Good morning, weekenders! It’s another relaxed Sunday when you’ll be treated to our wide Open Stream for most of the day! Kick your shoes off and relax.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan NEW!

Undoubtedly one of my favorite Dylan albums as he immersed himself fully in the country music genre. The Nashville recording sessions also spawned some a session with the great Johnny Cash, which we’ve aired on this station many times and will again. One of the songs they recorded, The Girl From The North Country, appeared on this album. The country was in upheaval. Richard Nixon had been elected president in 1968. There were riots everywhere, and Bob Dylan arrived in Nashville and changed the conservative country music perspective. Said Kris Kristofferson, “Our generation owes him our artistic lives because he opened all the doors in Nashville when he did Blonde on Blonde and Nashville Skyline. The country scene was so conservative until he arrived. He brought in a whole new audience. He changed the way people thought about it – even the Grand Ole Opry was never the same again.”

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Hissing of Summer Lawns by Joni Mitchell NEW!

Although Court and Spark remains my favorite in this Mitchell jazz-influenced genre, The Hissing of Summer Lawns continues that trend with a more experimental approach. Her seventh studio album includes jazz-rock contributors The L.A. Express and The Jazz Crusaders, along with appearances by James Taylor, Graham Nash and David Crosby.

4:00 p.m. Paul McCartney Live at The Cavern Club, Liverpool, UK, December 14, 1999 NEW!

We start McCartney’s festival with a live recording of his 1999 show at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, where it all started with The Beatles. The show was in support of his album Run Devil Run, so you’ll hear a lot of great fifties and early sixties covers from those who influenced both his and The Beatles’ music here.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Paul McCartney

This particular set includes not only Macca’s work with Wings and his solo efforts, but many of his Beatle hits also, and will close out today’s programming.

Before there was Live Aid or Farm Aid, there was the Concert for Bangladesh. This first-of-its-kind gathering of musical stars was the conception of George Harrison and Ravi Shankar to benefit the refugees of East Pakistan following the Bangladesh Liberation War-related genocide. Joining Harrison and Shankar were Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston and Badfinger.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Venus And Mars by Paul McCartney & Wings NEW!

This was the fourth studio album by Wings and McCartney’s sixth solo album after the breakup of The Beatles in 1970. It was a follow-up to the great Band On The Run album, and the first to be released on Capitol as opposed to Apple Records. It was recorded in London, New Orleans and Los Angeles, and released in May of 1975. It also resulted in the launch of a massive worldwide tour. I damned near wore this vinyl out, and my favorite song? Call Me Back Again, hands down.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Johnny Rivers UPDATED!

Johnny Rivers was an Italian boy born in New York City, but raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was influenced by the distinctive Louisiana music style. His repertoire includes pop, folk, blues and just plain good old rock n’ roll. He is best remembered for a string of hits between 1964 through 1968, including Memphis, Mountain of Love, Secret Agent Man, and The Seventh Son. He’s also written a number of songs, including Abraham, Martin and John, a great tune that became a hit for Dion. We’ve recently expanded this playlist just a bit and we’ve got it for you today.

3:00 p.m. Banned From the Airwaves: Various Artists

Yes, you can hear these songs today, but when they were first released it was another story. Some were banned for their sexual references, some for their weed references, some because of their references to guns, and some because of their references to the almighty supreme being. We close out the programming with a live performance by a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge. They began as Bob Dylan’s back-up band and turned into one of the most well-respected and influential bands in all of popular music. This one was broadcast live on the legendary radio show, The King Biscuit Flower Hour.

Let’s face it. Mondays suck. The one thing we can offer to improve the situation is great music. Before, in between and after we’ve got some great wide Open Stream, which has recently been significantly bolstered. This is not the place to detail that, but I will be writing a separate blog post on that very soon, so stay tuned! We’ve added some great artists we’ve been working on and bolstered the content of many others!

7:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell Live at Club 47, Cambridge, Massachusetts, January 10, 1968

We go all the way back to 1968 for this Joni Mitchell performance at Club 47 here in the Boston area. It would later be called Passim’s Coffee House. Under either name, it has historically been a great music venue. I remember being in Harvard Square during a snow storm and dropping in to warm up. That was the night I had the honor of seeing Guy Clark for the very first time ever and it was one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life. But I digress. Club 47 was an old haunt for Joni Mitchell, and tonight we play her 1968 performance there in celebration of her 79th birthday (November 7).

Join us here in The Mermaid Lounge for another great day of music. Programming notwithstanding, the majority of our musical day is on wide Open Stream under the supervision of The Music Mermaid.
