It’s Sunday Funday Here in The Mermaid Lounge With ‘Ladies Day Out’ and “Blues From Laurel Canyon” As Our Album of The Week, June 20, 2021

Good Morning, and Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. It’s time once again for our ‘Ladies Day Out’ extended playlist, and we’ve got a great new Album of The Week starting today.

Ladies Day Out begins at 3:00 p.m. and runs for five uninterrupted hours.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Blues From Laurel Canyon by John Mayall NEW!

Released in November 1968 after John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers disbanded, this album is yet another piece of Laurel Canyon music history. John Mayall wrote all the songs and plays harmonica, organ and guitar on the album. He is joined by a young Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), and Stephen Thompson (bass). Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac (a blues band at its birth) plays guitar on one of the songs as well. There’s nothing like some British blues to kick-start your day.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of popular music still get the short end of the stick on the airwaves. Some of these radio stations think that Joan Jett and Blondie are the only women who ever made rock n’ roll. Pioneers like Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, and others get absolutely no appreciable playtime that I can find anywhere, not even on the so-called “classic rock” channels.

We aim to change that here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We do not broadcast like traditional radio because we can’t afford to compete with those entities. We are an Internet radio station. But we have made a commitment to showcasing the women of rock n’ roll, soul, folk, blues, even cajun-zydeco (sorry, no rap here) in the hope that in some small way we can pay them respect. Our homage to the women who make music begins at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Tune us in. It’s hot as the blazes out there where I am today. But it’s nice and cool here in The Mermaid Lounge. The only thing hot in here is the music. And it runs 24/7 free of charge to everyone.

We’ve got it all today in celebration of Macca’s birthday. McCartney as a founding member of The Beatles, as the leader of Wings, and as a solo artist. We’re Hearing Those ‘Echoes From the Canyon’ Updated Playlist, and A Second Airing of Our Album of The Week, Thursday, June 17, 2021

Good Morning, Music Historians everywhere! Today we have an airing of our newly-expanded Echoes From The Canyon playlist (and it will go through another update soon) for your listening pleasure.

Laurel Canyon was the scene for the musical revolution of the 60’s and 70’s.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists UPDATED!

There’s no question that Laurel Canyon was the epicenter of the musical revolution of the 60’s and 70’s. Jakob Dylan and Tom Petty knew it. The both drew musical inspiration from those bands.

All of these great musicians lived within walking distance of each other. Mama Cass invited people over to jam and have lunch (she also never cleaned her house), Jackson Browne lived in a basement under Don Henley, Graham Nash wrote Our House in a tiny house in Laurel, everyone loved partying with The Monkees, and John Mayall’s first album after the Bluesbreakers broke up was Blues From Laurel Canyon.

You’ll hear all of the above and many more in our newly updated playlist (which will also go through another update soon, by the way). Enjoy.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: In the Midnight Hour & Other Hits by Wilson Pickett

We’re winding down with this week’s selection. The final airing of this great album will be on Saturday.

Please, allow me to sound like a broken record: This would be an awesome day to tune us in. Believe me. You have no idea what you’re missing until you give us a shot. We’re free 24/7, accept absolutely no advertising, charge you not a dime and never ask for your personal information. All you need is a free browser tab.

For more than half a century, B.B. King defined the blues for a global audience. This singer, songwriter and record producer was a guitar innovator, whose solos used a combination of fluid string bending, shimmering vibrato, and and staccato picking. Today, we put him in the spotlight.

The wicked one is back today for a second airing. Wilson Pickett was a big part of defining American soul music, placing 50 songs on the charts during his career. Some of the best are here today.

We’re Under the Influence today at 11:00 a.m.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists EXPANDED!

Drugs, booze, you name it. We’ve all done it in our lifetime, and plenty of musicians and bands have written songs about it. We’ve got them here today in our expanded and updated playlist. Don’t be fooled into thinking Got To Get You Into My Life is about a woman and doesn’t belong here. McCartney himself admitted that he wrote it about his love for weed.

In addition to the Beatles, you’ll hear The Velvet Underground, Eric Clapton, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Donovan, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, and many more.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur is a folk and blues singer who began her career in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village as part of the folk music revival of the early sixties. She has continued to roll on singing not only folk and blues, but jazz, country, pop, and R & B. She’s also loaned her pipes to the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, and is one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Trifectas R’Us

We’re bringing back the trifectas today. It has been a while. We’ve got them scheduled as follows for your listening pleasure:

10:00 a.m. Aretha Franklin

2:30 p.m. Steve Winwood

6:00 p.m. Canned Heat

8:00 p.m. The Rascals

We hope you’ll tune us in today. We highly encourage this because we know we play the best damned music on the planet for free (no small print), non-stop 24/7. Just do it.

Good Morning, Music Lovers across the universe! We’re here in The Mermaid Lounge on this lovely day, and it’s time for another visit from our friends from across the pond, as they say. Wilson Pickett will also give us our Album of The Week.

Here’s your Sunday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: In the Midnight Hour & Other Hits by Wilson Pickett NEW!

They don’t call him “Wicked” Wilson Pickett for nothing. Wilson Pickett was a major player in establishing the genre of American soul music, with more than 50 songs making the R & B charts. And many of those songs crossed over into the Billboard Hot 100. It’s about time he’s recognized in this venue.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming! Various Artists

It’s time once again for us to pay respects to the British Invasion (the musical one), and to those bands who followed in their footsteps. This was one of our very first long players here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

You’ll hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Lulu, Petula Clark, The Dave Clark Five, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Them, The Who, The Searchers, Queen, The Hollies, Cream, Herman’s Hermits, Dusty Springfield, and more. This is five hours of uninterrupted music!

Once again, we ask nothing except that you tune us in by clicking the link below. We don’t ask for a “subscription” or acredit card or any personal information. Nada. We do not run advertising (only a station I.D. by yours truly here and there), and we don’t employ chatty disc jockeys who think they’re stand-up comedians. Give us a shot.
