Our New “Between Heaven & Hell” Playlist Debuts, We Hear From The Beatles, and Irma Thomas in In The Spotlight, Monday, November 30, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers. We’ve got some really good stuff going on today, particularly with our new playlist kicking it all off at noon.

This is what we’re taught. Personally, I think we’re already in hell.

Here’s today’s line-up!

12:00 p.m. Between Heaven & Hell: Various Artists NEW!

We’ve got some real interesting songs in this one. Some stuff I know I’ve never put in a playlist before. Includes songs from Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley, ZZ Top, Lucinda Williams, Roberta Flack, and others! it’s a good one.

Take this with a grain of salt, but the playlist should be up before the stream begins. Go to the Playlist tab and scroll to the bottom to see if I make good on my attempt.

4:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Early Years

We certainly don’t play enough of our co-House Band here. But all of this stuff I research has made me understand that sometimes we forget just how fucking good they were. But Bob Dylan? He knew:

“We were driving through Colorado, we had the radio on, and eight of the Top 10 songs were Beatles songs…’I Wanna Hold Your Hand,’ all those early ones. They were doing things nobody was doing. Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid… I knew they were pointing the direction of where music had to go.”

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Irma Thomas

Somehow, there are those great singers who fall through the cracks when they should be much bigger. Irma Thomas is such a singer. She is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin, and she is known as The Soul Queen of New Orleans.

It’s Monday. It’s going to be rainy here with 50-mph winds. I’m turning it up and hunkering down. You should too.

We’ve Got New Bonnie Raitt, The Summer of Love, Live Dead, and Our Album of The Week on Saturday, November 28, 2020

It’s Saturday, and that means it’s like Grand Central Station for music lovers! We’ve got some great stuff today, but guess what? It’s still only a total of eight hours of programming in a 24-hour play cycle.

Bonnie Raitt. Great Fucking Voice. Badass Guitarist. Legend.

Here’s today’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. The Summer of Love, Volume One: Various Artists

Undoubtedly my time here. This was a time in music history when so many really good sounds were made. And they didn’t all sound the fucking same, or come out of the magic box.

This playlist features Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Yardbirds, The Spencer Davis Group, The Box Tops, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Marvin Gaye, Van Morrison, The Doors and many more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Homecoming by America

One of America’s finest albums has its final airing today. Tomorrow when you wake up, there will be a new album posted on the blog.

7:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt In-Studio Concert: The Wonderland Tape, August 5, 1977 NEW!

Bonnie Raitt live in-studio in August of 1977, one month after the release of her Sweet Forgiveness album — her sixth album and the one that put her on the map (although, it should have happened much earlier). It also provided her first commercial hit, Runaway, the excellent bluesy remake of Del Shannon’s classic.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Onondega County War Memorial, New York, September 28, 1976 (aka, Dick’s Picks, Vol. 20) NEW!

Yet another live classic from the world’s preeminent jam band. Even if we repeated a concert or a hundred, you’d never know. They never sound the same and you always hear something new. (BTW, there is no Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia.)

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. That’s the order of the day. So, just do it.

Our Thanksgiving Tradition This Morning, Some R & B This Afternoon; Our Album of The Week and The Kinks Later, November 26, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Here we are on a rainy Thanksgiving with not a damned obligation except great music. And we’re happy about that.

Arlo Guthrie and his fellow hippies at Thanksgiving Dinner at the church that would inspire the song, Alice’s Restaurant, 1969.

Here’s today’s Turkey Day line-up:

10:00 a.m. Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant, Our Thanksgiving Tradition!

If you read the story in our college blog entry today, you know the back story. If you haven’t read it yet, you can — as they say — read all about it here.

2:00 p.m. DJ’s Choice: My Favorite R & B Stream

Every once in a while, I am inspired to string a collection of songs together when I am up late at night. The night I created this was such a night. I hope you enjoy it.

5:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Homecoming by America

We’re winding down on America’s Homecoming album, just a really excellent album. There will be one more airing after today before we choose our new AOW on Sunday.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Kinks

When Ray and Dave Davies weren’t beating the living shit out of each other backstage (and sometimes on stage), they were making some of the best music on the planet. And for that, we are thankful.

Tune in. Turn on. And shovel in that Thanksgiving turkey, if you are so inclined. But whatever you do today, make sure you tune us in.

It’s Mudcrutch Monday and We Have Live Janis Later On, November 16, 2020

Good Morning, Gang! It’s another Monday from The Mermaid Lounge, and we intend to make it count today.

I just love this photo. No significance here other than the fact that it’s Mudcrutch and The Shelters (whom Tom Petty was mentoring) and it was sold out.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Madness! The Complete Catalogue.

All the Mudcrutch that you can possibly play (except for live bootlegs which will be coming). Did you know that Don’t Do Me Like That was originally a Mudcrutch song? We’ve also got the definitive live version here of Hungry No More, recorded at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016.

Afternoon Open Stream with Three-in-a-Row

Whatever the stream collects as it flows is what we’ll be playing for the afternoon. Listen for some 3’s from Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, and Steely Dan.

6:00 p.m. Janis Joplin Live at The Fillmore East, New York, February 12, 1969

We’ve got some live Janis going here, and that is always a treat for sure.

This is the day to tune us in. Every day is the day to tune us in. Ask the folks in Lithuania. They love us.

Welcome to Sunday and Our New Album of The Week & The Sixties Rotation!

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today we have a brand new album of the week, and we have our monthly five-hour, uninterrupted Sixties Rotation. This is the music that is in our DNA here in The Mermaid Lounge.

The Sixties. It’s in our DNA here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

Here’s today’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Main Refrain by Wendy Waldman NEW!

The Main Refrain is one of the finest albums ever made from someone many may never have heard of. Those of us who were listening to Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur, however, know Wendy Waldman because they introduced her to their followers. Fame may have eluded her over the years, but her contributions as a writer, singer and producer are immense. She remains one of the most well-respected singers of her generation among her peers. Linda Ronstadt appears on this album, and they combine their voices beautifully on The Eagle and The Owl. Pay attention, children.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 2: Various Artists

Our monthly homage to the inspiration for this radio station with more than five uninterrupted hours of streaming. The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Canned Heat, The Guess Who, The Doors, The Who, Janis Joplin, Them, The Zombies, Jimi Hendrix, The Searchers and many others take a trip through The Mermaid Lounge today.

Before and after all of this great programming we have Open Stream because we run 24/7 uninterrupted, with no charge, no meaningless chatter, and no advertising. This would be an excellent day to join us.

Little Feat Live, Aretha In The Spotlight, Our Final Airing of the AOW, and Live Dead on Saturday, November 14, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge, and it’s one of our busiest days. In spite of that, the majority of the music is uninterrupted Open Stream.

Aretha Franklin. The undisputed Queen of Soul.

Here’s Saturday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Little Feat Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, October 31, 1975

My affection for Little Feat is well known. But let me say this: There is no Little Feat without Lowell George just as there is no Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia. (Don’t start me on Bob Weir, Capitalist Pig.)

Little Feat defied definition, playing a concoction of blues, rhythm & blues, and good old-fashioned rock n’ roll with some of the absolute best musicians in the business. Enjoy. I did. I was there.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: The Debut Album

It’s always tough for me to take a Petty break, but this is the final airing of this iconic album. Tomorrow, we’ll be introducing our new Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Aretha Franklin

Aretha is the undisputed Queen of Soul. When someone called Whitney Houston that, I nearly had an aneurism. You can forget that shit. It’s propaganda. There is only one Queen. It’s Aretha Franklin.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Indianapolis State Fair Coliseum, October 27, 1973 NEW!

As always, a brand new concert from the Grateful Dead. So far, no repeats since this series started. But even if there were, you’d never know because every show sounds new with these guys.

And there you have it. In a nutshell. All the reasons why we should be your radio station. Even people in Serbia get it. The choice is clearly yours: Continue to pay for uniterrupted music, or listen to endless bullshit advertising. Or tune us in.

It’s Saturday at The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge!

Yes, it’s Saturday here, but retail hell still exists and we are still cookin’ here at the College of Rock n’ Roll knowledge. Shit happens no matter what day of the week it is!

Diana Ross & The Supremes doing what they do best.

Today in rock music history:

November 14, 1960: It’s Now or Never by Elvis Presley becomes the fastest-selling single ever in the UK, selling 780,000 copies a week.

Also on this day, Ray Charles goes to #1 for the first time ever with Georgia On My Mind, his ninth hit.

November 14, 1962: The Beatles played the final show of a 14-night run at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. We will soon be featuring these performances here at $BecomeUngovernable Radio.

November 14, 1964: The Supremes reign at the top of the charts for the third week with their first hit, Baby Love.

November 14, 1967: Pink Floyd opens for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and play the first show at Royal Albert Hall in London.

November 14, 1970: Gladys Knight & The Pips release If I Were Your Woman.

Also on this day, Santana releases their version of Black Magic Woman. Most people do not know that the song was originally written by Peter Green, and released by Fleetwood Mac in 1968, when they were a blues band.

November 14, 1971: Rod Stewart & Faces release Stay With Me.

That’s today’s lesson in a nutshell, Musicologists. Please sign on to follow the blog on the right sidebar and it will be delivered to your email daily. We will be back in a bit with today’s line-up!
