We love this band here in The Mermaid Lounge, and this particular live recording is new to us here. Gram Parsons didn’t live long enough to really reach his potential, but we believe it was limitless and that he left us a great musical legacy.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Poneys & Friends, Volume III FINAL AIRING!

We say farewell to this album after today’s airing, the final Stone Poneys album before Linda Ronstadt launches into her meteoric career and her decade reign as the Queen of Rock. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album for you.

Yes, they were the Stax Records house band, but they were so much more than that. They were a force in the music world and, once you pay attention to them, it’s easy to see why Tom Petty and his bandmates were so smitten with them.

From the blues to a bit of folk interlude here. The final album from Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys was released in 1968. The following year, she would launch her solo career.

Louisiana has contributed mightily to the history of blues music with Dr. John, Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton, Slim Harpo, Snooks Eaglin, Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Professor Longhair, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and many more. You can hear them here this evening.

Jesse Winchester remains one of the most underrated singer-songwriters of his generation, and today we have the final airing of his album, Nothing But A Breeze. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a new Album of The Week.

6:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Laura Nyro

Laura Nyro is another of those singer-songwriters who sometimes flies under the radar. She has written songs that have put many people on the charts. But there’s nothing like hearing Laura Nyro sing her own compositions. You can do that here today.

11:00 a.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, March 4, 1988 NEW!

This great band was originally intended as an acoustic spinoff from the Jefferson Airplane, but it soon became the full-time project of its founders, Jack Cassady and Jorma Kaukonen. They became a popular road band in the seventies, and eventually mixed in some electric. One of the best in our book.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Dusty Springfield

Rolling Stone has called Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, also known as Dusty Springfield, Britain’s “best ever pop singer,” and we totally agree. She embodies the descripton ‘blue-eyed soul’ building a career on a deep voice that emulated the Motown sound that she loved. Those who overlook Dusty are quite remiss. Her career was in full throttle for forty years, from the 50’s to the 90’s.

Great day to tuna (I meant this; not a typo) us in. I know, it was a bad attempt, but it’s early and it worked for me. We’re not-for-profit. We’re in it for the music every single day. Give us a shot, and help us spread the word.

Ah, yes, another week begins in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming, including new ‘live’ Jesse Winchester, a great singer-songwriter who is sometimes forgotten.

Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester, a man who lives through the voices of others will live through his own today.

This was the same tour that brought Tom Petty’s “other band” through Boston’s House of Blues. I will forever kick myself in the ass for missing this opportunity, but I thought I had many more in the future. Sadly, I was wrong. Mudcrutch may not be The Heartbreakers, but they are a great band nonetheless.

3:00 p.m. Jesse Winchester Live at The Bijou Cafe, Philadelphia, May 26, 1977 NEW!

I’ve seen Jesse Winchester twice in my lifetime, both times as an opening act for Emmylou Harris. When Emmylou breaks into Defying Gravity, few know that the song was written by Winchester. He has made a lot of music over the yeears, and he is appreciated here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we have just added his catalogue to our general rotation and will feature some of his live performances.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

I’ve been missing these crazy guys lately. In just four years before Morrison’s untimely death, the left us a hell of a musical catalogue. Tonight we put them In the Spotlight.

We chose Hypnotic Eye as our first Heartbreakers’ album to be the Album of the Week back a couple of years ago. However, Damn The Torpedoes is second to none. There is no question that this put the band on the map, and there is absolutely no question that this album is an absolute classic in popular music. It kicked off a long and wonderfully amazing 40-year run from one of our house bands (The Beatles being the other).

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We are back with another of our long-players today, an uninterrupted homage to our folk music roots with Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Woody Guthrie, Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Tom Rush, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, John Hartford, Eric Andersen, Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, The Carter Family and many, many more.

Good Morning, Musicologists! How are you all this fine morning. It’s a bit bleak here in the Boston area today. We’re forecasted for heavy rains. We’ll see if it actually happens. Sometimes the weather is spot on, sometimes not.

Woody Guthrie, Eric Andersen, Joni Mitchell and more will grace our airwaves starting at 3:00 p.m. today.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Love Stinks by The J. Geils Band NEW!

The J. Geils Band is a Boston favorite, and this one has been a long time coming. I know it’s sacrilege in these parts, but I prefer the music of the J. Geils Band to Aerosmith any day of the week. Just a personal observation. The band was formed back in 1967 in Worcester, Massachusetts under the leadership of guitarist John “J” Geils, and featured one Peter Wolf on vocals. This is my favorite J. Geils album.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A to Z: Various Artists EXPANDED & UPDATED!

We’ve elevated this playlist up to the level of our Sixties, Girls Day Out, and British playlists, with nearly five hours of old, traditional, and newer artists contributing. You’ll hear Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine, Tom Rush, Jackson Browne, Odetta, Leadbelly, Janis Ian, Tim Hardin, Jesse Winchester, and many others! We are still adding to our folk artist collection, so there will be another update down the road.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles NEW!

To be sure, Phil Spector was a musical genius, having developed the ‘wall of sound’ used by so many performers. I like the wall of sound enough, but probably not as much as others, I have to confess. The Beatles were on the outs when they recorded Let It Be, and mostly they were not in the studio together during time. Phil Spector produced this album and, rumor has it, that John Lennon brought him the tapes when he was pissed off. The first release of this album was with the wall of souond. Along came Paul McCartney in 2004, convinced that the original release was not what was originally envisioned for the album. The result is this stripped down version, and I tend to concur with McCartney here.

2:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists NEW!

Women’s music is nothing new to us, but we’ve never had a long-running women’s playlist until this day. Now, we do. Women continue to get the short end of the stick when it comes to rock music. Hell, that infamous pay-to-play radio conglomerate (whose name we shall not mention) offers quite a few individual stations dedicated to the men of rock, but not one single station dedicated to women. In fact, if you tune in any classic rock station, you almost never hear women played at all. But here, you do.

This playlist features many women. We have Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Cilla Black, Carla Thomas, Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Petula Clark, Nicolette Larson, Wendy Waldman, Phoebe Snow, Norah Jones, and many others. Check out the Playlist section of this blog for a complete set list. All you need to do is scroll to the bottom! It should be up on the blog by noon.

This would be an excellent day to tune us in unless, of course, you’re one of those guys who just can’t bear the thought of women in the musical spotlight for an extended period. This would not be your day.

Today is our second airing of Eva Cassidy’s Songbird album, a compilation album released posthumously. Eva Cassidy never got to appreciate stardom, dying tragically of cancer at the age of 33 in 1996, but her music lives on.

7:00 p.m. Mick Jagger & Jeff Beck Live at The Country Club, Reseda, CA, October 20, 1978

Speaking of the blues, this is a great bootleg from The Country Club. Rounding out the band we have Doug Wimbish on bass, Terry Bozio on drums, and Phil Ashley on keyboards.
