It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Stevie Ray Vaughan, James Cotton Live in New Orleans, and Our Album of The Week, December 21, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! I’m in the retail slave mines early today, but we leave you in good hands with great blues programming and the Open Stream handled by The Music Mermaid.

Our Blues programming today includes James Cotton and Stevie Ray Vaughan

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Stevie Ray Vaughan

I don’t know what I can say about Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn’t already been said. We lost him too soon would be a cliche. Today we feature his music as both a solo artist and with Double Trouble. Perhaps the words of B.B. King say it best. When somebody stated that you have to be black to play the blues, B. B. King replied, “Tell that to Stevie Ray Vaughan.”

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This is the second airing of our Album of The Week, initially released in 1967. The album was then re-released by Columbia Records with Janis Joplin’s name on the cover after they took over Big Brother’s contract (as a result of the band’s huge success at the Monterey Pop Festival the same year).

7:00 p.m. The James Cotton Band Live at Antoine’s Night Club, New Orleans, Louisiana, July 1987 NEW!

To say that I’d have loved to be a fly on the wall for this one is an understatement. New Orleans is one of my favorite places on the planet. I was fortunate enough to visit the city many times on both business and pleasure, and the music was always the big draw for me (the food isn’t too shabby either). Joining Cotton for this performance is Matt “Guitar” Murphy (guitars), Luther Tucker (guitar), Calvin Jones (bass), Willie Smith (drums), and the legendary Pinetop Perkins on piano. James Cotton, of course, was on harp and vocals.

If you’re a bluesologist, this is your day. In between the blues programming, it’s wide Open Stream brought to you by the Lounge’s Music Mermaid who, as you well know if you’re a listener, has impeccable taste. Just pull up a tab and click the button below.

If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Bluesday! Today We Have Our Looooong Blues EP and Our Album of The Week, December 14, 2021

Here’s Tuesday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues: Various Artists

We keep Bluesday simple today with our great multi-artist EP. Simply put, everyone’s in the spotlight today. You’ll hear B. B. King, Delbert McClinton, Eric Clapton, Little Walter, Slim Harpo, Marcia Ball, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, John Lee Hooker, Ry Cooder, The Animals, Susan Tedeschi, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, The Yardbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Allman Brothers Band, Elmore James, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, James Cotton, J.J. Cale, Long John Baldry, Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, Johnny Winter, Tracy Nelson and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Brainwashed by George Harrison

George’s twelfth and final studio album was brought to fruition lovingly by his son, Dhani, and Jeff Lynne, leader of Electric Light Orchestra and George’s mate in The Traveling Wilburys. It was finally released just about a year after his death. It’s a great listen, and some propose it’s his best album. Tune it in.

Another day in paradise, as they say. Listen, a lot of people are working from home these days. In between those obligatory phone calls, you could be listening to some of the greatest music on the planet. You know, like right here. Totally free 24/7, no commercials, and no strings. What else do you want?

We’ve Got Not Just One, But Two, New Tuesday Bluesday Features Today Plus Our Album of The Week, December 7, 2021

Happy Tuesday, Bluesologists! We’ve got some great new blues material for you today, and both features are brand new to The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Delbert McClinton NEW!

One of the great blues-rock and electric bluesmen of his generation is In the Spotlight today. He’s also a multi-instrumentalist and a singer-songwriter. And today we feature the best of a career that has spanned six decades.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Smiley Smile by The Beach Boys

We take a short break in the blues programming to feature a theoretical 19-song album that would have been simply called Smile had it not been abandoned by the Beach Boys. I know. It’s all very complicated. You can learn more about it if you look back on Sunday’s post! Or you can simply click on the sidebar Album of The Week image.

7:00 p.m. Rick Danko & Paul Butterfield Live From The Blue Note, Boulder, Colorado, December 13, 1979 NEW!

This is a great collaboration here between two late greats, Rick Danko of The Band and eminent bluesman Paul Butterfield. We have them ‘live’ together from The Blue Note here.

Every Tuesday is Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge. As such, this is a great day for you to join listeners from around the world. I mean, we’re totally free. Doesn’t cost you a penny. No effort beyond pulling up a tab and tuning in. No commercials. And no bullshit.

It’s a Full-Day Tuesday Bluesday Here Today, Including a Brand New Chicago Blues Playlist, November 23, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a full day Tuesday Bluesday this week because our Album of The Week is blues too! Does it get any better than that?

There’s no place like Chicago and The Blues!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Best of Chicago Blues: Various Artists NEW!

There’s nothing like Chicago and the blues, that’s for sure. I made several trips out to the Windy City during a previous lifetime and made sure to frequent the blues clubs every time. Today you’ll hear Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Howlin’ Wolf, Magic Slim, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson and more!

This one is already crying out for update and extension. We’ll get there, but we kick off this playlist with nearly three hours of blues.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Greatest Hits by Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac

This is the second airing of our AOW, and it’s a great one. As I’ve said before, greatest hits collections do not often appear on our list (there are always exceptions), but his one belongs here. Not many people realize that Peter Green is a founding member of Fleetwood Mac, and that the Mac started out as a British blues-rock band.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

I remember my first trip to the House of Blues in New Orleans years ago and the painting of Taj Mahal on the box office wall. I’ve been hooked ever since. Taj Mahal, also known as Henry St. Claire Fredericks, Jr., is a blues musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays banjo, guitar, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. He often gives a little world music flavor to the blues. You’ll love him if you haven’t heard him before.

We’re waiting on y’all. Germany, Italy, France, Russian Federation, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain…come on down and enjoy the tunes. Tuesday Bluesday is definitely a good day.

Cale, Koko Taylor, Long John Baldry, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Tracy Nelson, Marcia Ball, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Susan Tedeschi, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul by Otis Redding

Yes, folks. It’s exactly what it says it is. Redding’s fifth studio album would also be his final studio album. It is a collection of soul favorites mixed in with Redding’s own songs.

On This Fine Tuesday Bluesday We Have Tracy Nelson In the Spotlight, Our Album of The Week, and Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band Later, November 9, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! Here we are on another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got some great stuff on tap for today as you can see.

Janis with the Kozmic Blues Band circa 1969

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

Although many have not heard of Tracy Nelson, she’s been around for quite some time. Since her career started, she has recorded more than 20 albums. Her first album, Deep Are The Roots, was an acoustic blues album recorded in Chicago and released in 1965. While in Chicago she met and learned from many blues icons, including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Otis Spann. She also fronted a band called Mother Earth which shared the Fillmore concert stage with The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Her signature song, Down So Low, was written and recorded by Nelson around the Mother Earth time, but has also been covered by Linda Ronstadt, Maria Mudaur, Ellen McIlwaine, and Etta James. Tune this woman in.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Gilded Palace of Sin by The Flying Burrito Brothers

Our second airing of this breakthrough country-rock album is here. Get it while it’s hot.

7:00 p.m. Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands, April 1, 1969

It’s an all-girl Tuesday Bluesday as we bring you a live bootleg performance of Janis with The Kozmic Blues Band live from The Netherlands. I was multi-tasking as I wrote today’s blog entry and I came across this article about Janis Joplin. I found it quite perceptive and thought I’d share it with you.

Well, gang, what can I say? We’re free. Totally. No hidden shit. Nothing that we sneak in. We don’t ask for a “subscription” or a credit card to listen. We don’t flood the airwaves with commercial advertising. And we don’t offer you DJ’s who talk too much. All we have to offer is music. Isn’t that enough?

It’s Tuesday Bluesday Here in The Mermaid Lounge With Jimmy Reed, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, and Dusty Springfield, November 2, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a fine line-up today, but it does involve some explaining! Hey, this is why we write this blog every morning, come hell or high water (as my mother would say).

John Mayall, The Godfather of British Blues

Here’s today’s line-up:

Remember, kids, the devil is in the details!

11:00 a.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Live in 1967

These great archival recordings feature one of the best Bluesbreakers line-up ever, with John Mayall (vocal, keyboards, harmonica), Peter Green (lead guitar), John McVie (bass) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). This iteration of The Bluesbreakers were only together for about three months, but one die-hard fan managed to sneak a reel-to-reel recorder into five London venues to capture this music history. While these one-track files have been engineered a bit, please keep in mind that this is 1967 and, although a bit rough, this is genuine music history.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

Our second airing of this great Album of The Week choice. Although this album sold poorly when released, it is recognized by the critics as one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jimmy Reed NEW!

Jimmy Reed is one of the most underrated bluesmen of his generation, but one thing is for certain: His particular style of electric blues was popular with both blues and non-blues audiences. His hits Honest I Do (1957), Baby What You Want Me To Do (1960), Big Boss Man (1961) and Bright Lights, Big City (1961) made it to both Billboards rhythm & blues and Hot 100 Singles charts. This Spotlight feature is taken from the Live at Carnegie Hall album set, which is basically a studio recreation of a past live concert, along with some of his greatest hits. We thought this would make a great way to introduce some folks to a guy who may have fallen through their blues cracks.

Come on, blues lovers! This is your day here in The Mermaid Lounge, and you would be greatly remiss in allowing this one to pass you by. Join your friends from Netherlands, Russian Federation, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Texas (yes, Texas), the Faroe Islands and points beyond this morning. What are you waiting for?

We Give You Roomful of Blues and The Allman Brothers Band for This Windy and Rainy Tuesday Bluesday, October 26, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! Another Tuesday Bluesday has rolled around and this time we’ve got Roomful of Blues In the Spotight and The Allman Brothers live at The Beacon wrapped around our Album of The Week.

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: Roomful of Blues

I remember going to see these guys in various venues around Cambridge, Massachusetts when I was just a young’un. This blues and swing revival band has been at this for five decades. They are no stranger to the blues circuit. If you haven’t paid much attention to them, this would be a good time.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Elton John by Elton John

This is our second airing of this great Elton John album, his debut in the U.S. but his second studio album outside this country. Two of my absolute favorite Elton John songs appear on this album, Take Me To The Pilot and Your Song. There are many singers and bands whose early music I prefer to their material in later years. Elton John is one of them.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Play All Night: Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York (1992)

This is a great collection of live songs performed by The Brothers during their residency at The Beacon during 1992. Some “live” Allman Brothers is a great way to close out the Tuesday Bluesday programming.

Why not join us today? There is absolutely no financial commitment required on your part, no forms to fill out, and no personal information asked for. It’s as simple as pulling up a tab and clicking on the link below:

It’s Tuesday Bluesday Again and We’ve Got Our ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues’ EP Along With Our Petty Album of The Week, October 19, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got our blues EP going today, bringing you five hours of multi-artist blues and blues-rock.

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues: Various Artists

It’s back for a return engagement. Our big, bad blues EP is here with more than five hours of uninterrupted blues from B. B. King, Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt, Little Walter, Slim Harpo, John Lee Hooker, The Animals, The Allman Brothers Band, The Yardbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Robert Cray Band, Johnny Winter, The Rolling Stones, Long John Baldry, Foghat, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, J. J. Cale, Koko Taylor, Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters, Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Buddy Guy, Ry Cooder, James Cotton, and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty

We’re back with our second airing of this week’s Album of The Week, Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty. This was the first of three great Tom Petty solo albums (although most of the Heartbreakers contributed mightily).

Tuesday Bluesday is always a great intro to our station. This is the perfect day with our signature blues extended playlist. You cannot go wrong, particularly since there are no subscription requirements or fees, and we do not ask for your personal information. Ever.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday and We Have a Heartbreakers’ Blues Playlist, Our AOW, and Robert Cray with Stevie Ray Vaughan, October 12, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We’ve got some great stuff today for Tuesday Bluesday as we return to celebrating Tom Petty Month.

We’ve got some great guitar blues for y’all today with Mike Campbell, Robert Cray, and Stevie Ray Vaughan on tap!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

We continue on with Tom Petty features during Tom Petty Month. Tom Petty always envisioned The Heartbreakers sitting around on chairs playing the blues in their old age. Life (and death) has a way of getting in the way of things, but the band made some great blues songs while they were together. We’ve got them here today.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon

Our second airing of this great album that doesn’t have a bad song on it. Forget the hits, although they were great enough. The album also has Accidentally Like a Martyr, Nighttime in the Switching Yard, and my favorite, Lawyers, Guns and Money.

7:00 p.m. The Robert Cray Band with Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at Club Redux, Dallas, TX, January 21, 1987

Two great bluesmen here for your listening pleasure. What more could you ask for?

Another day of music brought to you by nobody of commercial importance. We don’t have sponsors. We don’t accept advertising. We just play music all day and all night without any interruption. You ought to give it a shot. It’ll change your view of radio.
