The band’s debut album was recorded over three days in 1966 and released in 1967. After the band’s success at the Monterey Pop festival, their contract was taken over by Columbia. The album was then re-released with the words “featuring Janis Joplin” on the cover. That was the beginning of her meteoric rise before her sad demise. This is our final airing today. Don’t miss it.

2:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this station takes over here and brings you into the evening. This is the infamously great concert with Valerie Carter as the opener and on stage with Linda backing her up during the main event. The good music fairy was shining down that day. It’s not often you get to see two great singers together on the same stage, but I was fortunate on this particular night.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of John Prine

John Prine was a genuine original, a country-folk singer-songwriter who often used his great wit and introspection to write (sometimes) humorous songs containing elements of protest and social commentary. I was fortunate to see him once during my lifetime (and his), but wish it had been more. We own all of his material here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ll play it for you later today.

They join The Doors, Canned Heat, The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, The Mamas & The Papas and others from the first wave.

We’ve updated this playlist to over four hours of great music, officially making it our newest extended player. Oh yeah, we’ve also changed the name.

We haven’t heard from this guy for a while, so it’s about time. This playlist features his music from his partnership with Art Garfunkel to his solo work.
