9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Revelator by Tedeschi Trucks Band NEW!

Susan Tedeschi has been around for a while, and so has Derek Trucks. But they put it all together in 2011 with the debut album of their fine band, Revelator. If you like blues-rock, this is is where you should be, people. Recorded in Susan and Derek’s Swamp Raga Studios in Jacksonville, Florida, the band shows that they are more than just a great ‘live’ band. Co-produced by Derek Trucks and producer/engineer Jim Scott, Revelator went on to with the Best Blues Album at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, and Derek Trucks has established himself as one of the finest guitar players on the planet. George Harrison’s birthday was on February 25. We may be a bit late here in The Mermaid Lounge on birthdays but we’re never a dollar short. We play Harrison’s best stuff as the lead guitarist of The Beatles, as Nelson Wilbury, and from his solo efforts. Happy Birthday, George.

We’re winding down on this week’s chosen album. This is our next-to-last airing; our final airing will be on Saturday before we choose a new album to take us through the first week of the new year.

Somehow when we first put this one together, we forgot the Spencer Davis Group portion of Winwood’s brilliant career. We remedied that and have a brand new version of this playlist up today. Our Winwood “Spotlight” highlights Winwood’s solo career as well, but this one is dedicated to his “band” work of the sixties and early seventies.

It’s a great day to listen to music. In fact, every damned day is a great day to listen to music. And this is the best place to get that music if you’re thinking like us. I’m not going to lie to you. Sadly, we’re winding down on this week’s selection. This is our second to last airing, with the final being sometime on Saturday. Get it while you can. This is a great album, and Valerie Carter is a great singer-songwriter.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Steve Winwood

Steve Winwood has given us so much great music over the years. This Spotlight feature covers his time with The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic, and his solo career. You’ll hear a song titled Valerie in this set which is, oddly enough, said to be about the late, great Valerie Carter (see above). I saw him live at Great Woods (not when it was The Tweeter Center or The Comcast Center), and it was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.

December 26, 1960: Elvis Presley’s Are you Lonesome Tonight was at $1 for a fifth week.

December 26, 1963: The Beatles release their first hit single in the US, I Want To Hold Your Hand backed by I Saw Her Standing There. It’s their first single released by Capitol Records; within months Beatlemania will be full-blown in the States.

December 26, 1964: The Beatles score another #1 with I Feel Fine. They finish the year with six #1 songs and own the top spot on the chart for 18 weeks.

December 26, 1966: The Spencer Davis Group release the single Gimme’ Some Lovin‘ which was written by seventeen-year-old Steve Winwood.

Also on this day, Jimi Hendrix wrote the words to Purple Haze in his dressing room between shows at London’s Uppercrust Club.

December 26, 1967: The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour film debuts on BBC-TV.

Also on this day, The Doors and Chuck Berry open a weeklong series of concerts at The Fillmore West in San Francisco.

December 26, 1968: Led Zeppelin’s first US tour begins in Denver, Colorado, where they are the opening act for Vanilla Fudge.

Also on this day, D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary, Monterey Pop, which chronicles the 1967 Monterey International Pop Music Festival, opened in theaters. This was the concert where The Who smashed their instruments and Hendrix lit his guitar on fire.

December 26, 1970: George Harrison becomes the first ex-Beatle to top the Hot 100 as a solo act as My Sweel Lord hits #1.

Also on this day, a new singer from Canada named Gordon Lightfoot enters the charts for the first time with If You Could Read My Mind. He will make some great music in his time.

December 26, 1979: Paul McCartney held the first of three concerts at Hammersmith Odeon in London to benefit relief efforts in war-torn Kampuchea. He was joined by The Who, The Clash, Queen, Elvis Costello, and Rockpile.

December 26, 1935: Duke Fakir of the Four Tops was born Abdul Fakir in Detroit, Michigan.

December 26, 1940: Famed record producer and despicable human being, Phil Spector, was born in The Bronx, New York.

December 26, 1946: Bob Carpenter, keyboardist and accordionist for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
