We’ve been playing this as our Thanksgiving tradition since we started back in 2017, and we continue on today with all 18 minutes and 34 seconds. The song, recorded in 1967, occupies one entire side of Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant album. As Guthrie himself explains it, the restaurant is not really called Alice’s Restaurant, even though the song is about Alice and the restaurant. That factoid is in keeping with the song’s continuing mystery. You can find the lyrics here should you want to sing along.

2:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

This is the second airing of our AOW, and it’s a great one. As I’ve said before, greatest hits collections do not often appear on our list (there are always exceptions), but his one belongs here. Not many people realize that Peter Green is a founding member of Fleetwood Mac, and that the Mac started out as a British blues-rock band.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

I remember my first trip to the House of Blues in New Orleans years ago and the painting of Taj Mahal on the box office wall. I’ve been hooked ever since. Taj Mahal, also known as Henry St. Claire Fredericks, Jr., is a blues musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays banjo, guitar, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. He often gives a little world music flavor to the blues. You’ll love him if you haven’t heard him before.

During the sixties, when the band came to be, it was a British blues-rock band led by a great guitarist named Peter Green. His version of Fleetwood Mac remains our favorite here in the lounge. She won six Grammy awards, and 17 blues music awards, and she is a resident of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (1993), The Blues Hall of Fame (2001), and Grammy Hall of Fame (1999). Was the man from New Orleans the first to play rock n’ roll? I think that could be the case. This guy was making sounds nobody else was making back in the day. He was certainly a bona fide pioneer of the craft, of that there is no doubt. His first single, The Fat Man, is credited as the first rock n’ roll record and the first to sell more than a million copies. Between 1955 and 1960, Fats Domino had eleven Top 10 U.S. hits on the Billboard charts. He sold more than 65 million records during his groundbreaking career.

3:30 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Moody Blues NEW!

We have a couple of live performances of these guys, but we thought it was an appropriate time to put a spotlight feature together in light of Graeme Edge’s passing on November 12. He was their drummer and the last original band member. We bring you the best of the Moodies today.
