Maria Muldaur is a woman of many musical styles, including folk, jazz, and blues. She began her career in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village during the great American folk music revival of the sixties, and has forged a six-decade career. A collection of live songs from various locations from the master of the blues harmonica, James Cotton, and his great band: Charles Calmese (Bass), Kenny Johnson (Drums), Mike “Captain Z” Zaitchik (Keyboards), Matt “Guitar” Murphy (Lead Guitar), and George T. Gregory (Saxophone). This is widely considered the best of Cotton’s live recordings.

We take a break and delve into country-rock here with the second airing of Grievous Angel.

This seemed like the perfect time to make this long-awaited spotlight happen, and I promise it will be updated. We are still in the process of adding Marcia Ball’s music to our rotation. Marcia Ball is a kick-ass blues singer and a piano master. She has been around for a while, but doesn’t get the attention she so richly deserves. Born and raised in Louisiana, her style has been described as “where Texas stomp rock and Louisiana swamp blues meet.” You’re going to like her if you don’t already know her.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons NEW!

Gram Parsons never lived long enough to see just how influential he truly was. He died at the age of 26 from multiple drug use in a Joshua Tree, California, on this very day (September 19) in 1973. It’s only fitting we pay him tribute with our Album of The Week.

Parsons was a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist who played with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The International Submarine Band, and as a solo artist. He also collaborated with Emmylou Harris and, in spite of the rumors, they were not lovers. Their connection was music. She, of course, went on to become a country-rock legend.

Gram Parsons brought country to rock n’ roll and helped forge the country-rock genre in the same way that Bob Dylan brought folk to rock. He was that influential in a very short lifetime.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We’re back with the music that helped to bring us to live here in The Mermaid Lounge. This volume focuses more on the mid-to-late sixties. You will hear The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin (with and without her various bands), The Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, James Brown, The Box Tops, Vanilla Fudge, Sly & The Family Stone, The Doors, The Zombies, and many more. It’s over five hours of sixties music!

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Summer Jam, Watkins Glen, NY, July 28, 1973 NEW!

You’ll remember our Music Festival Wednesday this week we talked about Summer Jam in 1973 at Watkins Glen. The bands were The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and The Grateful Dead. We’re still searching for a decent recording of the entire event, but we’ve got the next best thing. This is the most-attended music event in known history, and you got all three bands for a mere $10. Are you kidding me?

This recording of The Grateful Dead (soundboard, so decent quality) is the closest we come since both The Allman Brothers Band and The Band join them on stage toward the end of their set. We hope you enjoy, and we will continue our search.

Great day to tune us in for sure. We’ve got our usual busy Saturday on tap, yet we still give you more hours of wide Open Stream than programmed music. That’s what we’re all about. It didn’t take long for The Band to become one of my favorites, and they have remained in my top three bands of all time today. They started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band but became one of the most important and influential bands in popular music history. This is also a tip of the hat to the nationally-syndicated King Biscuit Flower Hour which brought some of the best bands in history into our living rooms.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell

This is our second-to-last airing of one of the pivotal albums in popular music, which turned fifty in June of this year. The final airing will be on Saturday. On Sunday when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you, so get Blue in while you can!

7:00 p.m. For Foodies Only: Various Artists

One of the most fun sets we’ve put together. Songs with food and drink used in the title or lyrics…some of the songs are not even about either of those things, but it matters not. A great collection of live Bluesbreakers songs recorded live at the BBC between 1965 and 1967, with the great John Mayall at the helm. It also includes two previously unreleased songs from the Old Grey Whistle Test performances, So Much To Do and Taxman Blues.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell

The second airing of one of the greatest recorded albums in popular music history by the great Joni Mitchell, written and recorded during a very turbulent time in her personal life.

7:00 p.m. Muddy Waters: The Johnny Winter Sessions (1976-1981)

Johnny Winter assembled a great backing band for Muddy Waters — a giant of the Chicago blues genre — during these recording sessions, including Pinetop Perkins on keyboards and James Cotton on harp. All the great blues standards are here, Mannish Boy, Baby Please Don’t Go, Good Morning Little School Girl, and even Champagne and Reefer.

The festivities begin at 11:00 a.m. EST, and there’s no better way to get your fill of blues in. We’re totally free around the clock. We don’t ask you to subscribe or give us a credit card. And best of all, there are no commercials to interrupt the flow.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell NEW!

Joni Mitchell’s Blue turned 50 years old in June, so this feature has been on our “to do” list for a while. It’s finally here. This album is rightfully considered to be one of the greatest albums ever recorded, with Mitchell writing and producing the entire masterpiece. It was made right after her break-up with Graham Nash and during her intense relationship with James Taylor, and the songs reflect those events in her life. It was released on June 22, 1971.

Blue was Joni Mitchell’s fourth studio release in a career that gave us so many great albums. The New York Times referred to the album as one of the 25 albums that represented “turning points and pinnacles in 20th-century popular music.”

3:00 p.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

You know how much we love long players here in The Mermaid Lounge. It’s our way of focusing on musical genres. We’re working on Reggae right at the moment. Finding the music and the singers is half the fun. This is a great long player covering five hours of soul and R & B.
