Although not a commercial success like Dylan, Townes Van Zandt is often put on the same pedestal. He was a prolific songwriter whose compositions are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, such as Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, Tecumseh Valley and If I Needed You. His songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, including Emmylou Harris (the absolute best version of Pancho & Lefty ever, IMO), Norah Jones, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan himself.

10:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness!

Tom Leadon, who was Tom Petty’s childhood friend and founding member and lead guitarist of Mudcrutch, passed away on March 22 from natural causes at the age of 70. He was also, at various times the bass player in Linda Ronstadt’s band. He was brother to Bernie Leadon, a founding member of The Eagles. This seems like a good time to break out the entire Mudcrutch catalogue in memory of Tom.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur began her illustrious career as part of the great folk revival of the sixties, playing the Greenwich Village clubs with Bob Dylan and John Sebastian. She then joined the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. When they disbanded, she embarked on her solo career recording albums in the folk, blues, early jazz, gospel, country, and R&B traditions. She also provided backup and harmony vocals on several Linda Ronstadt albums. We love Maria here in The Mermaid Lounge and today we put her in the spotlight.

7:00 p.m. Repeat After Me: Various Artists

We haven’t heard this one in a while. We have two volumes of this one. You’ll hear the second one later in the week. We are also working on volume three for later this month. These are great fun because we get to hear different versions of the same song by different artists. In this one, we have The Heartbreakers covering The Byrds, Tracy Nelson covering Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris covering Simon & Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt covering Little Feat, Three Dog Night covering Laura Nyro, The Beatles covering Barrett Strong, Joan Baez covering The Band…you get the idea.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Steady As She Goes by Hot Tuna NEW!

Released in 2011, this great blues-rock album was Hot Tuna’s first studio album after a string of live albums, and came after Jorma Kaukonen released his own solo album on Red House Records. When the label showed an interest in a new Hot Tuna album, Kaukonen sprang into action. It was recorded at Levon Helm’s studio (The Band), and he used the same approach that the Jefferson Airplane used in producing their albums. Kaukonen contributed six songs to this album. Tom Rush is credited with ushering in the singer-songwriter era. Not only is he a songwriter himself, but he helped put several others on the map by singing their songs, most notably Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Tom Rush has been at it for over sixty years. Today he is 82 and still active. I have fond memories of spending his 79th birthday with him at a concert in a church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, his hometown. Tom Rush is a folk, blues, and New England legend. My favorite song by Tom? Kids These Days.

They have written some of Linda Ronstadt’s most iconic songs, including Heart Like A Wheel and You Tell Me That I’m Falling Down, but their songs have been recorded by many, many other artists as well. They also have had a successful career all their own, and you’ll hear them sing their own songs tonight.

We’re raring to go headlong into another year. It will be our sixth, but we’ve got another whole week left in 2022 and plenty of music to share. We’ve got some special stuff lined up for next week as we celebrate Music Festival Week. Stay tuned!

I remember my first time seeing Warren Zevon live. It was at the Berkelee Performance Center in Boston, and he was two hours late for the show after making us suffer through 52 versions of Year of The Cat courtesy of Al Stewart, the opening act. We were foul of mood. That was, until Zevon got on stage and blew us all away. He was an extraordinary songwriter who broke onto the scene when someone named Linda Ronstadt started singing his songs. And Zevon had a great voice to boot. He may have been a self destructive character, but nobody can ever deny the man’s talents.
