Volume Two of The Sixties, Hank Williams and ‘Live’ Little Feat Are in the Plan for Wednesday, December 27, 2023

Yes, music lovers, we’re motoring toward our sixth year playing tunes her in The Mermaid Lounge, and we are going out in style.

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The sixties are back for another round, this time covering the mid-to-late part of the decade with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, James Brown, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, B.B. King, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan, The Band, Judy Collins, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival and more!

4:00 p.m.  Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Hank Williams

The late, great Hank Williams is back for his second airing as our featured singer-songwriter.

8:00 p.m.  Little Feat Live at Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, New York, April 10, 1973

Nothing like a live performance by Little Feat. I saw them for the first time at Harvard Square Theater when they opened for Jerry Jeff Walker. Have loved them ever since, but there is nothing like the Lowell George version of the band. Some artists just cannot be replaced.

We’re at midweek and we’re cooking with gas. Get on board. The music’s free; no credit card required; no personal information requested. And we’re not tracking you because we’re not selling you anything. Our music is uninterrupted by commercial advertising.

Good morning, music lovers! We are on the sixties path this morning as we open up with music from the early-to-mid part of the decade, Carlene Carter gets her final AOW airing, and we introduce the late, great Hank Williams as our singer-songwriter.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

Jump into the Wayback Machine with us and hear Del Shannon, Little Eva, The Beatles, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, The Walker Brothers, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, The Searchers, The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Petula Clark, Glen Campbell, Johnny Rivers, The Dave Clark Five, The Supremes, Harry Nilsson, The Band, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Simon & Garfunkel, Blind Faith, Janis Joplin, The Temptations, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, The Who, Tony Joe White, Barry McGuire, Procol Harum, Fats Domino and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Two Sides To Every Woman by Carlene Carter FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of Carlene Carter’s featured album. There’ll be a new selection tomorrow.

Hank Williams was a musical genius, and remains the most revered country music artist in spite of the fact that he died six decades ago at the age of 29. The volume of songs he wrote and left behind in a short period of time is amazing, and his contribution to the development of rock and roll cannot be denied. Today he becomes our featured singer-songwriter for the week.

It’s Simply Sunday With Carlene Carter’s AOW and Our ‘A Little Bit O’Soul’ Multi-Artist EP, December 17, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! We’re here on another lighter-than-usual programming day with plenty of our great wide Open Stream. We kick things off with June Carter’s daughter and Johnny Cash’s stepdaughter, Carlene Carter.

Here’s your musical lineup:

Carlene Carter boasts the lineage of The Carter Family. She’s the daughter of June Carter and her first husband, the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, and the stepsister of country great Rosanne Cash. She’s had a rough-and-tumble life with multiple failed relationships (including a marriage to Nick Lowe, and a long-standing relationship with late, great Heartbreaker Howie Epstein), and plenty of drug offenses, but she has made some supremely good music over the years. Much of her early stuff, like this album, has been overlooked and we hope to change that here.

3:00 p.m.  A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

We’re back with our big, bad soul and rhythm & blues EP with music from Motown to Muscle Shoals to Atlantic and beyond. You’ll hear Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, LaVern Baker, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Irma Thomas, The Box Tops, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Percy Sledge and more!

It’s Motown at Midweek, Followed by Singer-Songwriters Tom Waits and Bob Dylan on Wednesday, November 8, 2023

Welcome to midweek in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we kick it off with our ‘M is For Motown’ EP, followed by Tom Waits, and the love songs of Bob Dylan.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. M is For Motown: Various Artists

We’re back with music from Motor City as we give you the best of Motown during the sixties and seventies. You’ll hear Barrett Strong, Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Holland, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Rare Earth, Mary Wells, Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross & The Supremes and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Tom Waits

Tom Waits and his trademark gravelly voice are back for his second spin as our featured singer-songwriter for the week.

8:00 p.m. Bob Dylan: The Love Songs

We all know Mr. Dylan, our very first featured singer-songwriter, is undoubtedly the most accomplished musician and performer of his generation, even winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. In fact, his talents redefined the boundaries of literature. However, he didn’t just write social consciousness lyrics. Dylan just happened to write some of the most incredible love songs on the planet. See for yourself.

I could say this would be a great day to join us, but every day is a great day to join us. That’s because we are on 24/7 at no charge to you, we run no commercial advertising, and our D.J. is practically mute. That is every single day.

The legendary Steve Winwood stops by with his Album of the Week this afternoon.

We’ve got some great new Laura Nyro recorded ‘live’ in two locations in Japan tonight. We know the great Laura Nyro is mostly known for writing hits for others, like The Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand, Blood, Sweat & Tears and so many more. But there is nothing like hearing Laura Nyro sing her own songs. It’s a whole new dimension.

It’s Simply Sunday With Ronstadt’s “Duets” AOW, and the ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’ Multi-Artist EP on October 15, 2023

Good morning, weekenders. You’ve got one day left to kick back and relax and that’s today. We keep it simple here with plenty of wide Open Stream on Sundays, and this one is no exception.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

The Final Airing of Our AOW, the Big, Bad Motown EP, and Cat Stevens as Our Singer-Songwriter, Saturday, October 7, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! We’ve got a great lineup for you today as we hit the weekend! Our big show is Motown, mostly centered around the sixties and seventies. Great stuff.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: New York Tendaberry by Laura Nyro FINAL AIRING!

Today will be the final airing of Laura Nyro’s middle album in a great early-career trilogy. Get on it while you can!

12:00 p.m. M is For Motown: Various Artists

The sounds of Hitsville, U.S.A. The music that made America dance.

Today, we introduce Yusuf/Cat Stevens as our featured singer-songwriter, a troubadour and songwriter who occupied my young world when he first made his debut. I played Teaser & The Firecat until the grooves were gone. He’s a fine songwriter, musician and singer who suffered unjustly because he had converted to Islam prior to the 9-11 fiasco. At one point, they wouldn’t even allow him into the U.S. for his tour. The man is an American, people. Get over it.

We’re Weekend Bound With the ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, Our AOW and an Ann Peebles Spotlight on Thursday, September 14, 2023

9:00 a.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

We collect all the great artists from Motown, Muscle Shoals, Soulsville U.S.A. and beyond for this one with Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, LaVern Baker, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Irma Thomas, The Box Tops, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Eddie Floyd, Percy Sledge, Wanda Jackson, The Ad Libs, Joe Tex, Ann Peebles, Al Green and more.

We’re winding down on this gem. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday, so get in on this while you can!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Ann Peebles

With all the great souls stars out there, sometimes Ann Peebles gets lost in the crowd, but that should never be the case. A fine soul singer, she is best known for her Memphis R & B albums of the seventies. Tune her in.

We’ve got soul on both ends of the programming day here today, with a little bit of McCartney genius in between. A fine day to be in The Mermaid Lounge with the rest of us. Be there or be square, as they used to say.

This evening we introduce Roger McGuinn as our featured singer-songwriter for the upcoming week, mainly focusing on his work with The Byrds. As with all of our artists in this series, they don’t just write the music. They sing it as well. And some of these songs are not written by them. But that’s why they call them singer-songwriters.
