It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Bonnie Raitt & Friends, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Albert King; and REVOLVER Returns as Our AOW on, September 1, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a brand new season as we roll into September! Even better, we kick it off with Tuesday Bluesday!

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Albert King

Here is your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Tuesday Bluesday! Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George, John Hammond & Freebo, Live at Ultrasonic Studios, October 17, 1972   NEW!

Some of the best stuff we have is archival discoveries and, while they may not exactly be technically perfect, it doesn’t matter. A young Bonnie Raitt is hanging out with some friends here an they are conducting a textbook super session. Her youthful versions of Jackson Browne’s Under the Falling Sky and Chris Smither’s Love Me Like a Man are really great,  but her version of Blind Faith’s Can’t Find My Way Home is the most amazing.

When you toss in Lowell George, the grand master of Little Feat, John Hammond and Freebo, you’ve got a super group. Who is Freebo? His real name is Daniel Friedberg, and he’s legend in my generation, a super studio musician who has spent a lot of time supporting Bonnie Raitt. Freebo has also played with Maria Muldaur, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Aaron Neville, John Mayall and many other musicians.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Revolver by The Beatles

The Revolver album signaled what was to come from the Beatles. It was a giant LEAP forward for the band in so many areas. This album is widely considered the most influential album in modern music. Find out why by tuning in.

7:00 p.m.     Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan: In Session,  Recorded Live at CHCH-TV on December 6, 1983

Two blues masters were recorded live at CHCH-TV studios in Hamilton, Ontario, when SRV was 29 years old and King was 60. You can read more about this legendary blues session right here.

Come on, people, it’s a great time to tune us in. We’re here. We’re free. We ask for nada, and we operate totally outside the system. Oh, yeah, we also play great music — rotating more than 25,000 songs — on a 24-hour basis. Non-stop musical nirvana.

Deb’s Stream Offers Up The Animals, Emmylou Harris Rarities Are On Tap, and John Fogerty Live From Red Rocks Later On, Monday, August 31, 2020

It’s another happy Monday here in paradise, but it doesn’t have to suck, people. Find refuge here in The Mermaid Lounge with #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

John Fogerty-1

Here’s today’s line-up:

10:00 a.m.   Emmylou Harris: Rare Tracks & Forgotten Gems

I don’t know if I’m alone in this phenomenon, but sometimes I hear Emmylou Harris and say, “Wow, I forgot that one because nobody ever plays it!” Well, we play them here, and we’re giving them to you today.

2:00 p.m.     Deb’s Stream: Absolutely the Animals!

The Animals have been around since the early sixties, and they are one badass British rhythm & blues band. The band was formed in Newcastle upon Tyne, but moved to London when they finally took hold in 1964. Eric Burdon is a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge.

7:00 p.m.      John Fogerty’s 50-Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, June 20, 2019  NEW!

In 2019, John Fogerty celebrated Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 50-year anniversary of their appearance at Woodstock (the original, of course) with an appearance at Red Rocks Amphitheater, one of the most beautiful of all concert venues on the planet. We love both John Fogerty and Creedence here in The Mermaid Lounge. Enjoy!

It’s Monday. Give yourself a break. Pull up a tab and click the link below. That’s really all it takes.

The Summer of Love is in Charge Today With The Doors, John Mayall, and a Great Little Album That Goes Unnoticed, Thursday, August 20, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Somehow, this 1967 programming just kind of fell in my lap very late last night. Sometimes, without trying, things just kind of fall together!

Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.   John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live in 1967

If you follow this station and read this blog (something you should all be doing, by the way), you know we’re into music in all forms. Some of the stuff is fan recorded, and that’s just fine with us. This particular entry is short on quality, but big on blues history. After Clapton left the band, the void was filled by Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. They would go on to form Fleetwood Mac which, by the way, started with Peter Green on vocals and was an actual blues band. Get past the fan-recorded aspect of this and enjoy. By the way, if you listen to Ye, this is probably not your venue.

3:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Strange Days by The Doors

The second Doors release of the Summer of Love. As I have said previously, it did not disappoint after their fantastic debut, The Doors.

7:00 p.m.    The Best of The Summer of Love! Evergreen, Volume 2 by The Stone Poneys   NEW!

Speaking of two releases in one year, The Stone Poneys also accomplished that feat in 1967, with this release coming just five months after their debut. Nobody talks about this in ‘Summer of Love’ terms, but this was released right in the heart of it, June 1967. Unlike their debut album, Linda Ronstadt was prominently featured on vocals. Not surprisingly, it would be the most successful of their three releases before she exploded onto the music scene.

Linda Ronstadt left Tucson for L.A. with Bobby Kimmel (guitarist) to make music. They hooked up with a guy named Kenny Edwards, who would later be a very important cog in her back-up band. This is a portrait of Linda Ronstadt before we knew her, in a more trippy vein. Great stuff.

Good day to become a fan, people. I cannot emphasize this more: All you need is a browser and a tab. The rest is a breeze. No money. No credit card required. No personal information requested. Just free music. No shit. No bullshit. No lie.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday with Roomful of Blues, The Allman Brothers Band, and Joni Mitchell’s “Miles of Aisles,” July 28, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Here we are with another Tuesday Bluesday and we’ve got Roomful of Blues in The Spotlight, with the Allman Brothers Band bringing up the rear a bit later. Sandwiched in between is our Album of the Week.

Roomful of Blues

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Tuesday Bluesday With Roomful of Blues in The Spotlight!   NEW!

This is a great fucking band whose name is not on the tip of everybody’s tongue, in spite of their critically-acclaimed history and their 50-year recording career. I’ve been listening to them for a while and even saw them once. They are based in Rhode Island, and began in 1967 when guitarist Duke Robillard and pianist Al Copley formed Roomful of Blues. They have changed personnel over the years and have added horns, exploring the R & B and swing influence. Here in The Mermaid Lounge, we are now beginning to upload their catalogue. Here’s a preview.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Miles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell

A musical review of Mitchell’s tour in support of the amazing Court & Spark album. It was Joni Mitchell’s first live album, and her first tour with a backing band — Tom Scott & The L.A. Express.

7:00 p.m.    The Allman Brothers Band Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival, July 3 & 5, 1970

It’s like a Tuesday Bluesday double feature here today in The Mermaid Lounge. We add the grand kahuna of blues here with the brothers.

Join us, people. We’re free. No personal information required. No credit card required. And that’s because we’re totally free and outside the capitalist system in all respects. What are you waiting for?

Call It Simple Programming Sunday: We Pay Our Respects to Peter Green, Premier Blues Guitarist and Co-Founder of the Original Fleetwood Mac & Joni Mitchell Owns Our Album of The Week, July 26, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Today we pay our respects to Peter Green, co-founder of the Original Fleetwood Mac (they really are two quite different bands with and without Peter), and we keep the women front and center with Joni Mitchells Miles of Aisles.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac-1

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up!

11:00 a.m.    Album of The Week: Miles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell   NEW!

Released in 1974, this Joni Mitchell album is a collection of songs from the tour she did in support of her brilliant album, Court & Spark. Not only was it Mitchell’s very first live album, but it was her first tour with a backing band. In a brilliant move, she chose Tom Scott & The L.A. Express.

I saw this tour on its trip through Beantown. It was at the Music Hall when it really was the music hall, and it was — hands down — one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.

3:00 p.m.     Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Live at The Warehouse, New Orleans, January 30, 1970   NEW!

Peter Green and The Original Bluesy Fleetwood Mac opened The Warehouse with this show back in the day when they were a blues band and not a bunch of pop-rockers. Although he led a troubled life after he left the band, his contribution to the blues cannot be denied. He passed yesterday at the age of 73. Today, we pay him the respect he deserves.

I can’t fathom what the hell Americans are thinking. It matters not, though, because the rest of the world is listening in. We’ve always bee playing catch-up, no matter what they tell you about American Exceptionalism. It’s overrated.

Women’s Week Brings Us Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur on Thursday, July 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! The next few days here are big days for the ladies of rock n’ roll as we move toward the end of Women’s Week. Today’s programming is only seven hours worth, but it’s packed with great stuff.

maria-muldaur

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore

Lucinda Williams hails from Louisiana and somehow you can just feel that coming through in her gritty music. Among her peers, she’s one of the most respected and influential singer-songwriters in the business. You’d never know it because — no matter how you look at it — women are still considered second-class citizens in the rock world. At least these women are. The little blonde sound-alike waifs they prop up on stage these days are no match.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Western Wall: The Tuscon Sessions by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris

This is one of those albums that musicians feel in their soul. It may not be a platinum seller, but that’s not why it’s being done. It’s one of the things you have the opportunity to make after you’ve paid your dues in the business. And both Ronstadt and Harris have done just that.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur   NEW!

Friend of Linda, Bonnie, Kate & Anna McGarrigle and many others. Maria Muldaur has been out there since the great folk revival of the sixties. She has been gracing us with her own solo work and also singing background and harmonies with just about everyone else, including Linda Ronstadt, the Jerry Garcia Band, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, and Paul Butterfield. Today she gets The Spotlight, and deservedly so.

This is — without a doubt — an excellent week to tune in #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We still have a long way to go with Women’s Week, and we have a lot of women still to air — both well known and not so well-known. Tune us in.

It’s a Busy Day in The Mermaid Lounge: The Allman Brothers & Eric Clapton, Live Dead, Another Ronstadt Playlist, and The Final Airing of the AOW, Saturday, July 18, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a busy day here, music lovers! We’re getting ready to kick off Women’s Week tomorrow on #BecomeUngovernable Radio, so tune us in!

Allman Bros with Eric Clapton

Here’s your line up!

11:00 a.m.   The Allman Brothers Band Live With Eric Clapton, March 19, 2009

The blues from the blues masters right here. There’s a reason why these guys have lasted decades.

4:00 p.m.    Album of The Week: Déja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Crosby, Stills, Nash & (sometimes) Young, along with their 1970 masterpiece, helped me survive the disco generation. There were others. You hear them on this station daily. This is the final airing; there will be a new choice tomorrow!

7:00 p.m.    Linda Ronstadt: The Ballads   NEW!

Here’s another of those artists that I mentioned above. There should be a formal warning with this playlist: There are songs here where Ronstadt’s unparalleled voice will literally blow your doors off.

10:00 p.m.   Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Rainbow Theater, London, October 6, 1981   NEW!

Another soundboard recording of a great Dead concert, this time from the Rainbow Theater in London!

You have no idea what you are missing here: 24/7 streaming of the best music possible with no commercial interruptions, no political talk, no bullshit. All free every single day. What are you waiting for?

Van Morrison Live in San Sebastian, The Yardbirds Play at B. B. King’s Place on Tuesday Bluesday, and Our Album of The Week, Tuesday, July 14, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’ve got a great line-up today, includng a new Van Morrison live performance, and The Yardbirds are on tap for Tuesday Bluesday.

Here’s what’s on tap for today!

11:00 a.m.   Van Morrison Live at the Plaza de la Trinidad, San Sebastian, Spain, July 27 1999  NEW!

Van Morrison is a legend during his time, a masterful musician, singer, and songwriter, whose career began back in 1958. His first band was the British blues band, Them. His solo career begin in 1967 with the release of the iconic Brown Eyed Girl. He has never looked back, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge are happy he keeps on going.

The set list for this show is already in the Playlist section of the blog. Just scroll to the bottom!

3:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Déja Vu by Crosby, Stills Nash & Young

The second studio album by Crosby, Stills & Nash is also the first with Neil Young on board. You can always read more about our Album of the Week by clicking on the album image in the right-hand sidebar of this blog.

7:00 p.m.   Tuesday Bluesday! The Yardbirds Live at B. B. King’s Blues Club, July 19, 2006

The Yardbirds personnel have changed repeatedly over the years. They never seem to disappoint, regardless of who’s on board.

Listen, we’re totally outside the system. None of this music has been sourced from either Amazon or Apple. We do not charge a fee. We do not require a credit card. And we definitely do not require that you fill out personal information so we can sell you shit later.  We just invite you to tune in.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday, Our Album of the Week is Back, and Happy 80th Birthday, Ringo! Tuesday, July 7, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Tuesday Bluesday is back and we’re heading down Louisiana way for today’s offering. And it’s Ringo’s 80th birthday, and we pay respects to him, an often underrated very important cog in the Beatles’ musical wheel.

ringo

Here’s today’s Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   DJ’s Choice: My Favorite Ringo Starr Songs   NEW!

A simple four-drum kit was all Ringo needed to make his sound. If you watched the video I posted earlier on the #BecomeUngovernable Radio Facebook page, you’ll see that his peers revere that sound and try to recapture it. Ringo didn’t need to steal the show. He drummed to the level that the song required. He was never bigger than the song itself.

You can check out that great Ringo video here!

3:00 p.m.    Album of The Week: Homegrown by Neil Young

The release is finally here! Originally shelved in 1975, Neil Young’s 40th studio release, Homegrown, has hit the airwaves.

7:00 p.m.    Tuesday Bluesday: The Best of Louisiana Blues, Volume 1

Today we do something a bit different and head down to N’awlins for some Louisiana Blues!

Like Ringo, #BecomeUngovernable Radio is never bigger than the music. We’re free. No advertising. No credit card required. No politics. No bullshit. Just music 24/7.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band, The Doors Take The Spotlight, and Our Album of The Week, Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge and we have an oldie but goodie for you today.

Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band

Here’s your line-up for Tuesday:

11:00 a.m.  Tuesday Bluesday! Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band, Live in Amsterdam, April 1, 1969   NEW!

The Kozmic Blues Band was but one of the bands that Janis fronted after Big Brother & The Holding Company and before Full Tilt Boogie, as she continued her quest for the “perfect” band. There isn’t much information out there about the band, other than the members’ names. The link I provided is just about the best info you can find out there, and it’s a fan site.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Good Souls Better Angels by Lucinda Williams

The latest album from Lucinda Williams is our featured album this week. You can learn more about this album by clicking on the photo in the right sidebar on this blog.

6:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

Like Janis Joplin, The Doors’ leader, Jim Morrison, is one of the members of the ’27 Club’, the rockers who died in their 27th year. There are several others in this group, including Gram Parsons, Jimi Hendrix, and Brian Jones. The Doors were only a factor for four years but, in four years, they made some seriously great fucking music.

It’s time to tune us in! We’re sitting here waiting for you.
