Good Morning, Ungovernables! This was one of the easiest programming days on the planet for me. Everything just fell into place. I just love that shit.

Both The Beatles and The Doors had two album releases in 1967. This was the second for The Doors and it is most definitely Album of the Week-worthy even though we did feature it once last week. So, here it is again!

3:00 p.m.     The Sixties Rotation, Volume 2: Various Artists

This is always my favorite Sunday of the month. The only question ever is do I choose Volume 1 or Volume 2. Today, the decision was easy because it’s everything the latter part of the sixties were about musically. Features The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, The Yardbirds, The Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, The Mamas & The Papas, Donovan, The Zombies, and so much more. Over five hours of uninterrupted sixties streaming!

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met in grammar school back in 1953, learned how to harmonize together, and began writing music. In 1957, they had their first modest success with Hey Schoolgirl, a song that emulated their idols, The Everly Brothers. The rest is — as they say — history, people.

Today we will bid a fond farewell to Jimi Hendrix’s brilliant debut album. Tomorrow we’ll have another Summer of Love Album of the Week for you.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles   NEW!

Like The Doors, the Beatles had two album releases in 1967. Magical Mystery Tour had the unfortunate task of following up Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, an impossible task. We feature it today because it’s still a great collection of transformative Beatle songs.

10:00 p.m.    Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Winterland Arena, San Francisco, December 31, 1977   NEW! 

What could be better than spending New Year’s Eve with The Grateful Dead in San Francisco? Not much, people.

Singer. Songwriter. Producer. Marvin Gaye helped shape the Motown sound, earning himself a string of hits along with the title,  The Prince of Motown. Today, we give him his due.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! The Monterey International Pop Festival  NEW!

Before Woodstock in 1969, there was the Monterey International Pop Festival held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in California from June 16-18, 1967. The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Johnny Rivers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead, The Mamas & The Papas and many others all graced the stage. It also marked the introduction of Otis Redding to the world.

Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, and he passed away on August 9, 1995 at the age of 53. Today in his honor we replay a Live Dead show from the Boston Music Hall on June 9, 1976.

Literally, one of the most bombastic debuts in rock music history. With one album, Jimi Hendrix went from struggling artist to gamechanger. His unique style would change the world of psychedelic rock forever.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of the Summer of Love, Volume 1: Various Artists   NEW!

The music released during 1967 was, literally, a cultural smorgasbord. It was musical nirvana from Haight-Ashbury all the way to my little street in Medford, where my friends and I lay in the driveway that summer with a transistor listening to WMEX. Back in the day, AM was king.

Our Album of the Week Kicks Off Our ‘Summer of Love’ Experience, I Hear Those Echoes Again, and The Beach Boys Make Us Smile, Sunday, August 9, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a very special new Album of the Week that starts today! It begins our Summer of Love experience here in The Mermaid Lounge!

From now until the end of the  month, we’ll be celebrating the most important cultural aspect of the Summer of Love, the music. It begins today with our Album of the Week!

Here’s your Summer of Love line-up!

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by the Jimi Hendrix Experience   NEW!

The U.S. release of this groundbreaking Hendrix album came on August 23, 1967, right in the thick of the Summer of Love, and it met with both critical and commercial success from the start. To this date, it is considered one of the most powerful debuts in rock music history, and signaled a new direction in psychedelic music. 

3:00 p.m.     Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists

Another amazing musical experience that began in the sixties and continued on: The Laurel Canyon experience with The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys, and The Buffalo Springfield, for starters. You will hear them and many others if you tune in at 3:00 p.m.

7:00 p.m.     The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions

Although this was released by the Beach Boys in 2011, it chronicles the original plans for the Smile album, the Beach Boys planned successor to the Pet Sounds album. Though the original album was abandoned and remains unfinished, the first 19 tracks of The Smile Sessions approximate what it might have sounded like.

George Harrison and Ravi Shankar organized thefirst-ever benefit concert of this magnitude. It took place on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Other artists included Ravi Shankar, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner, and Bob Dylan.

4:00 p.m.     The Inner Sanctum: Study for Murder

Time to get the spooky on, people. This is the final airing of this episode. A brand new episode will begin on Monday, Monday!

6:00 p.m.  The Jefferson Airplane Live in Copenhagen, Denmark, August 28, 1968   NEW!

The Jefferson Airplane was formed in 1965, and pioneered psychedelic rock. They helped to define the San Francisco Sound, and were the first band to achieve commercial success. Their album, Surrealistic Pillow, is considered one of the most significant recordings of the Summer of Love.
