We haven’t had any live Dylan here for a while, and we must remedy that situation. This is one of the best that we’ve been able to dig up from the vault. It’s a good one.

3:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theatre, London, August 2, 1977

Perhaps the most underrated band in rock music history. Little Feat was impossible to pidgeonhole, a brilliant combination of the blues, country, rhythm & blues, and good old fashioned rock n’roll. I saw them a few times before Lowell George’s untimely death, and they never, ever disappointed.

7:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones From The Vault, Live at San Jose Arena, April 19-20, 1999

Mick and the boys tear it up in San Jose. Another band that has stood the test of time, and is still tearing it up on stage, people.

There is no question that this is a Robert Cray Band concert at Club Redux, but he’s joined on stage by Stevie Ray Vaughan at the end for an amazing jam and the encore performance of New Blood. Some of the best musical experiences come in small packages.

3:00 p.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, Spring 1966

Spring 1966 is the closest we can get to the actual date of this performance. This is one for the wayback machine of your mind. Boston had a pretty amazing music scene, I must say. The Unicorn Coffee House (the only beverage served), Club 47, Jonathan Swifts, among the best. We veterans of such places yearn for those days again.

We’re a day late, but today we are celebrating Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair’s 72nd birthday (yesterday). He was an original founding member of the group who left, then came back after the death of Howie Epsein.

Their concert in 2002 after the release of The Last DJ, and turned out to be one of their strongest concerts ever.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Lost Tapes by Valerie Carter

Another airing of this great collection of never-before-released songs by the little girl with the big voice. Valerie Carter is a joy to behold.

This will be the final airing of this week’s Album of the Week. Tomorrow morning, there’ll be a brand new one on the blog.

6:00 p.m. Van Morrison Live at the Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, October 6, 1979

Again, another singer-songwriter who defies the conventional, and he has also built an incredible body of work that began in the sixties with the British blues band, Them. The concert delivered on this date is classic Van Morrison.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The McNicols Sports Arena, Denver, CO, December 14, 1990 NEW!

This Saturday’s Live Dead! is another strong outing by the world’s ultimate jam band. No two shows were ever the same, even on the same tour. Enjoy.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was known as “the second coming of the blues” before his untimely death in a helicopter crash at the age of 35 in 1990, but his legend endures as one of the most amazing blues guitarists of all time. Bonnie Raitt dedicated her album Luck of The Draw to Stevie Ray. It’s only fitting that they are scheduled here on the same day.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Heaven Is In Your Mind by Traffic

Steve Winwood is another of those artists whose legend will endure long after his mortal life, and with good reason. Everything this guy has touched is worth listening to on some level, and he has been around for a very long time. One of my favorite videos of all time is Steve Winwood and Tom Petty on stage together for Can’t Find My Way Home during the Heartbreakers’ 2014 tour.

Bonnie Raitt is another of those female pioneers who never disappoints. It’s amazing to me that even the classic rock stations fail to give these women their due. But here in The Mermaid Lounge, their presence is scheduled to grow.

Otis Redding & The Pretenders in The Spotlight, and The Heartbreakers’ 30th Anniversary Tour on Monday, September 7, 2020

Here we are again on Labor Day. This isn’t about waving flags. This is a day to thank the labor movement for the  advances they made for the working class. Period. Now, let’s get on with the music portion of the program.

Today, we are celebrating two birthdays, Chrissie Hynde (69 years) of The Pretenders, and Benmont Tench (67 years) of The Heartbreakers. Long may they run.

Tom Petty 30th Anniversary Tour Ticket

Here’s today’s musical line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 30th Anniversary Concert, The  Stephen J. O’Connell Center, Gainesville: September 21, 2006

This is undoubtedly one of the finest Tom Petty tours ever, and the Gainesville performance was absolutely brilliant. The band was dead “on” that night. We air this today in honor of Benmont Tench’s 67th birthday.

3:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding

No big event here. It was just time to run Otis Redding’s amazing playlist again. “The Big O” made his debut at The Monterey International Pop Festival back in June of 1967. On December 10, 1967, Otis Redding died in a plane crash, joining Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix in the 27 Club.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of The Pretenders

One of the most outstanding things to happen to music during this time frame was The Pretenders, a really kick-ass band led by Chrissie Hynde, an often-overlooked rock pioneer. Today we celebrate her 69th birthday.
