We start the morning with songs about the night from Warren Zevon, The J. 4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Dan Fogelberg

Dan Fogelberg was one of those guys who kind of fell through the cracks, and I have absolutely no idea why. A great singer and songwriter who can boast one of the absolute best albums ever made at any time with Souvenirs.

8:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell & James Taylor Live at The Paris Club, London, UK, October 29, 1970

Yes, of course they were ‘a thing’ at the time, but it’s a great concert nevertheless.

One more early morning shift and I’m a closer for a couple of days. But don’t you worry. The Music Mermaid shifts into control to make sure we get this done. The button is below.

It’s Monday, Monday with James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ on October 21, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! It’s a Laurel Canyon kind of day here in The Mermaid Lounge as we have our long-running EP and two music icons who spent time with their musical counterparts in Laurel Canyon, the proving ground of country-rock..

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

10:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of James Taylor

We start out with James Taylor, a music icon who has sold more than 100 million records over his long career. He truly belongs In The Spotlight.

1:00 p.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

Many artists passed through the canyon over two decades, where rock was fused with country and became the first real challenge on the charts to the British Invasion music. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. We’re here and we’re totally free. We don’t run commercial advertising. And we’re not in this for a profit. We’re all about the music. The button is below.

On Friday The B’s Have It: The Beatles, The Band and Bonnie, October 18, 2024

Good morning, music lovers we’re at Friday. We’re on the cusp of the weekend, and The B’s are in The Lounge today taking care of business.

Here’s your Friday lineup:

During the course of putting together our newest EP of three-part harmonies, it became clear just how much the Beatles employed it during their time. Hence we have a new Beatles playlist to enjoy! Can you pick your favorite? Someone asked me and I have yet to answer.

4:00 p.m. The Band Live at The Academy of Music, New York, NY, December 28-31, 1971

Surely one of the most incredible bands ever to grace the music world. The Band went from being Dylan’s back-up band to being one of the most influential acts in rock music history. Why were they called simply ‘The Band’? Because that’s what everyone referred to them as when they were backing Dylan. It stuck.

8:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt Live at The Rainbow Room, Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 1972

We close out the programming portion of our day with early Bonnie Raitt at Sigma Sound in Philly, hanging out and singing in The Rainbow Room.

Yeah, I’m not going to repeat all of the reasons why you should be tuning us in. I’m just going to tell you the button is below. I’ll remind you again tomorrow.

We have two concerts from the famed 1997 Fillmore concerts, which every member of The Heartbreakers considers the best of times on stage.Today’s collection is the one from the boxed set released a couple of years ago. Tom himself felt the band was at its most creative, and it is apparent as this collection covers 20 magnificent nights of shows where the playlist changed every single time out. That is unheard of. Of particular note are the number of “covers” from their rock and roll heroes that the band performs. We here in The Mermaid Lounge not only reveres The Heartbreakers as the best rock n’ roll band on the planet, but also the best cover band.

Enjoy the trip. The Music Mermaid will be here manning the controls all day and, as usual, at no cost and with absolutely no commercial interruption. The big ass button is below.

Here’s your musical mojo:

9:00 a.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

This one is songs about women, not necessarily by women (although some most definitely are). You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, The Temptations and more!

This afternoon we honor Kris Kristofferson’s musical legacy with a concert at Philharmonic Hall. He even brings along a few friends, like Willie Nelson, Rita Coolidge and Larry Gatlin.

We’ve got Volume Two this evening, with Dave Mason, Grin, Gene Clark, Jimmy Webb, Rick Nelson, David Crosby, Tim Buckley, Frank Zappa, Steppenwolf, Glen Campbell, Hoyt Axton, The Turtles, Stephen Stills, Poco and more!

Sunday is Folk Day With Our Big EP in Between Early Live Dylan and a Gordon Lightfoot ‘Spotlight’, September 29, 2024

Good morning, folk music lovers! We’ve got some good stuff today, with our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP sandwiched between early live Dylan and a Gordon Lightfoot Spotlight feature!

Here’s your Sunday Folk-day lineup:

I was eight years old when Bob Dylan performed at the Finjan Club. I actually discovered The Beatles first. Dylan came later, but the connection was instant. This is very early Dylan, but some call it one of his most passionate performances. It includes a few rarely-heard Dylan originals, including The Death of Emmet Till.

1:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We’ve got our big folk EP this afternoon where you will hear Bob Dylan along with John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Joni Mitchell, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Phil Ochs, Harry Chapin, Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, The Carter Family and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Gordon Lightfoot

This guy is a giant of folk, folk-rock and country, and who is also rightfully credited with bridging the gap between folk and pop and defining the folk-pop sound of the seventies. He has been called the greatest Canadian songwriter, although I’m sure Joni Mitchell and Neil Young fans would have something to say about that. There’s plenty of room for all of them, and he is certainly on that list.

Kids, it’s Sunday and that is a day of rest by definition, is it not? Personally, I think retail business establishments should be closed on Sundays. One day will not kill anyone. But I digress. If you’re lucky enough to not have to work a retail Sunday, tune us in. The Magic Button is below.

Spend the Day With America, Rickie Lee Jones and Volume Two of Our ‘Sixties Rotation’ on Saturday, September 28, 2024

Good morning, sunshines! Here we are again functioning as weekenders and we’ve got a great lineup for you today that starts with some new music (relatively speaking; all of our music is pretty old music) and wraps up with a trip in the Wayback Machine!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

There are just some bands you are drawn to. This is one of those bands, in fact. I became an early adopter with A Horse With No Name. Over the years, they have made a lot of great music, much of which is buried on their albums. That’s the beauty of America. They were also innovative enough to catch the eye of a guy named George Martin.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Rickie Lee Jones

The Spotlight is on Rickie Lee Jones, another female artists who is difficult to box into a style of music. Over her five-decade career she has recorded in various musical styles, including rock, R&B, pop, soul, and jazz.

6:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We close out the evening on Sixties music from The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimmy Cliff, The Velvet Underground, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, The Four Tops, CSNY, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, The Doors, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and more!

Whew. That’s quite a lineup. And it’s all free. No lie. Here’s the other thing: We’re on 24/7; not just when we have schedule programs. We’ve got more than 27,000 songs to share with you. The button is below.

If It’s Tuesday, It’s Bluesday With Our Big, Bad Blues EP, a Brand New John Lee Hooker Spotlight Feature and The B. B. King Blues Band, September 24, 2024

Good morning, bluesologists and welcome to another Tuesday Bluesday. Today we’ve got a new Spotlight featuring John Lee Hooker!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues: Various Artists

Our big, bad, all-encompassing blues EP with Robert Johnson, Delbert McClinton, B. B. King, Little Walter, Slim Harpo, Ry Cooder, Canned Heat, John Lee Hooker, The Animals, Albert King, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, The Yardbirds, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, Bobby “Blue” Bland, The Allman Brothers Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Elmore James, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Robert Cray Band, J. J. Cale, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, James Cotton, Koko Taylor, Marcia Ball, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Susan Tedeschi, Roomful of Blues, Howlin’ Wolf and more!

This man is a true blues legend. The son of a sharecropper, he became famous for playing an electric-guitar style adaptation of the Delta blues that he developed while in Detroit. You can read more about John Lee Hooker and his blues innovations here.

8:00 p.m. The B. B. King Blues Band Live at The North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, Netherlands, October 7, 1987

We close out Tuesday Bluesday with some live B. B. King, always a good way to bring it to a close.
