Little Feat “Live” in London, Tom Rush Takes His Turn in The Spotlight, and MOJO is our Album of The Week, Sunday, June 21, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Welcome to Sunday Funday, and it’s a good one today. We have Mr. Petty and his band, Little Feat, and Tom Rush on the schedule.

Here’s today’s Sunday Funday line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers   NEW!

The Heartbreakers’ blues album is on tap this week. We chose this because Mojo was released ten years ago on June 15. The album was their 12th studio album, it was Petty’s first in eight years with the band, and the first with Ron Blair back full-time as bassist after the death of the beloved Howie Epstein. (Blair was one of the original founding members of the Heartbreakers; Howie Epstein took over when Blair left.) The album was recorded in Tom Petty’s studio, The Clubhouse and was largely recorded live in the studio without overdubs. This album offers 15 really great songs by a really great band.

2:00 p.m.    Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theater, London, August 2, 1977   NEW!

Little Feat is like Jello. There’s always room for Little Feat, one of the most amazing, fun, and enjoyable bands on the planet. I’m talking here about the original Little Feat with Lowell George mostly, although the post-George bands were respectable. I saw these guys a few times in my life, but the best show I ever saw was at the Harvard Square Theater, yet another lost venue, with Jerry Jeff Walker opening.

7:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

Tom Rush’s contribution to music cannot be overstated and sometimes people forget him. His recording of Joni Mitchell’s music helped to briing her to the forefront. He was just not interested in star power. I saw this guy on February 8 of this year and he was amazing. He’s 79 years young and still on the road. A real troubadour.

6:00 p.m.     Joni Mitchell Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Colorado (1983)

I have seen Joni Mitchell in concert more than once, most notably during her Court & Spark Tour when she traveled with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express. I have never considered her a ‘warm’ person; she sometimes had attitude with her adoring crowd. I feel the same way about Van Morrison, having seen him more than once also. But brilliant? Absolutely no question. Some days they took themselves too seriously, but their  music? That should be taken very seriously.

10:00 p.m.   Live Dead: The Grateful Dead Live at Zoo Amphitheater, Oklahoma City, OK, September 25, 1985   NEW!

The world’s most famous jam band. The ultimate road band. They’re back for another spin with Live Dead. This week, coming to you from Oklahoma Put on your tie dye and light up a fatty. It’s a fucking Grateful Dead concert.

Happy Birthday to Paul McCartney, Linda Ronstadt “Live” at Budokan, and “Surrealistic Pillow” gets more air time on Thursday, June 18, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Today, we’re going to celebrate Paul McCartney’s 78th birthday with a special playlist. Later, we have another legend — Linda Ronstadt — live at Budokan.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of Paul McCartney   NEW!

This playlist could have gone on, literally, for hours. But I did show some restraint, so give me some credit here! People bitch and moan that McCartney is the most ‘commercial’ of the Beatles. That may be so. But it’s that commercial side of the coin that allows performers to make the music they love. And I certainly have loved being around for Mr. McCartney’s career.

6:00 p.m.    Linda Ronstadt Live at Budokan Hall, Japan, March 3, 1979

Ronstadt dominated the 70s, building a following that was unheard of  for a woman in the male-dominated rock world. Although she didn’t always enjoy playing massive venues, she sold them out routinely. I remember traveling to Los Angeles to see Linda Ronstadt at the Los Angeles Forum on Christmas eve during the Living in the USA tour. One of the best decisions I ever made.

9:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane

The Airplane come back in for a landing this evening with Surrealistic Pillow on board.

The Wailers were initially formed when self-taught musician Hubert Winston McIntosh (Peter Tosh) met the singers Neville Livingston (Bunny Wailer), and Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) in 1963. The Beacon Theater show in 1976 was part of the Rastaman Vibration Tour.

It’s a mystery, folks. According to Harrison, Elvis stood them up. But according Dylan, it was the other way around.
