It’s Tuesday Bluesday and We’re Heading Down to Louisiana; We’ve Also Got Our Album of The Week, October 5, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We’re heading down to Louisiana today for some blues, and we bring the second airing of our Album of The Week by Valerie Carter.

Louisiana Blues gives us both the jazzy New Orleans-style blues and the swampy blues encompassing the Cajun/Zydeco influence

There’s nothing like the Louisiana blues. You’ll hear Clarence Frogman Henry, Little Walter, Bobby Charles, Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Slim Harpo, Warren Storm, and Louisiana Red in this set. We have part two this evening.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Just A Stones Throw Away by Valerie Carter

We think this week’s Album of The Week fits in just fine on this Tuesday Bluesday because Valerie Carter’s first solo album is just a little bit of everything, including just a bit bluesy. She’s got the perfect voice for it.

7:00 p.m. The Best of Louisiana Blues, Volume Two: Various Artists

You’ll hear more of Clarence Frogman Henry, Slim Harpo, and Muddy Waters in our second set, but you’ll also hear Smiley Lewis, The Big Bopper, Earl King, Cookie & The Cupcakes, Rod Bernard, Frankie Ford, Joe Jones, and Big Boy Myles.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday with Eric Clapton & Friends, Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live” and Our Album of The Week, September 28, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a great blues line-up today sandwiched around our latest Album of The Week.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Eric Clapton & Friends: Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, & Joe Cocker, Live at Royal Albert Hall, UK, September 20, 1983

Back in 1983, a bunch of musicians got together to play a benefit concert at Royal Albert Hall to raise money for multiple sclerosis. The event was organized by Ronnie Lane of the band Faces, who was a victim of the disease himself. The result was a great set of 18 songs of straight-up blues and blues-rock numbers. Even better, Clapton, Page and Beck were all once lead guitarists for The Yardbirds, but this was the first time they’d ever been on stage together. Many other great musicians were also involved in this benefit. You can read more about it here.

Back for the second airing of this great album from the world’s premier supergroup. You can learn how the Wilburys came to be right here.

7:00 p.m. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Live at The Bluebird Lounge, Ft. Worth, TX, September 30, 1979

There’s not much more you can say about Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn’t already been said. He was on the road continually during 1978 and 1979, and one stop was The Bluebird Lounge. It is believed that the owner of the place, Robert “Bluebird” Ealey was sitting in on guitar and vocals.

Hell, it’s Tuesday Bluesday here in the lounge. Before you know it, we’ll be coming up on Blues Week here (sometime during the winter when we need it most). We’re out there sourcing some new stuff now. This is a great time to acclimate yourself to our station.

A collection of live songs from various locations from the master of the blues harmonica, James Cotton, and his great band: Charles Calmese (Bass), Kenny Johnson (Drums), Mike “Captain Z” Zaitchik (Keyboards), Matt “Guitar” Murphy (Lead Guitar), and George T. Gregory (Saxophone). This is widely considered the best of Cotton’s live recordings.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons

We take a break and delve into country-rock here with the second airing of Grievous Angel.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Marcia Ball NEW!

This seemed like the perfect time to make this long-awaited spotlight happen, and I promise it will be updated. We are still in the process of adding Marcia Ball’s music to our rotation. Marcia Ball is a kick-ass blues singer and a piano master. She has been around for a while, but doesn’t get the attention she so richly deserves. Born and raised in Louisiana, her style has been described as “where Texas stomp rock and Louisiana swamp blues meet.” You’re going to like her if you don’t already know her.

A great collection of live Bluesbreakers songs recorded live at the BBC between 1965 and 1967, with the great John Mayall at the helm. It also includes two previously unreleased songs from the Old Grey Whistle Test performances, So Much To Do and Taxman Blues.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell

The second airing of one of the greatest recorded albums in popular music history by the great Joni Mitchell, written and recorded during a very turbulent time in her personal life.

7:00 p.m. Muddy Waters: The Johnny Winter Sessions (1976-1981)

Johnny Winter assembled a great backing band for Muddy Waters — a giant of the Chicago blues genre — during these recording sessions, including Pinetop Perkins on keyboards and James Cotton on harp. All the great blues standards are here, Mannish Boy, Baby Please Don’t Go, Good Morning Little School Girl, and even Champagne and Reefer.

The second airing of this great album. We inject a bit of good old rock n’ roll (with a hint of jazz, of course) in the middle of all those blues.

Generations of guitar-loving kids are still discovering the magic of this guy. He has been described as a man of simple taste with impeccable style. We cover his music from both his time with Double Trouble and as a solo artist.

It was for one night only, and was the one and only time that Mick Jagger and his boys ever played with the iconic bluesman Muddy Waters. It’s one for the books.

Tuesday Bluesday Brings You Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton & B.B. King, and Our AOW, August 3, 2021

Indeed, the rumors are true: The original Fleetwood Mac wasn’t a pop-rock band. That happened with the departure of Peter Green and the addition of Buckingham/Nicks. The original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, led by Peter Green. We have the original band live from The Warehouse in New Orleans, recorded over a two-day period.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne

The second airing of this week’s Album of The Week, which just happens to be a brand new album by singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. He has remained true to himself over five decades in the music business. His message remains the same, and he delivers it with the same passion as he always has, but this time with the perspective that time is running out. That’s why we love him here.

7:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & B.B. King: Riding With The King

Two blues masters here, and the results are totally pleasing to the ears. This is actually what we should call ‘Not Our Album of The Week’ as it was their first collaboration, released in 2000. It won the Grammy for the Best Traditional Blues Album, reached number one on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums, and was certified multi-platinum in the U.S.

A great blues band in a one of those great old (and now defunct) Boston music venues. This one puts the perfect finishing touch on today’s Tuesday Bluesday programming.
