This is one of those fun albums that is made after many years in the business. Most of these songs have appeared on other of Harris’ albums or on her singing partner’s albums. (Linda Ronstadt has also made a Duets album and we will feature hers next week.) We have played that one here before. This particular outing is a completely different set list of songs, twenty-three in all. It’s a beautiful thing.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Lonely Runs Both Ways by Alison Krauss & Union Station NEW!

This great mostly bluegrass band dominated in the early 2000’s behind the amazing voice of Alison Krauss. This was their twelfth album release (November 23, 2004) and won the band three Grammys in 2006. The song A Living Prayer was also honored with the award for Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year from the Gospel Music Association. Krauss has established herself as one of the most influential artists in bluegrass music and is also one hell of a fiddler.

3:00 p.m. Friends of Mine: Various Artists

This is the newest EP and it’s all about friends, good and bad. We’ve all had experience there, right? 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan NEW!

Undoubtedly one of my favorite Dylan albums as he immersed himself fully in the country music genre. The Nashville recording sessions also spawned some a session with the great Johnny Cash, which we’ve aired on this station many times and will again. One of the songs they recorded, The Girl From The North Country, appeared on this album. The country was in upheaval. Richard Nixon had been elected president in 1968. There were riots everywhere, and Bob Dylan arrived in Nashville and changed the conservative country music perspective. Said Kris Kristofferson, “Our generation owes him our artistic lives because he opened all the doors in Nashville when he did Blonde on Blonde and Nashville Skyline. The country scene was so conservative until he arrived. He brought in a whole new audience. He changed the way people thought about it – even the Grand Ole Opry was never the same again.”

Life on the road is always a big topic for musicians, whether it be by foot, boat, plane or train, and this multi-artist EP proves it. He was a prolific songwriter whose compositions are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, such as Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, Tecumseh Valley and If I Needed You. His songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, including Emmylou Harris (the absolute best version of Pancho & Lefty ever, IMO), Norah Jones, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan himself.

Last week Guy Clark was our featured singer-songwriter and this week we give you his second studio album as our Album of The Week, recorded in Nashville and released in 1976. Clark wrote all the songs on the album with the exception of Black Haired Boy which he wrote with the help of his wife, Susanna. This was the first album I ever heard by Guy Clark. I immediately went out and bought his first, Old No. 1. That is already on our list for the future.

Color is a popular topic in the music world.
