On Monday It’s Live Pretenders, a Hot Tuna ‘Spotlight’ Feature, and The Return of Our ‘Friends of Mine’ EP, October 27, 2025

Good morning, working class! We’re back to the work week with style with new live Pretenders, a Hot Tuna ‘Spotlight’ and an evening airing of the ‘Friends of Mine’ EP!

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

We’ve got a new-to-the-station live performance by one of my favorite bands of the eighties (and there were not many) to open up the festivities! Chrissie Hynde is a legend.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Hot Tuna

Another fine band here born of the ashes of Jefferson Airplane. There have been many personnel changes over the years, but Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady have been the anchors from the beginning.

6:00 p.m. Friends of Mine: Various Artists

This EP has been on a hiatus since about March or April, but it’s back for an evening airing. It’s like Open Stream with a Theme with The Guess Who, War, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Todd Rundgren, Amy Winehouse, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, John Prine, Talking Heads, Joan Baez, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Beatles, The Byrds, Carole King, Steppenwolf, Paul McCartney, Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Free, Leon Russell, Robert Johnson, Argent, and more!

We begin yet another week! We’ll be here as always playing the best music on the planet for free. Just hit that button below!

On Thursday It’s The Sixties, New Live Flying Burrito Brothers, and The Beatles’ Songs About the Sun, June 26, 2025

Good morning, musicologists! We’re back with our usual great programming interspersed within our big, wide Open Stream. Read on for the details!

Here’s your musical lineup for today!

9:00 a.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We kick it off with the best music from the best generation with The Beatles, The Hollies, The Mamas & Papas, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Rolling Stones, The Turtles, Three Dog Night, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Blind Faith, Linda Ronstadt, Chuck Berry, The Doors, Stevie Wonder, Vanilla Fudge, Bob Dylan, Steppenwolf, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, The Who, The Kinks, Diana Ross & The Supremes, and more!

On this fine day, The Flying Burrito Brothers shared the stage with The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and Santana. The late, great Gram Parsons was on board and the band brought it.

Tonight we close with Beatle songs with the sun mentioned in the title, lyrics, or both. We did a little bit of digging and we able to add a few more to the list! We never rest here.

Another fantastic day, and the temps have dropped all the way down to 70. We’re grateful for that, and we have several days of pleasant temps ahead. We hope you’ll join us. There’s no obligation, no charge, no interruptions. The button is below.

On Friday It’s Our ‘Wheels’ Playlist, a Bonnie Raitt ‘Spotlight’ Feature and a Tribute to Woody Guthrie, April 18, 2025

Good morning, musicologists! We’ve got a great lineup today, and it includes a tribute to Woody Guthrie on his 100th birthday. Yes, we’re amping up our protest music content, one of our favorite genres. If ever there was a time in our history to do this, it is now.

Here’s your Friday musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Wheels: Various Artists

We start the day with tunes about driving places with Lucinda Williams, Chuck Berry, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bo Diddley, The Who, War, John Prine, The Eagles, The Byrds, Paul McCartney & Wings, Mudcrutch, Tracy Chapman, Steppenwolf, The Kinks, the Grateful Dead, Wilson Pickett, The Doors, Emmylou Harris, Golden Earring and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bonnie Raitt

This afternoon we spend some time with Bonnie Raitt, truly one of the greatest singers and guitarists in music who seems to be ageless.

Did any of us think we’d be here back when these great artists celebrated Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday? We need his music now more than ever. You’ll hear Lucinda Williams, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Ani DeFranco, Sweet Honey In the Rock, Rosanne Cash, Judy Collins, Jackson Browne,Tom Morello and more sing Woody’s songs.

We’ve got plenty of our big, wide Open Stream today with great programmed content sprinkled in. This is just the beginning of our increased protest song focus. More than any other genre, folk music has led the way on this front. The button is below.

Sunday’s EP is All About Friends, Then It’s a Gram Parsons ‘Spotlight’ Feature and Live Jethro Tull, On March 30, 2025

Good morning, musicologists and welcome to Sunday Funday in The Lounge. We’re starting off with five hours of uninterrupted music about friends, some good, some not.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Friends of Mine: Various Artists

We’ve all got ’em. Some are good friends. Some bring you down. You’ll hear from The Guess Who, War, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Todd Rundgren, Amy Winehouse, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, John Prine, Joan Baez, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Beatles, The Byrds, Carole King, Steppenwolf, Paul McCartney, Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Loggins & Messina, Free, Leon Russell, Talking Heads and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Gram Parsons

Gram Parsons was a true visionary of country rock who advanced the genre with The International Submarine Band, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, through his association with the great Emmylou Harris, and as a solo artist. The only thing that kept him from greatness, as with so many others, was drugs. He died at the age of 26 from an overdose of alcohol and morphine. Here in The Lounge, we do not focus on his tragic death, but rather on what he was able to achieve.

We close out the programming today with a new live performance from Jethro Tull at Madison Square Garden.

We’re here through it all. We hope we’re a bit of light in the darkness covering America at this stage. We’re on 24/7 and we don’t cost you any money ever. There’s no commercial interruption either. Join us. And help spread the word. We also to not advertise. The button is below.

On Thursday It’s ‘The Female Species’ EP, a Kris Kristofferson Tribute and Another Trip to Love Street, on October 3, 2024

Here’s your musical mojo:

9:00 a.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

This afternoon we honor Kris Kristofferson’s musical legacy with a concert at Philharmonic Hall. He even brings along a few friends, like Willie Nelson, Rita Coolidge and Larry Gatlin.

We’ve got Volume Two this evening, with Dave Mason, Grin, Gene Clark, Jimmy Webb, Rick Nelson, David Crosby, Tim Buckley, Frank Zappa, Steppenwolf, Glen Campbell, Hoyt Axton, The Turtles, Stephen Stills, Poco and more!

We’re on the case 24/7 with no commercial interruptions and no overly-chatty DJ’s who like to cut off the openings and closings of songs. We promise. And we also promise that there’s no charge for your time in The Mermaid Lounge. The button is below.

On Monday We’ve Got ‘Wheels’, The Beatles Characters and Delbert McClinton As Our Singer-Songwriter, January 22, 2024

Good morning, musicologists and welcome to the first day of yet another work week! We kick off the week with some great playlists in between all that great Open Stream!

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Wheels: Various Artists

Rex, The Who, The Eagles, Janis Joplin, John Prine, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Mudcrutch, The Beatles, Steppenwolf, Wilson Pickett, The Kinks, Alice Cooper and more!

The man in the mack, the barber showing photographs, a lonely person named Eleanor Rigby, a murderous student named Maxwell Silver Hammer, the fool who hangs out on the hill, the banker who doesn’t wear a mack in the pouring rain are all here. And then some.

The amazing Delbert McClinton is an American blues rock-electric blues singer, songwriter, guitarist, harmonica player and pianist. He has been at his craft since 1957 and is still active, his most recent album released in 2022. This evening he is most deservedly introduced as this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

It’s Another Day at The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 11/27/2020

Yes, it’s Black Friday, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge. There isn’t a damned thing we want for here that we have to go out among the teeming, greedy masses to get it.

Shit gets real with The Stones at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Here’s November 27th’s rock n’ roll history:

November 27, 1961: Patsy Cline’s version of Willie Nelson’s Crazy peaks at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It would be the biggest of her four records t cross over to the pop charts from the country charts (where it reached #2).

November 27, 1962: The Beatles recorded songs for the BBC in the UK for the first time ever. They sang Love Me Do, Twist and Shout, and P.S. I Love You at the BBC Paris Studio in London for a program called “Talent Spot.”

November 27, 1964: The Beatles appeared on the British television show called “Ready Steady Go.”

November 27, 1965: Marvin Gaye moved into the #1 slot on the R & B charts with Ain’t That Peculiar.

Also on this day, The Lovin’ Spoonful’s You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice entered the US record charts.

November 27, 1967: The Beatles released the album Magical Mystery Tour in the U.S. and Hello Goodbye as a single in the U.S. on the same day. If that isn’t enough, the B-side of Hello Goodbye, I Am The Walrus, will chart and be a hit as well.

Also on this day, Aretha Franklin released my favorite Aretha song, Chain of Fools.

November 27, 1968: Steppenwolf’s self-titled debut album is certified gold on this day.

November 27, 1969: All kinds of milestones will be reached at Madison Square Garden in New York on this day. The Rolling Stones perform a show that is recorded and later released on Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out. The Ike & Tina Revue opened for the Stones that evening, and Janis Joplin joined Tina on stage for a duet. And in the audience celebrating his 27th, and final, birthday was Jimi Hendrix.

November 27, 1970: George Harrison released his triple album entitled All Things Must Pass. The single release, My Sweet Lord, will be the first ex-Beatle solo effort to hit #1 in both the US and UK.

November 27, 1972: Carly Simon released the single, You’re So Vain.

November 27, 1976: Stevie Wonder’s Songs In The Key Of Life, which debuted at #1, remained at #1 for a seventh week.

November 27, 1979: The Eagles released the single, The Long Run.

November 27 1995: The Beatles set a rock-era record when Anthology 1 sells more than 1.2 million copies in its first week of release.

Born On This Day

November 27, 1934: Al Jackson of Booker T. & The MG’s is born in Memphis, Tennessee.

November 27, 1942: Jimi Hendrix is born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, Washington.

November 27, 1945: Randy Brecker, trumpeter and flugelhorn player for Blood, Sweat & Tears, is born in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania.

November 27, 1948: Dave Winthrop, sax player and flautist for Supertramp, is born.

And that’s Friday’s lesson from The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge. We are posting a bit early today as I’m on the run this morning, and we will be back with today’s programming shortly.
