Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another Monday morning here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a great line-up for you to start the week off with.

Today we’ve got some Cajun music from the Magnolia Sisters!

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Our number one supergroup here in these parts is for sure The Traveling Wilburys, but these guys are right behind them at number two. Crosby, Stills & Nash were the original configuration, but Neil Young added a dimension that cannot be denied, giving them the Canadian portion of this Canadian-American supergroup. They made some great music together, and we’ve got them In the Spotlight to start off the day.

3:00 p.m. The Magnolia Sisters: Live at the Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival, Rancho Santa Susanna Community Park, Simi Valley, California, May 23, 2015

We love Cajun-Zydeco here in the Lounge as you know, and we’ve got a short but sweet performance here by the only all-girl Cajun band on the planet. Ann Savoy is the impetus behind the Magnolia Sisters. For those who may not know her, she teamed up with Linda Ronstadt (as the Zozo Sisters) for the brilliant Grammy-nominated album Adieu False Heart, and their remake release of Walk Away Renee. Their music is part of our standard rotation, but we hope to bolster this genre of music in 2022, starting today. We remain on the hunt for more live music from The Magnolia Sisters.

Nope. It’s not quite an EP, but that’s okay because we do need some short players as well. This is all about the color black in song…in the title or lyrics, or both. The Paradise Rock Club in Boston (well, technically Cambridge) played host to a very young Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. This would have been earlier than Damn The Torpedoes, the album that put them on the map. That momentous event would not come for another year. This is vintage, early Heartbreakers, and I was there.

This was the second such playlist we put together in this vein. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Teaser and the Firecat by Cat Stevens (also known as Yusuf Islam) NEW!

This is one of the Cat’s best albums and is undoubtedly one of my favorite albums of all time. I recently read a review of the album where the author stated that Cat Stevens was a “pop” artist at heart. It’s funny how music is in the ears of the beholder. I’ve always viewed Cat Stevens as a folk-rock musician. Labels do not matter, at the end of the day. It’s what you like. On a more somber note, I remember the dark days after the 9-11 attacks, and Cat Stevens being denied entry into the United States because he had converted to Islam. I have a difficult time imagining Cat Stevens as a terrorist. Seriously.

There have been many players in the evolution of what has come to be known as country-rock. This 1969 release, the first from The Flying Burrito Brothers, continued the work of two of the most notable musicians in this process, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, both veterans of The Byrds (who were also players). These guys married country to other forms of popular music, like gospel, soul, and psychedelic rock, and it’s all on display here in this great new Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This one is due for an update soon, but it remains formidable as it is, as this first sixties EP focuses on early-to-mid music of the great generation. This one could have gone on for a few more hours…at least. In spite of what it sounds like, this isn’t a socio-political playlist. It’s simply songs with the word woman, lady or girl in the title and in the lyrics. In a collection of 27,000 songs, I can tell you there were plenty more that didn’t make this list. Yet. I didn’t want to get carried away. 7:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & The Nash Ramblers Live at The Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN, Recorded Live April 30-May 2, 1991

By the time Emmylou Harris brought her newly-formed band to the fabled Ryman Auditorium in 1991, it had been dormant for nearly twenty years. Once the home of The Grand Old Opry, it’s heyday was just a memory. The Opry had moved on to bigger and better digs. Emmylou Harris changed all that. Her concerts at the Ryman were — for lack of a better word — brilliant. They were so critically acclaimed that she literally saved The Ryman single handedly.

Following Emmylou’s shows, a renewed interest was sparked in The Ryman. The building was completely renovated and has become a world class concert hall. And in case you’re wondering who The Nash Ramblers are:

Sam Bush on fiddle, mandolin and vocals

Roy Huskey, Jr. on double bass and vocals

Larry Atamanuik on drums

Al Perkins on banjo, guitar, resonator guitar, and vocals

John Randall Stewart on guitar, mandolin, and vocals

Then, of course, there’s Emmylou Harris, an artist and musician who continually seeks to make a difference with her music.

I say this every single day, but it’s a great day to tune us in. Emmylou Harris’ Ryman concert makes it worth the effort alone. (I can’t say it’s worth the price of admission because there is NO price of admission here in The Mermaid Lounge.) So, what are you waiting for?

Good Morning, Long Weekenders! We move into fall in style today with an appropriately-titled Album of The Week, and our infamous Original Sixties Rotation this afternoon and into the evening.

We’ve got the music that inspired the radio station today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Harvest by Neil Young NEW!

This great piece of genius was Young’s fourth studio album, released in February of 1972. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two of the cuts, as well as guest singers Graham Nash, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Stephen Stills. It resulted in two singles, Old Man and Heart of Gold, which went to number one on Billboard. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang the backgrounds on Heart of Gold, one of my all-time favorite songs on the planet. It was the best-selling album of 1972, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. Need I say more?

4:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is one of the very first playlists we ever put together. Since we started, it has developed into an extended play event, covering more than five hours of songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Fats Domino, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Lulu, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Peter & Gordon, Jefferson Airplane, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Petula Clark, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and more.

Sister Kate does her family name proud.

Great rockers never really die, and neither do great singer-songwriters. And Jackson Browne is one of the elites in my book. In every article I read, the album is being described as a boomer faces his own mortality, and it may well be that because Jackson Browne has always been introspective. Do I think it’s his best? No. Do I think it’s a great album? I do. Especially since I sometimes too find myself confronting my own mortality.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is due for an update, but it’s pretty damned serviceable as it is. We have two sixties rotations because we have so much sixties music. This is more geared toward the earlier part of the sixties. Since this is the first of the two we put together, we can it The Original Sixties Rotation. It is indeed the music that inspired me to start this station and share my record collection with you. More than five hours of sixties music uninterrupted begins at mid-day.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Old Yellow Moon by Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell NEW!

This fantastic 2013 release won the Grammy Award for the Best Americana Album. It was Harris’ 13th Grammy. The album itself was her twenty-seventh studio release, and Crowell’s tenth. Although they originally met in 1974, it took them until 2012 to record an album together. I saw the tour promoting this album, and the musical chemistry between Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell was amazing.

It only took the pair two years to release a follow up album called The Travelin’ Kind, and we’ll be featuring that as a future Album of The Week.

This was the very first playlist we ever put together back when we started, and it features The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, Bobbie Gentry, Little Eva, The Searchers, The Who, The Supremes, Bob Dylan, The Hollies, The Turtles, Petula Clark, Barry McGuire, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Kinks, and many more!
