Undoubtedly the biggest, baddest electric blues band around with the finest lead guitarist in Derek Trucks and the perfect front woman in Boston’s own Susan Tedeschi. They’re coming to Boston in September. If I were still doing big venues (which I’m not), I’d be there for sure. If you’re still into big venues, don’t miss them. Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real is the opening act and they don’t suck either.

It’s Simply Sunday With Our New AOW From the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and ‘The Psychedelic Express’ EP, August 20, 2023

We keep it pretty simple here in The Mermaid Lounge on Sundays. A couple of great programs with a lot of big, wide Open Stream. This Sunday is no different.

Get on board with today’s programming:

Paul Butterfield Blues Band is widely regarded as one of the greatest electric blues bands ever, whose contributions to the genre during the 60s and 70s cannot be denied, but it’s safe to say a lot of Butterfield’s fans were not enthralled with this release. That’s what happens when people get pidgeon-holed into doing the same thing over and over. Do I think it’s one of their best? Nope. I don’t. But I don’t regret owning it, or playing it as our AOW.

3:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Hell, if the AOW disappoints, drop a tab and tune in to The Psychedelic Express where you’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

Today It’s Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP, the Final Airing of The Kinks’ AOW and We Introduce Ray Davies as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, August 19, 2023

Good morning, folk music lovers! We are back with our big, bad EP that delivers all things folk, from the early pioneers of the genre to those who pay it homage as part of their musical repertoire.

Here’s Saturday’s musical lineup:

Today we take you back to Woody Guthrie and bring you through the great folk renaissance of the sixties and seventies. You’ll hear John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, James Taylor, Phil Ochs, Harry Chapin, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, The Carter Family and more!

Today we bid a fond farewell to The Kinks’ Album of The Week…on a day when we introduce the guiding force of the Kinks as our featured singer-songwriter! Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album in place.

Tonight we introduce The Kinks’ guiding force as our new singer-songwriter. Ray Davies was the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter for this great British Invasion band. It’s only fitting that he’s featured this week.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday Here With Our ‘Best Of Louisiana Blues’ EP and B. B. King In the Spotlight Later, August 15, 2023

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of B. B. King

One of the giants of The Blues is back, along with his sidekick Lucille, for your listening pleasure. Been a while since we aired this one.

Before, in between and after our programming we run 24/7 on our big, wide Open Stream. While I’m working today, The Music Mermaid will be in charge. She’s go timpeccable taste in music, as you well know by now.

Monday is Made for Mudcrutch. And We’ve Got Janis Joplin To Kick It Off! Start Your Week Here, Monday, August 14, 2023.

Here’s your Monday musical landscape:

7:00 p.m. The Best of Mudcrutch Live: The 2016 Tour

You all know by now that one of my biggest musical regrets is not seeing Mudcrutch at The House of Blues here in Boston. This playlist seals it for me: I was dumb as a bucket of rocks to miss this concert.

We’ve got a lot of wide Open Stream today, and that’s always a good thing because you never know what The Music Mermaid is going to pull out of her top hat. As you well know, she has exceptional taste in music.

Although it’s what some might call an ‘unremarkable’ album, it did spawn three single releases, and it’s always a treat when Crissie Hynde shows up for your album (she had a thing going with Ray Davies a the time).
