It’s Another (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday With Some Trifectas Until Alison Krauss & Union Station and The Shadow Drop In, January 13, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! This is our usual (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday with just a touch of programming to keep you on your proverbial toes.

Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Here’s your mid-week line-up:

All Day (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday

Yeah, we’re circulating about 27,000+ songs every single day, and today is no exception. You’ll have it wide open until evening.

6:00 p.m. Alison Krauss & Union Station Live!

A great performance recorded live at The Louisville Palace, April 29-30, 2002. It was the band’s eleventh album, but their first live album.

10:00 p.m. The Shadow: 07 The League of Terror

This one’s all about counerfeiters, and it features Agnes Moorehead (Bewitched).

Tune us in. You’re wasting so much good musical time when you don’t.

It is Definitely a Mudcrutch Monday! We’ve Also Got A Tribute To Fats Domino, & a New Episode of ‘The Shadow,’ January 11, 2021

Good Morning from The Mermaid Lounge where we have some excellent programming planned for today, so give us a shot!

Mudcrutch, the precursor to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and a great fucking band.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness: The Works!

This is the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with all those years ago. In fact, the original Don’t Do Me Like That was a Mudcrutch song. Mudcrutch didn’t pan out back then, but it morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Then, in 2008, Tom Petty brought the original Mudcrutch back, and it was a whole new ballgame. We have their entire catalogue here this morning. You’ll want to hear this.

5:00 p.m. Goin’ Home, A Tribute to Fats Domino: Various Artists

There is no denying Antoine ‘Fats’ Domino’s place in the annals of rock n’ roll music. I’m not sure anybody was actually playing it before he was. This is truly an all-star tribute, featuring Art Neville, John Lennon, Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Tom Petty, Robbie Robertson, Toots & The Maytalls, Irma Thomas & Marcia Ball, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint and more!

9:00 p.m. The Shadow: 07 League of Terror NEW!

Not only do we have Orson Welles in this episode, but Agnes Moorehead, as they take down a counterfeit ring that is preying on the poor. (Frankly, sounds like the government.)

Come on, people. Join us this morning, and then stay with us for the day. We don’t cost a penny. And we don’t want your credit card number or personal information either. We have our own.

It’s Sunday and Linda Ronstadt Owns Our Album of The Week, We Have Chosen Petty’s Top 50 Songs, and Truffle Brings Up The Rear With a Great Live Performance, January 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We have a great line-up for you today, including our new Album of The Week and our first attempt to list Tom Petty’s Top 50 songs.

Tom Petty’s music will stand the test of time.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt NEW!

By 1998, when this album was released, Linda Ronstadt was an accomplished veteran of the music scene, and certainly a pioneer for all women in the male-oriented rock world who had more than made her mark. As such, she was at the stage of her career where she could make anything she wanted. And she did. This was effectively her final rock n’ roll album, interpreting songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen, and Naomi Neville. Neville’s Ruler of My Heart and Hiatt’s We Ran were the hooks for me.

As for the musicians who contributed to this album? They were the best of the best: Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers, Bernie Leadon (formerly of The Eagles), drummer Russ Kunkel, and guitarists Andy Fairweather Low, Waddy Wachtel, and Bob Glaub.

This is probably her most eclectic album ever, and one of my favorites.

2:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Tom Petty’s Top 50 Songs NEW!

Someone sent me an email about two months ago challenging me to do this, so I finally found some time to make it happen. This includes Petty’s solo work, and his work with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys. It’s my Top 50. For now. This is subject to change without notice, by the way.

The playlist will be up under the Playlist tab prior to the airing.

7:00 p.m. Truffle Live at The House of Haze, Farmington, New Hampshire, October 18, 2020

We are giving some airtime here to a great local band whose music embodies everything we play here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. In case you missed this airing the first time around, we are rerunning it this evening, and we will be adding their collection to our standard rotation over the next few weeks.

Who the hell knows what it takes to get people to tune in. At least here in America, where they appear to be a bit slow on the uptake on many issues. Perhaps they prefer endless talk, commercials or paying for what they used to get for free (shades of Tom Petty’s The Last DJ. Hey, Hey, Hey).

The Women Own It: We Have Young Linda Ronstadt and The All-Girl Revue 4 Sandwiched Around The Final Airing of The Shadow, Friday, January 8, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! The ladies own the day today, and rightfully so. And by the way, there is no other radio station shining a light on women in rock music.

We’re all in on The women of rock n’ roll today. Get with the damned program.

Here’s your line-up for this fine day:

11:00 a.m. Linda Ronstadt: The Stone Poneys & The Early Years

A pretty concise retrospective here of Linda Ronstadt’s beginnings, before she stole that show on that Neil Young arena tour and before Heart Like A Wheel launched her incredible career. The groundwork was laid with The Stone Poneys and her early contributions.

3:00 p.m. The Shadow: 06 House of Horror FINAL AIRING!

Our final airing of this week’s episode of The Shadow. On Monday, we will have episode seven.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 4: Various Artists

It’s funny how women continue to be a footnote in rock n’ roll history. There is so much evidence of their contribution that it cannot legitimately be denied. Here in The Mermaid Lounge, we don’t view rock n’ roll as strictly a man’s world. The evidence is quite to the contrary.

In this volume of The All-Girl Revue you’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Valerie Carter, Petula Clark, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Carly Simon, and many more!

Tune us in. We’re free. I mean, really free: No credit card or personal information required. All you need is a computer ad a free tab. No shit. No lie.

Harrison & Clapton Live From Japan, It’s Mudcrutch Monday and They’re Live From Hollywood, and Episode 3 of The Shadow, Monday, December 14, 2020

Good Morning, Music Addicts! We’ve got some great stuff planned for today, including two live events. This is Mudcrutch Monday, by the way, and we’ve got live music from their 2016 tour!

Eric Clapton persuaded George Harrison to tour with he and his band in Japan after a 17-year hiatus. We have the music.

Here’s today’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. George Harrison & Eric Clapton Live in Nagoya, Japan 1991

George Harrison was persuaded by Eric Clapton to return to touring after 17 years away from the road. This music is from their 12-date Japan tour in 1991. All of the songs were recorded on December 2 and 5.

It should be noted that the drummer on this tour was none other than Steve Ferrone, who would go on to spend 25 years as drummer for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

4:00 p.m. It’s Mudcrutch Monday! Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood, June 26, 2016

This is a great bootleg of Mudcrutch’s performance at the Fonda Theatre during their 2016 tour. Stephen Stills turned out to be a surprise special guest at this show. This is one of my deepest regrets in life now that Tom Petty is gone: Missing the 2016 show in Boston where Mudcrutch blew the roof off the House of Blues (according to a friend in attendance), and recorded the definitive version of the great song, Hungry No More. I may never recover.

8:00 p.m. The Shadow: 03 Death From The Deep NEW!

Who has been sinking all of these ships of many country origins, of various sizes and with various functions? I’ll be damned if I’m going to tell you. You will have to listen to see what The Shadow knows.

Come on, people. It’s Monday. I don’t know what it’s like where you are, but it’s pretty damned dreary here. I’m already tuned in with my headphones on. What are you doing?

It’s (Mostly) Open Stream Until Wilbury Wednesday Kicks In and The Shadow Drops By Later, December 9, 2020

Here we are again in the middle of the week with Open Stream and another Wilbury Wednesday with Otis, Lucky, Lefty, Nelson, and Charlie T. Jr. These guys are always a good time!

The original Traveling Wilburys, before Roy Orbison’s passing in 1988. The best supergroup on the damned planet.

Here’s today’s line-up!

All Day (Mostly) Open Stream with Three-in-a-Row’s

We are rotating more than 26,000 songs now. We recently added The Kingston Trio, The entirety of the new Petty Wildflower’s & All The Rest and American Treasure boxed sets, some live Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt, and LaVern Baker. We’ve also added more Jerry Jeff Walker and Roy Orbison solo work. We continue to build the library.

5:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: Welcome to Another Wilbury Wednesday!

Last time around, we offered up some great bootlegs that nobody has ever heard before. This time around, it’s their entire released catalogue. Sit yourself down and relax, and listen to some of the best songs on the planet from what is largely considered to be the absolute best supergroup ever.

9:00 p.m. The Shadow: Caverns of Death

Join Orson Welles with this classic Old Time Mystery Radio show!

We’re here 24/7 without interruption: No endless DJ chatter. No advertising. We don’t ask for your personal information or your credit card. That’s because we’re not here to make money. We’re here to deliver great music that you absolutely DO NOT hear on other stations.

It’s A Great Day When You Have Harris & Ronstadt Live On Stage Together, Laura Nyro Owns the Album of The Week, and The Band Closes Out The Programming, Sunday, December 6, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! This is my prototypical perfect programming day. The ladies dominate today, but we have The Band bringing up the rear later to close out the programming. (We do, however, return to Open Stream after; we are 24/7 baby; no interruptions.)

Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris together. Today, we have their Boston concert from 1999 on The Western Wall tour.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of the Week: Eli and The Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro NEW!

Laura Nyro has made many people famous because she was such a fucking amazing songwriter. But when she sings her songs herself, it’s amazing. She has a special place in our hearts here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris, Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, on The Western Wall Tour, October 1, 1999 NEW!

It is not often that you have two amazingly talented singers on stage together. To say that they sound like angels is a phrase that is often over-used, but not in this case. The singing would be enough for me, but hearing them talk about the history of some of their songs and introducing their amazing band is an added bonus. This is the reason I spend so much time “finding” music out there. It’s a lot of work but, when you find something like this, it makes it all worthwhile.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

The Beatles. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The Band. My big three. They started out as Bob Dylan’s back-up band. Then they managed to forge a musical career of their own that is unrivaled in many ways. Tonight we close out the programming by putting them In The Spotlight.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for. We have some people from Denmark and Norway who have been on for three days solid now. We’ve recently added listeners from Argentina and the Russian Federation. Maybe people here just take this shit for granted. I feel sorry for you. Your lives must be empty if you don’t listen to music. And if you’re still paying for this stuff, your wallets are also empty.

As Usual, It’s (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday With The Flying Burrito Brothers and Emmylou Harris Later, November 25, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! We hope you’re ready for Wide Open Streaming until late this afternoon

The Flying Burrito Brothers Featuring Gram Parsons.

Here’s today’s line-up:

All Day Wide Open Stream Wednesday

We’ve tossed in some Three-in-a-Rows for good measure. We’ll be circulating more than 26,000 songs for your listening pleasure!

4:00 p.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers, Live at The Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, April 4, 1969 NEW!

The Gram Parsons version of The Flying Burrito Brothers, I might add. The Brothers are actually the opening act at The Avalon for none other than The Grateful Dead. A splendid time was had by all.

7:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & Spyboy, Live in Zurich 1997

Emmylou Harris in a great performance with her band Spyboy, which she formed specifically to tour in support of her 1995 album, Wrecking Ball.

People, this is a golden opportunity to tune us in. Come on. You know you want to. Just do it.

It’s Mudcrutch Monday and We Have Live Janis Later On, November 16, 2020

Good Morning, Gang! It’s another Monday from The Mermaid Lounge, and we intend to make it count today.

I just love this photo. No significance here other than the fact that it’s Mudcrutch and The Shelters (whom Tom Petty was mentoring) and it was sold out.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Madness! The Complete Catalogue.

All the Mudcrutch that you can possibly play (except for live bootlegs which will be coming). Did you know that Don’t Do Me Like That was originally a Mudcrutch song? We’ve also got the definitive live version here of Hungry No More, recorded at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016.

Afternoon Open Stream with Three-in-a-Row

Whatever the stream collects as it flows is what we’ll be playing for the afternoon. Listen for some 3’s from Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, and Steely Dan.

6:00 p.m. Janis Joplin Live at The Fillmore East, New York, February 12, 1969

We’ve got some live Janis going here, and that is always a treat for sure.

This is the day to tune us in. Every day is the day to tune us in. Ask the folks in Lithuania. They love us.

The Ladies Kick Off The Festivities, Our Album of The Week is Back, and The Soul Men Kick Ass This Evening, Thursday, November 5, 2020

Yes sir! And if that isn’t enough for you, we’ve got some great three-in-a-row’s lined up today. You really need to be here. It’s better than the shit on television, especially with this real-time shitshow going on.

The Ladies are in command this morning.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 4: Various Artists

It’s always a good day when the ladies are starting us out. Today we have volume 4 in our series, with Carly Simon, Lucinda Williams, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Carole King, Joan Baez, Phoebe Snow, and many more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sweet Baby James by James Taylor

We’re winding down here. After today, there’s only one more chance to hear this great album before we choose our new Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. The Soul Men, Volume 1: Various Artists

Another open-stream-type playlist that has become popular here in The Mermaid Lounge. This one features Bill Withers, Al Green, Wicked Wilson Pickett, Freddie King, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Otis Redding, Slim Harpo, The Four Tops, Fats Domino and more.

Call me biased, but this seems like a hell of a day to tune us in. Odds are you’ll find something you’ll like. Unless, of course, you’d rather pay for what you used to get for free. You know, before money became king. If that’s the case, I can’t help you.
