Today We’re ‘Under The Influence’ in the Best Possible Way, and We Have Some Live Warren Zevon Later, Friday, July 15, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We are finally at week’s end here, and we’re falling ‘Under The Influence’ with our spectacular multi-artist EP. Later, Warren Zevon pays us a visit.

Today, we’re ‘Under The Influence’ starting at 11:00 a.m. EST

Here’s your Friday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Today, we’ve got a great lineup of artists who will put you under the influence. You’ll hear Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, Glenn Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Warren Zevon Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK, January 25, 1988

This appearance was broadcast on BBC Radio. Undoubtedly one of the most personally destructive artists on the planet, but that may have been what made him so damned good. He was also, without a doubt, one hell of a great singer-songwriter. Flawed, but brilliant. He was laboring in obscurity until someone named Linda Ronstadt discovered his genius.

Join us. We’ve got all that great wide Open Stream coursing through the modest programming we have. Even most of our playlists are multi-artist. We think we strike a great balance here. We too labor in obscurity because we have no dollars to spend on promoting. Please share our stuff if you like us. And did I mention we’re totally 100% without strings free?

We’re at Midweek With Our ‘Are You Ready for The Country?’ EP, and Traffic ‘live’ at the Paris Theatre Later, Wednesday, July 13, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s hot enough to boil a monkey’s bum in these parts, but we’re keeping cool with some great music in The Mermaid Lounge.

We’ve got just one question for you today.

Here’s your midweek musical landscape:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country? Various Artists

Well, are you? We explore some (real) country music and then we have the birth of country-rock from Laurel Canyon mixed in. You’ll hear Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep at The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, The Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Bonnie Raitt, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, and more!

7:00 p.m. Traffic Live From The Paris Theatre, London, UK, April 30, 1970 NEW!

From country to a bit of psychodelia right here in The Mermaid Lounge as we give you Traffic live from the UK. Our many UK listeners are tuned in right now, in fact.

Here we go again, folks. Another day in Hades as we reach the ugly days of summer here in the Boston area. Not my favorite time of year from mid-July to about mid-August. But as we say here, you can’t pick the weather, so you might as well pick good music. And so we are. Then, we’re sharing with you free of charge 24/7 ’round the clock. No commercial interruption, and no need for a credit card.

Monday Starts Our Summer of Love Run, We Have The Heartbreakers Covering Others, and New ‘Live’ Music From The Band, July 4, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists and welcome to another Monday! Forget the date, folks, we’re not celebrating the nation until this march to fascism is halted and we all have the same rights as the rich, bloated white men that own the GOP. Today, the only thing we celebrate is music.

The Summer of Love starts the day off at 11:00 a.m.

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. The Summer of Love, Volume One: Various Artists

Proving once again that misinformation is everywhere, I often see 1969 heralded as the year of ‘The Summer of Love.’ Nope. In fact, it was 1967, and the Summer of Love ran from June to October. And while we here in The Mermaid Lounge know that it wasn’t all peace n’ love in the sixties, that cultural time in history produced some of the greatest music on the planet. You’ll hear The Electric Prunes, The Yardbirds, The Box Tops, Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Grace Slick & The Great Society, Cream, The Doors, The Association, The Spencer-Davis Group, Donovan, The Grass Roots, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Paul Revere & The Raiders and more! This is volume one. You’ll also be hearing volumes two and three later this week!

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under the Covers

One of the greatest rock n’ roll bands of all time was also one of the greatest cover bands of all time. Today Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers cover those who inspired them, including J.J. Cale, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Carole King, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and The Clash, to name a few.

7:00 p.m. The Band Live From Kosei Nenkin Hall, Tokyo, Japan, September 2, 1983 NEW!

We’ve got a brand new ‘live’ performance for you from one of the most influential bands in the history of popular music. They started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band but became a force in their own right. It’s hard to describe the magic of The Band, but it’s real. And they are just great on stage.

Listen, you could do worse on a Monday. Most people have this particular Monday off, and what better day to give us a shot and join your friends from around the globe. Today we have folks from Chile, Canada, Poland, Germany, the UK, Croatia, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Norway, The Netherlands, Cleveland, Dallas, and Frisco tuned in. Where are you today?

It’s Saturday and We Have Our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP, the Final Airing of “American Beauty,” and LIVE DEAD! Later, July 2, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! How the hell are you all this fine, eerily disgustingly humid morning? Well, if you don’t like the soup outside, we give you an opportunity to hunker down with some great music today.

It’s a Dead kind of day here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’ve got an EP with songs waxing poetic about the morning, and also one about the night. This is the latter of the two as you will hear Warren Zevon, the J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, the Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, The Eagles, Joe Walsh, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, The Doors, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens, The Traveling Wilburys and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: American Beauty by The Grateful Dead FINAL AIRING!

Today, we kiss this one goodbye. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new selection to spotlight for the week.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD, March 26, 1973 NEW!

We’ve got a brand new soundboard recording of The Dead here live in Baltimore. This one’s nearly four hours of music.

Why not make today the day you join your friends from around the globe? You’re never alone, we’re global and there’s always someone tuned in at all hours. That’s because we have great basic principles here: We never air more programming than we do Open Stream; we never charge for a subscription; and we don’t employ DJs who like the sound of their voices more than they do music. Did I mention we’re advertising-free and run 24/7 without interruption. What is not to love here?

Today’s Journey is To Laurel Canyon For A Musical Trip Back In Time, and ‘Live’ Allman Brothers Later, Friday, July 1, 2022

Good Morning, Folks! We are kicking off a brand new month in fine fashion here with our ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP and some ‘live’ Allman Brothers Band bringing up the rear.

Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash hanging out in Laurel Canyon

Here’s Friday’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

A trip in the Wayback Machine with The Music Mermaid (instead of Mr. Peabody) to the 60s and 70s and some of the best musical cross-fertilization on the planet as country-rock was born. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Doors, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Carole King, James Taylor, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Souther-Hillman-Furay and more!

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, July 3 and 5, 1970

The Brothers are here for the holiday weekend, although I’m not the patriotic type to begin with and am now less so in the land of lost liberty. Nevertheless, we welcome the Allman Brothers back to the Lounge. We have’t played this one in a bit.

It’s going to be hot as Hades here today, although they did remove the cactus warning from my phone. Once you get past 85 degrees with me, it’s ugly. But it’ll be cool here in The Mermaid Lounge and you can feel free to kick back with some great music today!

We Are at Midweek With Our ‘In Your Dreams’ EP and Our New ‘Long Live the Queens’ Playlist, Wednesday, June 29, 2022

The Queens make their debut at 7:00 p.m. this evening

Here is your midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. In Your Dreams: Various Artists

But plenty have sung songs about them or we wouldn’t have nearly five hours of uninterrupted music from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Aerosmith, Crowded House, the Moody Blues, Van Morrison, The Eurythmics, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Nanci Griffith, The Electric Prunes, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, The Mamas & The Papas, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimmy Buffett, The Allman Brothers Band, Supertramp, Randy Newman, Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Widespread Panic, The Youngbloods, Jimmy Ruffin, Jackson Browne, Mudcrutch, Patsy Cline, Joe Walsh, Dusty Springfield, k.d. lang, and more!

7:00 p.m. Long Live The Queens: Various Artists NEW!

We feature four queens here for you: Linda Ronstadt, the undisputed Queen of Rock; Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul; Irma Thomas, The Soul Queen of New Orleans; and Koko Taylor, Queen of The Blues. Tune in for something really special here.

We’re here every day uninterrupted 24/7 at absofuckinglutely no charge to you. Your money is no good here in The Mermaid Lounge. This is all about the music. Get on board, people. You won’t be disturbed by advertising or overly-chatty DJ’s either.

Today’s live music offering is Badfinger, a true power pop band that made some great music in its time. Today we’ve got them live at BBC Studios in London recorded in 1972 and 1973. Undoubtedly the best signing ever by Apple Records.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Joni Mitchell

It’s been a spell since we featured Joni Mitchell In the Spotlight, so we’re remedying that little miscue today. She’s kind of the sound of summer in a way. We’ve always loved Joni’s music here in The Mermaid Lounge. She is one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters on the planet.

Come on. It’s Monday. And we all know Monday’s suck. I’ve been sick with COVID for a second time here and I return to retail hell myself tomorrow, so why not join me today in kicking back and enjoying some great tunes.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Dream Bowl, Vallejo, CA, February 22, 1969 NEW!

Mr. Peabody put us in the Wayback Machine for this one, vintage 1969 and another new show added to our list of Live Dead performances.

Here in The Mermaid Lounge, we have two strict rules: We never have more hours of programming than we do Open Stream. And we never charge for the music we play. We also don’t require you fill anything out or provide us with any personal information. Hell, we don’t even track you. We’re too damned busy finding new music.

The Weekend is Knocking and We’ve Got ‘The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist’ EP, and Lukas Nelson and Promise of The Real Later, on Friday, June 24, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We are cookin’ today with our very own House playlist, which is also an EP, so that means five hours of great uninterrupted music. Starts today at 11:00 a.m.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real UPDATED!

Here’s a great little country rock band that’s fronted by Willie’s boy, Lukas. Any band that does road duty with Neil Young is okay with us. But POTR is a band in its own right as well, so give them a listen.

Here we are again on the cusp of another weekend, and we’re starting it off with a great extended playlist here. Before, in between, and after our programming, we give you that great, wide Open Stream. We’ve added new music from Bobbie Gentry, Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Gov’t Mule, Koko Taylor, Tracy Nelson, Chuck Berry, and more! We’ve also got brand new playlists in the works to get us through the dog days of summer here. Just. Do. It.
