Led Zeppelin IV was released by Atlantic Records on November 8, 1971, and was a massive critical and commercial success, shipping 37 million copies worldwide. All of the songs were written by the band, with the exception of the Memphis Minnie blues song, When The Levee Breaks.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 1: Various Artists UPDATED!

We’ve got some real interesting songs in this one. Some stuff I know I’ve never put in a playlist before. Includes songs from Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley, ZZ Top, Lucinda Williams, Roberta Flack, and others! it’s a good one.

We certainly don’t play enough of our co-House Band here. But all of this stuff I research has made me understand that sometimes we forget just how fucking good they were. But Bob Dylan? He knew:

“We were driving through Colorado, we had the radio on, and eight of the Top 10 songs were Beatles songs…’I Wanna Hold Your Hand,’ all those early ones. They were doing things nobody was doing. Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid… I knew they were pointing the direction of where music had to go.”

Somehow, there are those great singers who fall through the cracks when they should be much bigger. Irma Thomas is such a singer. She is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin, and she is known as The Soul Queen of New Orleans.

It’s Monday. It’s going to be rainy here with 50-mph winds. I’m turning it up and hunkering down. You should too.

7:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt In-Studio Concert: The Wonderland Tape, August 5, 1977 NEW!

Bonnie Raitt live in-studio in August of 1977, one month after the release of her Sweet Forgiveness album — her sixth album and the one that put her on the map (although, it should have happened much earlier). It also provided her first commercial hit, Runaway, the excellent bluesy remake of Del Shannon’s classic.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Onondega County War Memorial, New York, September 28, 1976 (aka, Dick’s Picks, Vol. 20) NEW!

Yet another live classic from the world’s preeminent jam band. Even if we repeated a concert or a hundred, you’d never know. They never sound the same and you always hear something new. (BTW, there is no Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia.)

The Main Refrain is one of the finest albums ever made from someone many may never have heard of. Those of us who were listening to Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur, however, know Wendy Waldman because they introduced her to their followers. Fame may have eluded her over the years, but her contributions as a writer, singer and producer are immense. She remains one of the most well-respected singers of her generation among her peers. Linda Ronstadt appears on this album, and they combine their voices beautifully on The Eagle and The Owl. Pay attention, children.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 2: Various Artists

Our monthly homage to the inspiration for this radio station with more than five uninterrupted hours of streaming. My affection for Little Feat is well known. But let me say this: There is no Little Feat without Lowell George just as there is no Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia. (Don’t start me on Bob Weir, Capitalist Pig.)

Little Feat defied definition, playing a concoction of blues, rhythm & blues, and good old-fashioned rock n’ roll with some of the absolute best musicians in the business. Enjoy. I did. I was there.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: The Debut Album

It’s always tough for me to take a Petty break, but this is the final airing of this iconic album. Tomorrow, we’ll be introducing our new Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Aretha Franklin

Aretha is the undisputed Queen of Soul. When someone called Whitney Houston that, I nearly had an aneurism. You can forget that shit. It’s propaganda. There is only one Queen. It’s Aretha Franklin.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Indianapolis State Fair Coliseum, October 27, 1973 NEW!

As always, a brand new concert from the Grateful Dead. So far, no repeats since this series started. But even if there were, you’d never know because every show sounds new with these guys.

November 14, 1960: It’s Now or Never by Elvis Presley becomes the fastest-selling single ever in the UK, selling 780,000 copies a week.

Also on this day, Ray Charles goes to #1 for the first time ever with Georgia On My Mind, his ninth hit.

November 14, 1962: The Beatles played the final show of a 14-night run at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. We will soon be featuring these performances here at $BecomeUngovernable Radio.

November 14, 1964: The Supremes reign at the top of the charts for the third week with their first hit, Baby Love.

November 14, 1967: Pink Floyd opens for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and play the first show at Royal Albert Hall in London.

November 14, 1970: Gladys Knight & The Pips release If I Were Your Woman.

Also on this day, Santana releases their version of Black Magic Woman. Most people do not know that the song was originally written by Peter Green, and released by Fleetwood Mac in 1968, when they were a blues band.
