.
We’ve got a lot of wide Open Stream today, and that’s always a good thing because you never know what The Music Mermaid is going to pull out of her top hat. As you well know, she has exceptional taste in music.
Good morning, reggaeologists! As you know, we keep it simple on Sundays here with our new Album of The Week as the anchor. We also have some great reggae, rocksteady and ska, before turning it over to The Music Mermaid for our big, wide Open Stream.
Here is your simple Sunday lineup:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Car Wheels On A Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams NEW!
Lucinda is definitely a Lounge favorite, and this is one of our favorite albums as well. Tom Petty recognized her greatness long ago. She was opening for one of his early tours and he went out onto the stage and told the crowd that they must pay attention to her. He recognized her songwriting and storytelling greatness. She became a fixture on his tours right up until the end. Give a listen.
3:00 p.m. The Best of Reggae and Ska: Various Artists
We haven’t heard this one for a while and this seemed like a great day to hear Prince Buster, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Judy Mowatt, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, Basil Gabbidon, Peter Tosh, The Rhythm Aces, Derrick Morgan, Laurel Aitken, Count Lasher, the Jiving Juniors, Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley, Desmond Dekker, The I-Threes and more!
From just after 5:00 p.m. EST and on through the night it’s our big, wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in full control. As you know, she has impeccable taste in music. Who knows what’s in store!
Good morning, music lovers! We are over the midweek hump and heading for nirvana as we give you plenty of wide Open Stream sandwiched between some excellent programming.
Here’s your musical lineup:
9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Hot Chili Mama by BeauSoleil
We’re on the downslide with this great Cajun and Zydeco album by BeauSoleil, often called the greatest Cajun band in the world. Our final airing will be sometime on Saturday, so don’t miss your opportunity!
10:00 a.m. Open Stream with The Music Mermaid
Right after the airing of our AOW, we begin several hours of wide Open Stream courtesy of our Music Mermaid. Who knows what she’ll get you into, but she’s got 30,000 music files to choose from, so there will be no repeats.
7:00 p.m. Summer of Love, Volume Three: Various Artists
Tonight we give you the final installment of our Summer of Love Series. For the record, the SOL was not 1969. I believe that myth exists because of Woodstock. The actual Summer of Love was in 1967, but no matter because you will hear The Mamas & The Papas, The Rascals, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Jackie Wilson, Donovan, The Turtles, Vanilla Fudge, The Association, The Doors, The Youngbloods, Lulu, Buffalo Springfield and more!
Speaking of love. What’s not to love here? We are on 24/7 and we’re totally free. We’re also free of commercial advertising. Get on board.
We’re back into the real world of work today, but we’ve got you covered with some great tunes all day long. If you’re still reveling in the season, hell, that’s even better!
Here’s your Monday lineup:
11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan: The Love Songs
Hey, Mr. Dylan wasn’t just about protesting and social justice. He has written a fair amount of pretty amazing love songs. In fact, Maria Muldaur recorded an entire album of Dylan’s love songs back in the seventies, and George Harrison has had a few hits recording Dylan’s love songs. Today, we’ll be airing them for you as sung by the composer.
1:00 p.m. Open Stream Afternoon with Trifectas
We’re giving The Music Mermaid free reign this afternoon with Trifectas through the six o’clock hour. Who knows what she’s going to choose? Dunno. I guess you’ll just have to listen to find out.
7:00 p.m. Creedence Clearwater Revival Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, July 4, 1971
We close out Monday’s programming with a great live performance from one of the best rock n’ roll bands in music history.
Well, musicologists, we’re on the downslide to a new year. Starting about midweek, we’re taking you on a nostalgic trip to some of the most famous (and infamous) music festivals and multi-artist music shows with a cause in mind as we head toward January 2023. We have lots in store for the brand new year, so stick around.
Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got our very first wide Open Stream day in a long time today! The Music Mermaid is in charge with nothing on her slate. Who know what she’ll pick up.
We also give you Trifectas (three-in-a-row from a single artist) at the top of every hour from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.!
We’re on 24/7 and today we are free of programming as well as free of charge! Tune us in!
Good Morning, Musicologists! Monday has reared its head here in The Mermaid Lounge and I’ve got a morning mission of mercy on tap. The Music Mermaid, however, is here to take care of our musical musings for the day.
Here’s your musical landscape today:
12:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at Sweetwater, Mill Valley, CA, January 27-28, 1992
It’s been a minute since we’ve heard this one, so step right up and get yourself some live acoustic blues from a great band that knows how to deliver.
4:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood, CA, June 26, 2016
Speaking of great bands, we’ve got the tour I deeply regret missing when it pulled into Boston’s House of Blues where the definitive live version of Hungry No More was recorded. I haven’t yet gotten over my short-sightedness on this one. It is a Monday and this is Mudcrutch and, while I’m not declaring it Mudcrutch Monday, it technically is. I felt the need to say that.
After Mudcrutch, it’s wide Open Stream with the Mermaid in charge. I hear she’s got some unannounced Trifectas planned, so I’d better leave it that way. She says you’re just going to have to listen to find out who’s on tap at the top of selected hours. Some of them are new. But my lips are sealed.
