Koko Taylor’s raw, powerful voice led to her title as Queen of The Blues. Koko was no delicate flower; she was a kic-ass, take-no-prisoners blues vocalist with attitude. And we love her in The Mermaid Lounge and give her the spotlight treatment today.

There’s nothing like Tuesday Bluesday to cut your teeth on a great radio station. We don’t infect the airwaves with commercial advertising or mouthy D.J.’s who like to talk through the first minute of every damned song. Instead, we rely on The Music Mermaid to take us through the day. As you know, she has impeccable taste in music.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Gris-Gris by Dr. John NEW!

Here we have Dr. John’s debut album, released on January 22,1968. That’s when Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. introduced us to his alter-ego (that would be Dr. John), reportedly based on a 19th century voodoo doctor. The rest is history. Dr. John shows us his vision right off the top. This album is a great combination of New Orleans R & B and psychedelia. Fun Fact: The entire album was funded by money that Dr. John and his arranger made on Sonny & Cher sessions!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: John Lennon HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

We manage, finally, to pull one of these off on the very day as we celebrate the birthday anniversary of John Winston Ono Lennon, one of the greatest rock n’ rollers of all time and a visionary in his own right. We have music from his days with the Beatles, his solo work and his work with the Plastic Ono Band. Join the birthday celebration tonight.

It’s a day of rest. For those of you who’ve got the religion, remember that even the big guy took a day off. You should as well. Van the Man recorded live in Belfast over a two-night engagement. Not always the most personable man to spend money on, but an amazing singer-songwriter and talent nonetheless.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, November 7, 1969

Another soundboard recording from the worlds most popular jam band in a totally historical venue. A rare repeat here, but it has been a while. It’ll be like new.

Travelin’ Fever!

We’ve Got The Heartbreakers ‘live’ at The Docks, Janis In The Spotlight, and The Zombies in Between, Thursday, October 6, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’re heading for the weekend with some great programming as we feature The Heartbreakers, and celebrate Janis Joplin’s life with her Spotlight feature.

We lost Janis on October 4th and Petty on October 2nd; today we celebrate them both.

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Docks, Hamburg, Germany, April 23, 1999

This is one of The Heartbreakers most outstanding live shows full of their own great originals plus covers like Chuck Berry’s Around and Around, Little Richard’s Lucille, J.J. Cale’s Call Me The Breeze, and The Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth. The same qualities that made them one of the world’s greatest rock n’ roll bands also makes them one of the best cover bands. Recorded live and broadcast on Rockpalast.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Odessy and Oracle by The Zombies

This is the next-to-last airing of this fine psychedelic album so get in on it today. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday, and we’ll have a brand new selection come Sunday morning.

We lost one of the greatest female blues singers of all time on October 4, 1970 and today we celebrate Janis Joplin’s musical life by putting her In the Spotlight. This one has been on the “to do” list for some time, and we’re glad to finally be airing it.

Great musical day here in The Mermaid Lounge. The sun will be back out here in Boston after a couple of days of much needed rain. We’ll be flirting with 70 degrees after a cold spell. It won’t last long, so it’s a day to enjoy. Stop by the Lounge and we’ll take care of your musical itch.

We go for round two airing of this week’s featured album by The Zombies as we toss in a bit of psychedelia for the afternoon. As we said in our blog post on Sunday, it took nearly half a century for this album to be fully appreciated. (But not by me.)

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing the Blues

Tom Petty said he once envisioned his main band growing old together and sitting around in chairs playing the blues together. He never quite got there, unfortunately for all of us. However, he and the boys did sing some great blues together during their 40-year run, and we’ve got those songs here for you this evening as we continue on with Tom Petty month.

It’s always a great day to tune us in, but Tuesday Bluesday is an especially good day to do so. Nope. It’s not a misspelling. Check out the album cover. Be that as it may, we continue our little journey down psychedelia lane with our AOW selection. Rather than me writing a tome here, I’ll give you the review by ‘Discover Music.’

You know an album is timeless when it takes a half-century to be properly appreciated. The Zombies were, however, right into the spirit of the times in 1968, evolving from their R&B origins and writing one of the most enduring peace-and-love anthems, Odyssey & Oracle’s only hit, “Time Of The Season.” But it took decades for most people to hear the rest of the album and realise how beautifully inventive it all was. It’s no secret that The Zombies were squeaky-clean compared to most 60s bands, but this album was visionary as they come.

Welcome to a brand new month as we move into the fall-winter spectrum. We’re happy to be here with the leaves changing and little bite in the air. We’ll counter all that with some hot music. We close out today’s Tuesday Bluesday programming with a guy who left us much too soon. Stevie Ray Vaughan was, without a doubt, one of the greatest masters of blues guitar and one dominant presence on stage. See for yourself tonight.

Tuesday Bluesday generally brings out a lot of listeners, but we’re not concerned with numbers here because this is a labor of musical love. We do not charge for you to listen…no ‘subscription’ required here. That means you never have to divulge your personal information or give us a credit card number. There are things you can’t do here, like build personal playlists but, then again, that was never what radio was about anyway. Good Morning, Music Lovers! We continue our psychedelic album parade today with The Temptations and take a trip across the pond with ‘The British Are Coming,” an EP with music from the British Invasion and beyond!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Cloud Nine by The Temptations NEW!

Released in 1969, this album was a turning point for both Motown and The Temptations as they not only added singer Dennis Edwards to replace the departing David Ruffin, and began a partnership with visionary writer-producer Norman Whitfield. Although at least half of the album is in the traditional Temptations R & B style, they began their journey into Psychedelic Soul with the song Cloud Nine and it’s great wah-wah guitar intro courtesy of Dennis Coffey, and especially with Runaway Child, Running Wild.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

We go back to the sixties British Invasion here, but we do not stop there as we include music from our friends across the pond that spans a couple more generations (we’re very selective, however).
