Living is Easy on Sunday With Our New AOW From Jimmy Buffett and the ‘What’s In a Name’ Multi-Artist EP, September 3, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and the living is easy with our brand new AOW from Jimmy Buffett (yes, this was on the list before his sad passing) and our ‘What’s In a Name’ multi-artist EP starting mid-afternoon.

Here’s your musical lineup:

Affectionately known as the Mayor of Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett passed away on September 1. There was a lot of mystery surrounding his health prior to this, but it is now known that he passed form Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer. Jimmy Buffett was a hell of a ride. If you’ve ever seen him ‘live’ you know his shows were a blast. He was a guy who took music seriously, but had a good time doing it and his ‘Parrotheads’ did as well.

I saw him at Fenway Park in Boston in the early 2000’s, the first time I’d ever seen a musical act at Fenway. It was unbelievable. I took a Buffett shamer with me to the show. Even he had a blast and confessed he went out and bought this very album after. This is as good an album as anyone has released. There isn’t a song we don’t like, and it was on our list from the beginning. I moved it up. Circumstances called for that.

Let’s Keep It Simple: We’ve Got ‘Pet Sounds’ as Our AOW and We Hit The Road With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, Sunday, August 27, 2023

Good morning, serious weekenders! This is our keep-it-simple day today and the living couldn’t be any easier here in The Mermaid Lounge. Read on for details!

Here is your musical road ahead:

This is The Beach Boys eleventh studio release, although it was pretty much a Brian Wilson tour-de-force solo project of major proportions. He composed the majority of this by himself, spurred on by a mystical revelation (there was a lot of that going around those days) and by the work of The Beatles. It is certainly considered one of the greatest and most influential albums in popular music history.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We’re back on the move again with our road warriors, including Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, The Guess Who, The Beatles, Ray Charles, The Marshall Tucker Band, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Del Shannon and more!

Here’s today’s weekenders’ lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

The first few playlists we ever put together here were a bunch of smaller ones that we eventually wove into this masterpiece of the music that inspired the station. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, The Band and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: North South by Paul Butterfield Blues Band FINAL AIRING!

This is the farewell airing for this album. Tomorrow when you roll yourselves out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you.

Brian Wilson is considered a genius in songwriting circles for many reasons, one of which is his novel approaches to pop music composition. There is absolutely no doubt that he is one of the most innovative and influential songwriters of his generation. He also happens to be the co-founder of The Beach Boys, and that is certainly what he is best known for. Today we pay him respects as both because you wouldn’t have one without the other.

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series; The Music of Ray Davies

The heart and soul of The Kinks takes his second turn as our featured singer-songwriter!

I remember loving these guys in the seventies, and even saw them live a couple of times. They’re still out there, but the band has changed members a ton of times over the past fifty years. One thing remains constant: They put together a string of great songs in the seventies that deserves our attention.

Tonight we introduce The Kinks’ guiding force as our new singer-songwriter. Ray Davies was the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter for this great British Invasion band. It’s only fitting that he’s featured this week.

Sundays are Simple Here. We’ve Got Our New AOW by The Kinks. Around Mid-Afternoon, the Ladies Take Over The Mermaid Lounge. August 13, 2023

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

This was the nineteenth studio album by The Kinks, released in the U.S. in 1981 (but in 1982 in Europe). Although it’s what some might call an ‘unremarkable’ album, it did spawn three single releases, and it’s always a treat when Crissie Hynde shows up for your album (she had a thing going with Ray Davies a the time).

Good morning, workers! A brand new week is upon is and we’ve got a brand new Stone Poneys playlist to start off the day, but it doesn’t end there! Read on for details!

Here’s your musical lineup:

When Linda Ronstadt first left Tucson for LA to make music, she met Bobby Kimmel who proposed they start a band. Then came Kenny Edwards (who would become an integral part of her solo career band). Thus, The Stone Poneys were born. The rest, as they say, is musical history as Linda Ronstadt forged an amazing career that earned her the title ‘The Queen of Rock’ in a male-dominated world. These early days are often forgotten, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge as we give you a brand new Spotlight featuring her days as a Stone Poney.

3:00 p.m. Seasons: Various Artists

Yes, we are about to change seasons once again, so we think this is a good time to play this one since we’ve not heard it since the last snowfall. You’ll hear Bobbie Gentry, Janis Ian, Simon & Garfunkel, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Byrds, Hoyt Axton, Sly & The Family Stone, John Prine, The Rolling Stones, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Band, Nina Simone, The Kinks, The Zombies, Electric Light Orchestra, Jefferson Airplane, James Taylor and more!
