8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Tom Rush NEW!

Tom Rush is credited with ushering in the singer-songwriter era. Not only is he a songwriter himself, but he helped put several others on the map by singing their songs, most notably Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Tom Rush has been at it for over sixty years. Today he is 82 and still active. I have fond memories of spending his 79th birthday with him at a concert in a church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, his hometown. Tom Rush is a folk, blues, and New England legend. My favorite song by Tom? Kids These Days.

We bid a very fond farewell to Nina Simone as our featured singer-songwriter for this week. Tomorrow we’ll introduce a new artist here but, in the meantime, don’t miss her final turn at the mike.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Steve Winwood

Tonight we put Steve Winwood In the Spotlight and, yes, he will eventually get his turn as our singer-songwriter. Another Mermaid Lounge favorite here. You’ll hear his music from his days with Traffic, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group and his solo career tonight.

A short-lived but amazing band consisting of Art Blakey, Dr. John and David “Fathead” Newman released this great album that’s a little jazz, a little blues and a lot of funk. We’re winding down on this one. The last airing will be on Saturday. As they say in the restaurant business, get it while it’s hot.

Koko Taylor is often called The Queen of The Blues, and rightly so. Her potent singing style encompassed Chicago Blues, electric blues, soul blues and straight-up R & B. We’ve got her In the Spotlight tonight.

Dylan was just about 24 years old when he played the Royal Albert Hall in London. We have that performance here to kick off our programming today.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Valerie Carter

Valerie Carter began her singing career in coffeehouses as a teen, then became part of a trio called Howdy Moon. The band released one album, now fairly obscure. However, she wrote the song Cook With Honey, which became a hit for Judy Collins later and managed to meet Lowell George of Little Feat, who produced her next album and became her mentor until his death. He introduced her to Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt and so it began. Valerie Carter has an amazing voice and that girl can sing. Give a listen as we continue to celebrate Women’s (Musical) History Month.

Speaking of Little Feat, we’re back in London tonight for their performance at The Rainbow Room. It’s a good one. Don’t miss it!

Good morning, musicologists! We love it when musicians refuse to be “defined” and Dr. John is one of those guys. Today we have a brand new album featuring Dr. John and two of his friends, along with our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Bluesiana Triangle by Art Blakey, Dr. John and David “Fathead” Newman NEW!

I stumbled upon this album several years ago because of my obsession with Dr. John, but it’s conception was really Art Blakey, an American jazz drummer. In addition to Dr. John on piano, guitar and vocals, it features David “Fathead” Newman, a jazz and rhythm & blues saxophonist, who is best known for his work with Ray Charles in the 50’s and early 60’s. The album is a collection of great jazz, blues and funk music that has become one of my favorites.

3:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’re back with our EP about night time (it’s the right time, according to the J. Geils Band). In addition to them, you’ll hear Warren Zevon, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, The Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, The Doors, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens and more!

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Nina Simone NEW!

Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist whose musical style encompassed a variety of styles including classical, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm & blues and pop. Born into poverty, she started playing piano at the age of three or four, and initially aspired to be a concert pianist. When she was 12, she played piano at her local church. When her parents took seats at the front, they were asked to move to the back of the church to make room for white people. She refused to play until they were moved back to the front. She used her talent to advance civil rights throughout her career. You can read more about Nina Simone here.
