It’s Sunday and Linda Ronstadt Owns Our Album of The Week, We Have Chosen Petty’s Top 50 Songs, and Truffle Brings Up The Rear With a Great Live Performance, January 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We have a great line-up for you today, including our new Album of The Week and our first attempt to list Tom Petty’s Top 50 songs.

Tom Petty’s music will stand the test of time.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt NEW!

By 1998, when this album was released, Linda Ronstadt was an accomplished veteran of the music scene, and certainly a pioneer for all women in the male-oriented rock world who had more than made her mark. As such, she was at the stage of her career where she could make anything she wanted. And she did. This was effectively her final rock n’ roll album, interpreting songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen, and Naomi Neville. Neville’s Ruler of My Heart and Hiatt’s We Ran were the hooks for me.

As for the musicians who contributed to this album? They were the best of the best: Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers, Bernie Leadon (formerly of The Eagles), drummer Russ Kunkel, and guitarists Andy Fairweather Low, Waddy Wachtel, and Bob Glaub.

This is probably her most eclectic album ever, and one of my favorites.

2:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Tom Petty’s Top 50 Songs NEW!

Someone sent me an email about two months ago challenging me to do this, so I finally found some time to make it happen. This includes Petty’s solo work, and his work with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys. It’s my Top 50. For now. This is subject to change without notice, by the way.

The playlist will be up under the Playlist tab prior to the airing.

7:00 p.m. Truffle Live at The House of Haze, Farmington, New Hampshire, October 18, 2020

We are giving some airtime here to a great local band whose music embodies everything we play here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. In case you missed this airing the first time around, we are rerunning it this evening, and we will be adding their collection to our standard rotation over the next few weeks.

Who the hell knows what it takes to get people to tune in. At least here in America, where they appear to be a bit slow on the uptake on many issues. Perhaps they prefer endless talk, commercials or paying for what they used to get for free (shades of Tom Petty’s The Last DJ. Hey, Hey, Hey).

It’s Another Kick-Ass Saturday With The Laurel Canyon Crowd, Joan Baez, Elvis’ Birthday Playlist, and Live Dead, on January 9, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Saturday is our big day on the programming scale but, in spite of that, our musical day remains mostly Open Stream.

The Grateful Dead. The ultimate jam band at the closing of Winterland.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists

It was all happening in the canyon back in the day. They were all groovin’ together, feeding off each other, and it produced some of the best damned sounds in the history of popular music. They inspired people like Jakob Dylan and Tom Petty. This playlist is about just over 2.5 hours and features The Mamas & The Papas, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez

The final airing of Joan Baez’s brillian debut album, recorded when she was just nineteen. Get in on it now. It will be gone tomorrow when you wake up!

7:00 p.m. Elvis Presley: The Sun Sessions

We’re celebrating Elvis Presley’s birthday a day late. That’s usually how it goes around here. We do our best, but my multiple personalities have their limits. Today, we’re playing his songs from The Sun Sessions, recorded at Sun Studios during 1954 and 1955. It’s produced by Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records, who gave Elvis his start, and includes one of the greatest (and some people argue, the first) rock n’ roll songs ever, That’s All Right. Happy Birthday, Elvis.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Winterland, October 22, 1978 NEW!

We made it through last year for 52 weeks with no repeats. And we intend to attempt the same here. Let’s face it. It should not be difficult. The Dead played Winterland alone 48 times. This is just one of them. Enjoy, Deadheads.

Saturdays are always a fucking great day to tune us in. Why don’t you give it a shot? We are free. No credit card or private info required. No advertising accepted. No endless DJ chatter. You have no idea what you are missing.

Jefferson Airplane Live at The Matrix, Our Expanded Folk Music From A to Z, and Our Album of The Week, on Thursday, January 7, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers. We are here in The Mermaid Lounge setting you up for a great day musically with new material and an update of some old.

Joan Baez has our Album of The Week, and appears in our Folk Music From A to Z Playlist.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Jefferson Airplane Live at The Matrix, San Francisco, February 1, 1968 NEW!

We are kicking out the day with some psychedelic rock! Shows by these guys are tough to come by, but we’ve got some others on the way! This one was broadcast on KMPX Radio back in the day.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez

Winding down with our third airing this week. We will have one more some time Saturday before we reveal our new selection on Sunday!

7:00 p.m. Folk Music From A to Z UPDATED AND EXPANDED!

We’ve really expanded this playlist wth the recent addition of new music, and we intend to expand it even further, like we did our British Invasion, Blues, and Sixties playlists. You can hear Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, The Beatles, Tim Hardin, Jesse Winchester, John Prine, Tom Rush, James Taylor, Pete Seeger, Odetta, Woody Guthrie, Eric Andersen, Harry Chapin, and more!

Come on, children. It’s time for you to catch up to the rest of the world and pull up that tab. It’s amazing the world that awaits, because you’ll be instantly connected with music at no charge — no credit card or personal information required. And, no. You don’t have to worry about us. We’re not Illuminati. We’re not tracking your every move. We’ve got nothing to sell you.

Come on. You know you want to.

It’s Another (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday With Visits From Jethro Tull and The Shadow, January 6, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s another nose-to-the-grindstone morning as we shove all this shit out before the working bell rings.

Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull.

Here’s today’s line-up:

All Day (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday with Some Trifectas!

Once again, we’re circulating 27,000+ songs. We added 500 new files last week alone. Remember to listen for those Trifectas! (Yeah. I renamed them. The other was too complicated to type.)

5:00 p.m. Jethro Tull Live at The Capitol Centre, Landover, Maryland, November 21, 1977

Jethro Tull was one of the finest, most unique bands on the planet. I saw them at least three times that I can remember, but the most memorable one was at the Music Hall in Boston. And the fact that I can remember any of my musical escapades at all is a miracle.

9:00 p.m. The Shadow: 06 House of Horror

The one about the stolen gorilla, the mad scientist, and a brain transplant. What could possibly go wrong?

I hope you folks have a wonderful day. But I promise you’d feel a lot better about life if you’d just tune us in. I’m actually quite serious about that. I mean, seriously, what do you have to lose?

The Association Live at The Salt Palace, The Lovin’ Spoonful In the Spotlight, and a New Episode of “The Shadow” Await You, on Monday, January 4, 2021

Good Morning, Music Maestros! Here we are kicking off another week from The Mermaid Lounge at #BecomeUngovernable Radio! We’ve got some great programming today mixed in with all that Open Stream!

One of my favorites here, The Lovin’ Spoonful, led by John Sebastian (right).

Here’s today’s musical line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Association Live at The Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, Utah, April 3, 1970 NEW!

Here we are with one of the more underrated bands of the sixties. I think The Association is one of the most intriguing bands of sixties, hard to pin down, and with a really nice sound. I wasn’t intending on a Haiku. Sorry.

3:00 p.m. The Shadow: 06 House of Horror NEW!

Okay, here’s the deal: A mad scientist steals a gorilla from the zoo. (How is that possible?) There’s also a brain transplant involved, but I’m not giving you the details. By now, you are so on the edge of your seat that you just have to tune this one in. While I won’t reveal the details, I will say that I think The Three Stooges also did this episode.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Lovin’ Spoonful

“In a coffee house Sebastian sat, and after every number they’d pass the hat…” Those are the lyrics from The Mamas & The Papas song, Creeque Alley, the story of the Laurel Canyon days. They also talk about McGuinn (The Byrds) and McGuire (Eve of Destruction), but Sebastian is John of The Lovin’ Spoonful, a great little sixties jug band. Those were the days.

Well, you have a lovely day in spite of the fact that it is Monday. You could always improve your attitude by tuning us in. We’re free. We don’t ask for your info or your credit card number. And we certainly don’t want your personal details. We’ve got nothing to sell you.

The British Are Back, There’s LIVE DEAD From The Harding Theater in San Francisco Later, and Our Final Airing of “Moondance,” Saturday, January 2, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s time for the British Invasion to make a return trip to our shores! We’ve also got a brand new Live Dead tonight and the final airing of Van Morrison’s brilliant Moondance this afternoon.

The Grateful Dead. No matter what kind of shit Bob Weir tries to sell you, there is no Dead without Jerry Garcia.

Here’s today’s line up:

10:00 a.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

Yes, it’s that time of month. We have the British back on our shores with more than five hours of uninterrupted stream of British Invasion music and then some. Hear The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, The Searchers, Lulu, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Kinks, Cream, The Rolling Stones, and more. No commercials. No chatter.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Moondance by Van Morrison FINAL AIRING!

This is your last chance to hear Van Morrison’s brilliant Moondance album. We’ll have a brand new selection tomorrow morning on the blog when you wake up.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Harding Theater, San Francisco, November 7, 1971 NEW!

It’s the world’s ultimate jam band back again with a brand new show. Even if they’re playing consecutive nights on the same tour, no two Dead shows ever sound the same.

Tune us in. It’s Saturday. Play us in the background. Around all this great programming, we have 24/7 live stream. We’re completely OUTSIDE the system.

Donovan In the Spotlight, Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore, and Van Morrison’s MOONDANCE is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, December 27, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have a rather eclectic mix of programming from The Mermaid Lounge today, and we’re proud of it!

“I’d rather play a few nights at the Fillmore than one night at an arena” -Lucinda Williams

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Moondance by Van Morrison NEW!

We move from The Band’s Moondog Matinee to Van Morrison’s Moondance. There’s a certain unplanned symmetry to this selection. But this is undoubtedly one of the finest albums ever made in the history of popular music. It is more than a worthy selection as our Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Donovan

It has been a while since we heard from this guy. He certainly made some of the most memorable music of the sixties, and is one of my personal favorites.

7:00 p.m. Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, November 20-22, 2003 NEW!

These live songs were recorded over a three-night performance at The Fillmore in San Francisco on November 20, 21 and 22, 2003. Released in 2005, this was Lucinda’s first live album ever, and it’s a great one.

Beyond this, we’re on Open Stream, just as we are every single day with no advertising, no political talk, and no chatty DJ’s. We don’t cost a damned penny, we don’t ask for your credit card, and we do not require personal information. Just click on the link and see for yourselves.

Roy Orbison In the Spotlight, The Final Airing of Moondog Matinee, Selections From Monterey Pop, and Tonight’s Live Dead, Saturday, December 26, 2020

Well, Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s our usual busy Saturday here in The Mermaid Lounge as we kick off some new playlists to carry us into the New Year!

Five-octave Roy Orbison, the man with the golden voice.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Roy Orbison NEW!

We’ve got all the Roy you want here, from his outstanding solo career right up on through his time as a member of The Traveling Wilburys with friends George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan, the best damned super group on the planet. Ever. Enjoy this one.

The set list is up under our Playlist tab. Simply scroll to the bottom!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Moondog Matinee by The Band FINAL AIRING!

We’re closing out Moondog Matinee today. Tomorrow when you wake up, there’ll be a brand new Album of the Week ready to go!

6:00 p.m. Selections From the Monterey International Pop Music Festival, June 17-19, 1967

Since today marks the day the rockumentary hit the theaters back in 1968, we thought we’d commemorate the precursor to Woodstock by playing some tunes from the festival.

The set list is also up under the Playlist tab. Again, just scroll down.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, April 12, 1986 NEW!

Another new ‘Live Dead’ offering for this week. We’ve played no duplicates here since this little extravaganza began, and we will go as long as we can with new material! This one comes from the now-demolished Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre.

Tune us in, people. No commercials. No credit card required. No memberships. No personal information. What’s the matter? That make you nervous?

Our Antidote To Christmas Music: Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Band and MOONDOG MATINEE, and Later It’s That Sweet Soul Sound, Thursday, December 24, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are on holiday, and we’ve got the perfect antidote to that bad Christmas music that I know is playing in ACE Hardware today. Luckily, I’m here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Dylan and Petty. Does it get any better? Not from where I’m sitting.

Here’s your Christmas Eve day programming!

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live in Sacramento, June 12, 1986

One day, Bob Dylan asked Tom Petty to go on tour with him. There’s a reason why all these guys wanted The Heartbreakers around. You’re about to find out just exactly why. In return, all of the members of The Heartbreakers credit Dylan with teaching them the importance of adjusting plans, songs, and being more spontaneous on stage. It was a marriage made in music heaven.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Moondog Matinee by The Band

I could go on and on about The Band, undoubtedly one of the great treasures in American popular music. They may have started as Dylan’s back-up band, but they carved their own very real place in music history.

7:00 p.m. That Sweet Soul Sound: Various Artists EXPANDED AND UPDATED!

This is a great playlist to close out today’s programming. We’ve added some new music, so we’ve added some new songs to the playlist. We hope you’ll enjoy hearing Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Mary Wells, James Brown, Rare Earth, The Box Tops, The Marvelettes, Jackie Wilson, The Temptations, Ann Peebles, Bill Withers and many more!

It’s Christmas. Time to pack it in. Be done with the pursuit of capitalism, and tune in to a radio station with no ulterior money-making motives. We don’t ask you to subscribe. We don’t ask for your credit card. We don’t ask for personal information because we don’t intend to sell you anything. We’re here for the music, believe it or not. If you choose not to believe, then all I can say is that you have no idea what you are missing.

The Brothers recorded live on March 10 and 11, 1992, at the famed Beacon Theatre in New York, including almost 21 minutes of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.
