Good Morning, Music Lovers across the universe! We’re here in The Mermaid Lounge on this lovely day, and it’s time for another visit from our friends from across the pond, as they say. Wilson Pickett will also give us our Album of The Week.

They don’t call him “Wicked” Wilson Pickett for nothing. Wilson Pickett was a major player in establishing the genre of American soul music, with more than 50 songs making the R & B charts. And many of those songs crossed over into the Billboard Hot 100. It’s about time he’s recognized in this venue.

It’s Another Monday at The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 12/14/2020

Good Morning, Students! We have your Monday morning lesson right here from The Mermaid Lounge, then we’re coming back with today’s line up!

Gladys Knight & The Pips, who made the original version (and a fucking great version, by the way) of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine, but it is Marvin Gaye’s later version that is considered the definitive version. How did that happen?

Here’s today’s lesson:

December 14, 1963: The Beatles’ I Want To Hold Your Hand begins five weeks at #1 on the UK charts. It replaced She Loves You, which was #1 for two weeks. This is the first time ever a band has replaced itself on the charts with a new song.

December 14, 1964: Although banned by some radio stations, The Kingsmen’s Louie Louie goes to #2 on the Hot 100. Only the Singing Nun could keep the from #1.

December 14, 1968: Tommy James & The Shondells released Crimson & Clover. (Over and over.)

Marvin Gaye’s I Heard It Through The Grapevine hits #1 in the US, where it stays for seven weeks. Gladys Knight & The Pips released a version in 1967 (my favorite version of the song, actually) and it went to #2 then. In spite of that, Marvin Gaye’s is considered the definitive version. I love Marvin Gaye, but I disagree.

Motown Acts own the top three spots on the Hot 100 on this day: (1) I Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye; (2) Love Child by The Supremes; and (3) For Once In My Life by Stevie Wonder.

Big Brother & The Holding Company’s album, Cheap Thrills, remained at #1 on the Album charts.

December 14, 1995: Released classified documents revealed that John Lennon wasn’t paranoid. The FBI had been spying on Lennon and his antiwar activities during Tricky Dick’s regime with the goal of having him deported.

December 14, 1943: Frank Allen, bassist for The Searchers, was born in Hayes, West London, England.

December 14, 1946: Jackie McAuley, keyboardist/vocalist with Them, was born in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

Another Early Morning Lesson From The Mermaid Lounge: 12/3/2020

Good Morning, Students! Here we are again with a lesson in rock n’ roll history from the College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge. We’re not as active as some days today, but we do pick and choose our subjects here. There are a lot of people we don’t give a flying fuck about, like Madonna. JayZ. Lady GaGa. Kanye West, the waste of musical space, and so on.

Tom Petty’s final shows. Ever.

And now, today’s lesson:

December 3, 1955: Elvis Presley’s first release on RCA Victor Records was announced. The first two were purchased from Sam Phillips at Sun Records, Mystery Train and I Forgot To Remember To Forget.

December 3, 1961: Brian Epstein makes his first pitch to become The Beatles’ manager. Although the meeting goes well, there is no decision on this day.

December 3, 1965: Keith Richards cuts it close. He steps on a microphone cable and is electrocuted and knocked unconscious during a Stones concert in Sacramento. After a short break, Richards is able to come back and play.

Also on this day, The Beatles release the album Rubber Soul and the single Nowhere Man in the UK.

December 3, 1966: Paul Revere & The Raiders had their sixth Billboard Top 40 hit enter the Top 100. Good Thing will climb the charts and eventually reach #4, It stays on the charts for ten weeks.

December 3, 1968: It’s a Banner Day for Gold Records: The Grass Roots song Midnight Confessions is certified Gold on this day; and the albums Aretha Now by Aretha Franklin and Fresh Cream by Cream are certified Gold as well.

The Montreux Casino caught fire and burned during a show by Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention. The event is immortalized in the song Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Deep Purple was supposed to begin working on their Machine Head album the following day.

December 3, 1976: Bob Marley narrowly escapes an assassination attempt. Seven gunmen sprayed bullets into his Kingston, Jamaica, home where he and the Wailers were rehearsing. Marley had become unpopular in some circles due to his influence over some local politicians. He moved to Florida a short time after the incident.

December 3, 2003: The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) gave Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers a Diamond Award, markng the sale of 10 million copies of their Greatest Hits album in the U.S.

Van Morrison “Live” in Montreux, Linda Ronstadt “Live” at Rockpalast, The Band in the Spotlight, and Our Album of the Week, Thursday, April 9, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re getting off to an early posting start because we’re getting off to a 10:00 a.m. musical start!

This is not only one of my favorite all-time albums, but the song Gimme’ Shelter is one of my all-time favorite songs. That inerlude by Merry Clayton is amazing.

1:00 p.m.    Van Morrison: Live From Montreux, Switzerland   NEW!

Van Morrison was built to last. He began his career in 1964 with the British blues band Them. They were billed as part of the British Invasion, and their most famous hit is Gloria, but I also remember them for Baby Please Don’t Go. For Van Morrison and his fans (and I am one), the rest is history. 

5:00 p.m.   Linda Ronstadt: Live at Rockpalast, Germany

Speaking of built to last. I have no doubt that Linda Ronstadt would still be musically contributing in some way had she not been robbed of her lifeblood by Parkinsons. What we do have is an amazing body of work that crosses all kinds of genres and defied the naysayers who said, “You can’t sing that. You’ll ruin your career.” She did. And it didn’t.

8:00 a.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

Yeah. And then, there’s these guys. This is the perfect way to close out today.
