Van Morrison is a legend during his time, a masterful musician, singer, and songwriter, whose career began back in 1958. His first band was the British blues band, Them. His solo career begin in 1967 with the release of the iconic Brown Eyed Girl. He has never looked back, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge are happy he keeps on going.

Lucinda Williams is known for working slowly, and maybe there’s a method to her madness. Her latest release at the ripe young age of 67 proves that there’s no age barrier to kicking ass.

Speaking of kicking ass, we have Eric Clapton live at Madison Square Garden airing for the first time today. Clapton is an official guitar god. The Kozmic Blues Band was but one of the bands that Janis fronted after Big Brother & The Holding Company and before Full Tilt Boogie, as she continued her quest for the “perfect” band. There isn’t much information out there about the band, other than the members’ names. The link I provided is just about the best info you can find out there, and it’s a fan site.

Like Janis Joplin, The Doors’ leader, Jim Morrison, is one of the members of the ’27 Club’, the rockers who died in their 27th year. There are several others in this group, including Gram Parsons, Jimi Hendrix, and Brian Jones. The Doors were only a factor for four years but, in four years, they made some seriously great fucking music.

On August 26, 1971, the legendary Allman Brothers Band hung out at A & R Studios in New York and delivered some great music. We’ve got it here for you in The Mermaid Lounge.

4:00 p.m.     Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This album is the Heartbreakers’ ode to the blues. Tom Petty once said he envisioned all of them sitting in chairs playing and singing the blues together when they got really old. It’s a shame we will never have that experience now.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal (born May 17, 1942) is the stage and recording name of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and accomplished bluesman, Henry Saint Clair Fredericks. I have bumped into several people who don’t know who Taj Mahal is, and I actually feel sorry for them. Mahal has successfully married traditional blues with influences like Cajun, Caribbean rhythms, Latin, reggae, R & B, gospel, and calypso. He’s an amazing gift to music.

Little Feat “Live” in London, Tom Rush Takes His Turn in The Spotlight, and MOJO is our Album of The Week, Sunday, June 21, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Welcome to Sunday Funday, and it’s a good one today. We have Mr. Petty and his band, Little Feat, and Tom Rush on the schedule.

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers   NEW!

The Heartbreakers’ blues album is on tap this week. We chose this because Mojo was released ten years ago on June 15. The album was their 12th studio album, it was Petty’s first in eight years with the band, and the first with Ron Blair back full-time as bassist after the death of the beloved Howie Epstein. (Blair was one of the original founding members of the Heartbreakers; Howie Epstein took over when Blair left.) The album was recorded in Tom Petty’s studio, The Clubhouse and was largely recorded live in the studio without overdubs. This album offers 15 really great songs by a really great band.

2:00 p.m.    Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theater, London, August 2, 1977   NEW!

Little Feat is like Jello. There’s always room for Little Feat, one of the most amazing, fun, and enjoyable bands on the planet. I’m talking here about the original Little Feat with Lowell George mostly, although the post-George bands were respectable. I saw these guys a few times in my life, but the best show I ever saw was at the Harvard Square Theater, yet another lost venue, with Jerry Jeff Walker opening.

7:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

Tom Rush’s contribution to music cannot be overstated and sometimes people forget him. His recording of Joni Mitchell’s music helped to briing her to the forefront. He was just not interested in star power. I saw this guy on February 8 of this year and he was amazing. He’s 79 years young and still on the road. A real troubadour.

Hey, once again, Europe and Asia has you all beat. They are all over this station. Where the fuck are you? Pull up a tab and turn us on. We’re free. It’ll improve your social media experience.

Jefferson Airplane comes in for a layover and brings this masterpiece with them.

First, they were The Hawks, backing up rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. Then, they gained some notice when they helped electrify Dylan. After that, they became The Band, and the rest is musical history. The Band is Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson, and they are a force of nature.
