We Feature Wildflowers’ Home Demos, Dusty Springfield In The Spotlight, and Tuesday Bluesday, October 20, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve cooked up another great batch of programming today for y’all. We move forward on the new Wildflowers project, give you some blue-eyed soul with Dusty Springfield, and it’s also Tuesday Bluesday!

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty NEW!

Today’s Airing: Wildflowers Home Demos

I labeled this ‘Home Demos’ because they are called Home Recordings in the official package. I think it’s important that people understand that these were supposed to be demos. Many were next to being release-worthy. This is basically Tom Petty playing all the instruments, singing, and recording.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Dusty Springfield

Here’s a little blue-eyed soul for you. Dusty is undoubtedly one of the stars here in The Mermaid Lounge. And totally underrated overall.

7:00 p.m. Tuesday Bluesday! John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live at The BBC

Although John Mayall never achieved commercial success, he’s one of the most respected British bluesmen in the business. Even now his followers continue to grow. This compilation was released in 2007, but it encompasses all 12 of the BBC sessions recorded between 1965-1967, as well as two performances recorded on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975. Enjoy!

Yeah, people. We’re going to say it again. We run 24/7 without interruption, no advertising, no endless DJ chatter, no politicians, no bullshit. And we’re free. There’s no hidden charges, no credit card required, and no personal information requested. Are we missing something?

Derek & The Dominos Live, Emmylou Harris Rarities, and A Repeat of Yesterday’s Live Wildflowers, Monday, October 19, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here’s today’s funky mix of music for your listening pleasure, including a repeat performance of yesterday’s unveiling of the live Wildflowers songs.

Eric Clapton during the Derek & The Dominos phase.

Here’s your week-opening line-up:

12:00 p.m. Derek & The Dominos Live at The Fillmore East, October 23 & 24, 1970

Derek & The Dominos, for those not in the know, is a British blues-rock band populated by Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle & Jim Gordon. Their live recordings come from two nights at The Fillmore East. If we were using the term ‘supergroup’ back in the day, this just might be one.

5:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris: Rare Tracks & Forgotten Gems

Here are some tunes you may have forgotten that Emmylou Harris did, some you didn’t know she did, and others she has done with her contemporaries. In short, it’s a great little playlist.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty REPLAY!

A replay of yesterday’s live versions of Wildflowers songs as chosen by Tom Petty’s family and bandmates. These may not be as much a revelation as the upcoming selections will be, but they certainly reflect a band at the top of its game and having a great fucking time on stage. And isn’t that why we love live music?

People, you need to get with the program. Seriously. We’re not going away, so you might as well just give in and pull up a tab. Because, hell, it doesn’t cost you anything and we run all day and night. We are your escape in the middle of this pestilence. Get your musical shit together.

“Wildflowers & All The Rest” Debuts, Johnny Rivers In The Spotlight, and Some Great Soul Later, Sunday, October 18, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers & Petty Fans Alike! We’ve got a great array of music on tap and — as you may have suspected — Wildflowers & All The Rest is our Album of The Week! It’s an amazing volume of work. I’ve already passed through once. The only question was how it would be presented.

We’ll do that in bursts, but we will have one airing in its complete form before the end of Tom Petty Month. We’ll also air the segments twice a week at various times.

Tom Petty in the studio during the recording of the original Wildflowers album.

Here’s your line up for Sunday Funday!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty NEW!

Today’s Airing: Live Wildflowers

There’s a ton of new material here. It’s a revelation about how the guy worked, how he worked with his band, and where he was at the time all of that great music made its way out. We’re starting with all the best damned live versions of Wildflower songs.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Johnny Rivers

Johnny Rivers, ,a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge. One of the best damned singers, songwriters, and record producers many will probably never know. His style encompassed rockabilly, folk, blues, and good old time rock n’ roll. You might want to tune this in.

7:00 p.m. That Sweet Soul Sound: Various Artists

This is one sweet playlist with Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Fats Domino, Roberta Flack, Jackie Wilson, The Marvelettes, The Supremes, and many more.

So, it’s a day of rest. Give it a rest. Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. It’s the only way to unwind. We’ve got great music. And it’s all fucking free. You got a problem with that?

The Heartbreakers Live on Soundstage, The All-Girl Revue is Back; So is Live Dead and UNCHAINED, Saturday, October 17, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Saturday is always our busiest programming day and that holds true today as well. But trust me. It’s all good, as they say.

Bertha. Lookin’ Good.

Here’s your Saturday line-up!

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live on Soundstage, April 19, 2003

This 2003 performance remains one of the best recordings of any band live anywhere on the planet. I’m not the only one who shares that opinion either. The Chicago location opens up all the possibilities of a blues outing, and the band does not disappoint.

3:00 p.m. Album of the Week: Unchained by Johnny Cash FINAL AIRING!

The final airing of this great album is mid-afternoon today. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album featured on the blog.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 3: Various Artists

Tune in to nearly two hours of music with Linda Ronstadt, Phoebe Snow, Lydia Pense (a blast from the past; the lead singer of Cold Blood), The Shirelles, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, and many more!

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, August 13, 1975 NEW!

No two shows the same. Ever. Even on consecutive nights. That’s the legend of The Grateful Dead.

We’re pretty busy this morning. People from around the world are tuning in already. That’s good. Because tomorrow, we begin unveiling Wallflowers & All The Rest from Tom Petty. Be here or be square, as they say.

Creedence Clearwater Revival in The Spotlight, UNCHAINED is Back, The Heartbreakers From Lucca, Italy, Thursday, October 15, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists and welcome to another day from The Mermaid Lounge where we offer quality programming, minimal talk, and great 24/7 streaming.

Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the best damned bands on the planet.

Here’s Thursday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Creedence Clearwater Revival

With the incredible John Fogerty at the helm, Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the best damned rock n’ roll bands on the planet. That four guys from Berkeley could make that authentic Swamp Music sound was equally amazing.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Unchained by Johnny Cash

We’re winding down here. We have one more airing after today, so don’t forget to tune it. It’ll be gone before you know it, and a brand new album will take its place on Sunday.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Live at The Piazza Napoleone, Lucca, Italy, June 29, 2012

Yet another road show from the ultimate road band. I keep saying it: You don’t realize how good these guys really are until you’ve experienced them live. Luckily, I did several times, but certainly not enough.

We’ll keep saying it until someone in the U.S. listens: We’ve got listeners all over the world. You ought to figure out why. And you can only do that by listening in.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday! The Doors Live in Detroit, The Super Session is Our Bluesday Offering, UNCHAINED is back, and a Tribute to the Original Wildflowers Album, October 13, 2020

It’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge, but that portion of the program comes a bit later. We’ve got some great music leading up to that.

The Doors live on stage, 1967

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Doors Live at The Cobo Arena, Detroit, May 8, 1970 NEW!

Brand new to The Mermaid Lounge, delivered by Elves late one evening after a mushroom party. (I made that up.) Enjoy this great concert in spite of my bad fiction.

4:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Wildflowers by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

As we eagerly await the release of Wildflowers & All The Rest, it’s time to go back to the original and remember just how fucking great this album is.

7:00 p.m. Tuesday Bluesday! The Super Session (1968) NEW!

Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper (the original lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears), and Stephen Stills lay it down. This one is also new to us even though it’s been on my hard drive for years. (Hey, there’s still a ton of shit to go. Okay?)

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Unchained by Johnny Cash

It’s only fitting that Tom Petty and his bandmates play a role in this great album. Tom Petty had more credibility in traditional country music than any other rocker on the planet. This one won Cash a Grammy.

Well, children, this is probably a really good day to tune us in. You might like it so much that you come back tomorrow. Who knows? As my grandmother said, you won’t know until you try it. And it’s free.

Happy Monday From The Mermaid Lounge, With Lucinda Williams and The Heartbreakers, October 5, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! Today’s mix is Lucinda Williams and Tom Petty. It was Lucinda who opened for The Heartbreakers on their 40th Anniversary Tour at The Hollywood Bowl. It’s only fitting that we pair them up today.

Tom Petty & Lucinda Williams on the 40th Anniversary Tour

Here’s Monday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Lucinda Williams Live From Austin City Limits, December 5, 1998

Lucinda Williams is a singer-songwriter extraordinaire whose bluesy roots rock music has stood the test of time. If her name doesn’t roll off your tongue, it should.

4:00 p.m. Tom Petty: Wildflowers & All The Rest, The New Releases

We’re back with the five new releases from the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers new box set, due out on October 16.

6:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, December 31, 1978

The infamous New Year’s Eve show from Santa Monica with a very young, energetic Tom Petty. That’s how we remember him.

Come on, people. It’s your day to give us a shot here. Don’t waste any more time turning the dial on your radio. Get to your computer or your phone and pull up a tab.

The Heartbreakers Up at High Noon, The Wailers at the Beacon, and Little Feat’s Album of The Week A Bit Later, Sunday, October 4, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Here we are again in The Mermaid Lounge and it’s another great day of music as ROCKTOBER moves along.

Bob Marley & The Wailers

Here is your Sunday Funday line-up:

12:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, March 15, 1999

The Heartbreakers on a leg of their High Grass Dogs Tour.I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The chemistry of this band is beyond amazing. They have it firing on all eight cylinders each and every outing. It’s Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. There’s more where this came from.

5:00 p.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York, April 30, 1976

The Legend and his bandmates, The Wailers, on their Rastaman Vibration Tour live from The Beacon.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting for Columbus by Little Feat NEW!

Again, the most underrated band in rock music because they defy definition. Little Feat is an eclectic combination of rock and roll, blues, boogie, country, folk, soul, New Orleans R&B, and swamp music. Waiting for Columbus was recorded over seven live performances during 1977. The venues were The Rainbow Theatre in London, and George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

Although I generally don’t give a shit what critics think, it should be duly noted that critics widely believe this is one of the finest live albums in music history. And for once, I agree with their position.

Let’s get with the program, America. Everyone else has. Tune us in. This is a great day to start.

Today We Open With Some Heartbreakers, Followed by Bonnie Raitt, Ronstadt at Rockpalast, Our Saturday LIVE DEAD, and Some Wildflowers, October 3, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s our usual full-slate Saturday as Tom Petty Month continues. We’ve got a great Heartbreaker’s playlist today. (Among other great musical experiences.)

I was at this Christmas Eve concert. Best thing I ever did.

Here comes your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under the Covers

The Heartbreakers were not only the best rock n’ roll band I’ve ever experienced, but they were also the best cover band. They loved to add ‘oldies’ for their live shows, even instrumental recreations like Goldfinger and Booker T’s Green Onions, which happen to be two of my favorites. My first introduction to this was their inclusion of a very energetic version of Shout at the ’78 Boston show. Enjoy this playlist. It’s one of two we own. We will get to the other also.

3:00 p.m. Album of the Week: Give It Up by Bonnie Raitt

The final airing of Bonnie Raitt’s excellent Give It Up, our Album of The Week. Tomorrow is a new day. And a new album.

5:00 p.m. Tom Petty: Wildflowers & All The Rest, The New Releases

You’ll be hearing this short playlist regularly as we move toward the release of the entire package around mid-month.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at Rockpalast, Germany, November 11, 1976

Linda Ronstadt as she approached her Zenith. She was in full control of her career from start to finish, and it shows.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at USAir Arena, Landover, Maryland October 9, 1994 NEW!

No two show ever the same. Yet another classic Dead performance here. This one in one of the hearts of the Deep State.

Turn On. Tune In. Drop Out. Sounds like a plan on a Saturday. You?

It’s a Two-Tom Day Today: Petty & Rush, One’s in the Spotlight and One’s On Stage; The New Wildflower Releases, Friday, October 2, 2020

Here we are in The Mermaid Lounge on day two of Tom Petty month. We have a Two-Tom Day today. Seriously good programming.

Tom Rush plays Mountain Stage, Charelston WV – 2009

Here’s today’s Two-Tom line-up:

11:00 a.m. The New Releases: Tom Petty’s Wildflowers & All The Rest NEW!

Very simply, the five latest releases on the way to the new Tom Petty compilation (available October 16), Wildflowers & All The Rest. We thought that would be appropriate today. You can learn more about this release here and on Tom Petty’s official web site. We will repeat this at 11:00 p.m.

By the way, there are ‘home demos’ here that are release worthy for most people.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

Another favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge. And by the way, still kicking ass.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at the Coleman Coliseum, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, June 10, 1995

This is one of my personal favorites, particularly because of the song selection. But hell, they’re great live. Always have been. You can love their albums, but you can really appreciate their talent when they are live.

Come on, people. Get with the program. Today.
