We Kick Off International Women’s Week With Our ‘The Female Species’ EP, and Bonnie Raitt Owns Our Album of The Week, Sunday, March 6, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! You all know we’re focused on giving women a greater broadcast voice in music, and what better way to do that than celebrating International Women’s Week! We’ve got a great line-up for you today, and great plans for the week.

We kick off International Women’s Week today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Home Plate by Bonnie Raitt NEW!

Home Plate, released in 1975, was Bonnie Raitt’s fifth studio album. Although she’s mostly described as a blues singer, Bonnie Raitt has managed to expand that repertoire over the years while maintaining her blues roots. And did we mention she plays that Fender Stratocaster like she was born with it in her hands? She is one of the finest slide guitarists on the planet. I loved Bonnie Raitt before this album. After Home Plate was released, it became adoration.

3:00 p.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

This will be a week to celebrate the women of music, but we start with songs that celebrate women, ladies, girls in the title, lyrics or both. Women have long been the subject of much joy and heartache in the music world, and we’ll give it to you here. You’ll hear from Talking Heads, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jackson Browne, The Boogaloo Swamis, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Electric Light Orchestra, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Temptations, and more!

We Close Out The Month With Music Banned On The Airwaves, The Animals, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live, Monday, February 28, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! February certainly is a short month, but we’re closing it out in style with some excellent programming, including a brand new playlists of songs banned ’round the world!

Hard to believe this song was banned, but that’s what happens when you “Imagine there’s no heaven.”

Here’s your musical programming for today:

11:00 a.m. Banned On The Airwaves: Various Artists NEW!

This certainly isn’t an EP, but it was fun to put together. Thanks to my compadre Dave Denton for the idea! These are songs that have been banned from different locations around the world, not just here in America. Some of them defy logic, I must say. For example, My Generation by The Who was banned by the BBC because they felt it was disparaging to people who stutter. Sailing by Rod Stewart was banned because of the war in the Falkland Islands (incidentally, this was not the only nautical song banned at this time). God Only Knows by the Beach Boys was banned because, well, God just wasn’t used in rock n’ roll music. This Note’s For You by Neil Young was banned because it was anti-capitalist.

In addition to these guys, you’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (yes, it’s true), The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Shirelles, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, and more. 3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Animals

The Animals were certainly one hell of a band. Steeped in R & B, the blues and rock, they were formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early sixties, then moved to London when they began to gain traction. Eric Burdon was the perfect lead vocalist for this band.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The PPL Center, Allentown, PA, September 16, 2014

Speaking of great bands, we give you The Heartbreakers live on the Hypnotic Eye tour. It’s hard to believe that a band can produce such brilliant material over a forty-year span, but this album proved to be one of The Heartbreakers’ finest ever. Sadly, this would also be their final album ever as Tom Petty would prematurely pass into the great wide open a week after their 40th Anniversary Tour in 2017. Nevertheless, their music lives on eternally here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Come on, folks. Music makes nearly all things tolerable. The only exception would be the GOP, but I digress and we don’t want to ruin the mood here. Hey, we’re anti-capitalist too. After the 60’s the music of the 70’s was a bit of a letdown. (It only got worse in subsequent decades, by the way.) But Steely Dan was one of those bands who was an oasis in the middle of a desert. Love this band and the rap that they can’t reproduce their sound ‘live’ on stage was bullshit, by the way. That was not my experience when I saw them. Today we (belatedly) celebrate Walter Becker’s birthday by putting Steely Dan In the Spotlight.

I’d say we’re celebrating Black History Month, but every month is Black History Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. If it weren’t for black music, there would be no rock n’ roll. And no. Elvis never said he invented rock n’ roll. He deferred to his black counterparts on that issue. At Midweek, It’s Dan Fogelberg In the Spotlight, An Afternoon Trifecta-Fest, and The Beatles This Evening, Wednesday, November 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again at midweek. It’s Truck Day at the old slave shack, but I certainly have you covered musically in my absence. The Music Mermaid will see that everything is carried out to the letter.

The Beatles touched down in the U.S. on February 7, 1964, my tenth birthday. It changed everything.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Dan Fogelberg

This guy’s name doesn’t always roll off people’s tongue, but it should. Fogelberg was a singer, songwriter, musician, and multi-instrumentalist who, for me, provided an oasis in the dry desert of the eighties music scene (absolutely not my favorite generation of music), along with a few others, most notably Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. People can debate an artist’s “best” album all day and night because that decision is subjective and personal. For me Souvenirs was not only his best album, but one of the best albums ever put on vinyl.

In fact, it changed everything in the house because my sisters became fans pretty quickly as well. This is the other half of our House Band duo, and over the next few days we’ll be playing their stuff in chronological order.

Come on, people. Join your friends. Wednesday always seems to be fairly active early in the morning: Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Russian Federation, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and the UK are on so far. These people know good music when they hear it.

If It’s Monday, It Must be Mudcrutch, And We Have Our Great EP ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ To Start Things Off, October 4, 2021

Good Morning, Petty Fans! We’re back on the train today with Mudcrutch Monday Madness! But that comes up later on. We kick it all off with our great new EP about water.

This was one of those EP’s that was so much fun to do it just kept going. It wound up being just over four hours of great songs with references to water in either the title, the lyrics, or both. 7:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness! The Full Catalogue

This playlist includes all of Mudcrutch, including the definitive live version of Hungry No More (a kickass song) recorded live at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016. It also includes the original version of Don’t Do Me Like That, which was originally a Mudcrutch song. This was the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with when he made his move to L.A. to make music. It was the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. And the rest, as they say, is history. EXCEPT, Tom Petty decided to bring Mudcrutch back to life in 2008 with its original members, including Tom Leadon on guitar (whose brother, Bernie, played with the Eagles) and Randall Marsh, his friend from Gainesville, on drums. As a member of Mudcrutch, Tom Petty was the bass player. Mudcrutch finally became a success in their own right. Their sound is awesome, and it’s different than The Hearbreakers even though the original Mudcrutch also had Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. If you’re a true Petty fan, then you already know Mudcrutch. If you’re just a lover of The Heartbreakers’ hits and you’re not a deep digger, this is your opportunity.

It’s Petty month here in The Mermaid Lounge. We won’t be obnoxious about it, but we will be playing more Tom Petty than usual, and that is always a good thing. We remain all about the music. It didn’t take long for The Band to become one of my favorites, and they have remained in my top three bands of all time today. They started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band but became one of the most important and influential bands in popular music history. This is also a tip of the hat to the nationally-syndicated King Biscuit Flower Hour which brought some of the best bands in history into our living rooms.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell

This is our second-to-last airing of one of the pivotal albums in popular music, which turned fifty in June of this year. The final airing will be on Saturday. On Sunday when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you, so get Blue in while you can!

I hear a lot of bullshit disparaging remarks out there about Ringo’s drumming. Talk is cheap. His peers in the drumming world don’t share that attitude. In fact, Ringo is one of the most respected drummers on the planet, and The Beatles went to great lengths to lure him away from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.
