Thursday Brings Another Open Stream Start Followed by Our Album of The Week and New ‘Live’ Warren Zevon, June 3, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We open up with Open Stream, then we pick up the programming pace with our second to last airing of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Exodus album plus new live Warren Zevon broadcast by the BBC.

We’re winding down on this weeks’ AOW offering. Our final airing will be Saturday. Many feel this is The Wailers’ finest album, and it did offer several great hits (Jammin’, One Love/People Get Ready, Three Little Birds), but I say it’s hard to pick this band’s best album. You decide.

7:00 p.m. Warren Zevon Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, January 25, 1988 NEW!

This is new to us here in The Mermaid Lounge, and it was broadcast by the BBC back in the day. There is none of the usual open and closing remarks, but the songs are great. A tortured soul here, an imperfect person for sure (aren’t we all), a guy who burned some bridges in his time, but a musical genius nonetheless.

Mudcrutch Monday Madness and McCartney Dominate Our Programming On May 31, 2021

3:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness

Mudcrutch is known as Tom Petty’s “other” band, but it was actually Tom Petty’s first band…the band that left Gainesville for L.A., the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. When Tom Petty brought the original Mudcrutch back together in 2008, it wasn’t just a diversion for him. Mudcrutch made some serious music, and we’ve got the entire catalogue here today.

It’s Memorial Day here and the only thing we’re celebrating today is music. No parades. No flag waving. None of that nonsense. Just music. Tune us in if you’re hanging around looking for something to do. You won’t regret it.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live at The Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles on The Last DJ tour. You know how the music critics are. Albums with a great collection of songs are not good enough anymore. They all have to have a “concept” behind them. But that is exactly what The Last DJ is: A great collection of songs amidst Petty’s lament about what radio has become. And as someone who grew up with a transistor glued to my right ear listening to AM radio (which was where the best music was at the time), WMEX in Boston, I can empathize wholeheartedly. This is a great performance, people.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Wallflowers by The Wallflowers FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of The Wallflowers. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, there will be a brand new selection. And although we have it chosen, we give you no hints.

7:00 p.m. Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash: In Session, Nashville 1969

Back when Bob Dylan was recording Nashville Skyline, he got together with another master named Johnny Cash and they recorded a bunch of songs. Only one, Girl From The North Country, made it to Nashville Skyline. This is the result of that recording session.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at McArthur Court, The University of Oregon, Eugene, January 22, 1978 NEW!

Tonight we have The Grateful Dead live from McArthur Court at The University of Oregon, another new-to-us LIVE performance for one of the most masterful live bands in the history of music.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of America NEW!

We don’t do a lot of soft rock in The Mermaid Lounge, but these guys made some of the best. And albums like Homecoming (which also did time as our Album of The Week a while ago), Holiday, and their debut album (especially) were great. They get a place at our table. America was formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley, all of whom were sons of U.S. Air Force members. Fun fact: Dan Peek (the middle guy) went on to a career in Christian music. You won’t hear that here.

10:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan

We continue our Dylan birthday tribute with an album that is not our album of the week, John Wesley Harding which was released in 1967. Tomorrow will be our final Dylan tribute for his 80th birthday celebration.

Yes, The early years, when the Fab Four was in its infancy. But even back then, they were a force, no matter what the morons listening to the garbage being made today tell you. They were a really tight band even back then, and were doing things that nobody else was doing. We’ve even got some alternative takes and unreleased music in this particular playlist, so enjoy.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Donovan

Surely one of the most iconic musicians of the sixties right here. Sometimes he falls under the radar, but he shouldn’t. We used to call him Mr. Cosmic when we were yunguns.

8:00 p.m. Badfinger Live at The Cowtown Ballroom, Kansas City, Missouri, April 7, 1972

Perhaps the only bona fide star power band ever signed by The Beatles for Apple Records, Badfinger made some great power pop music in its day. Betrayed by their manager and royally fucked over, their ending was a sad one with two members committing suicide. But they left us a great musical legacy and we love them here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We lost John Prine’s voice early in the COVID-19 battle. He had already been fighting cancer and just couldn’t withstand another illness on top of it. But John Prine left behind a great musical legacy, his compositions a combination of wit and introspection. Today we put him In the Spotlight where he belongs.

3:00 p.m. Eric Clapton Live in Basel, Switzerland: The Baloise Sessions, November 13-14, 2013

Eric Clapton’s Baloise Session performances from 2013 in Basel, Switzerland. Joining him on stage in his band were Andy Fairweather-Low (vocals, guitar), Paul Carrack (vocals, keyboard), Henry Spinetti (drums), Chris Stainton (keyboard), and Michelle John and Sharon White (backing vocals).

7:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Transformative Years

Along with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles are our reigning house band. We work very hard to try not to overplay either band or show favoritism, and this is difficult. However, sometimes I feel like we are remiss in playing them also. Tonight’s playlist covers songs from Rubber Soul through Magical Mystery Tour.

Sunday, as you know, is our long-playlist day and it’s the ladies’ turn today. But before that, we debut Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Willy & The Poor Boys as our Album of The Week.

The year 1969 was certainly a prolific one for Creedence. Willy & The Poor Boys was the third and final album (and their fourth overall) released that year, coming on the heels of Green River, another fine album. (Cosmo’s Factory was the other release.)

Today we give you the 40th anniversary edition of the album because it has a couple of live versions thrown in along with the great Down On The Corner jam with the incomparable Booker T & The MGs, who also appear throughout the album.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

After CCR, we turn it over to the women of rock, who still get the short end of the stick to this day. After her many years of contribution to music, Carole King just this year made it into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, as we induct rappers into a HOF that is supposed to be about rock n’ roll, not rap. Pisses me off. Aside from Carole King, you’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Nicolette Larson, Maria Muldaur, Wendy Waldman, Eva Cassidy, Valerie Carter, and many, many more. If you’re a misogynist, this is definitely not your venue. We are honoring our commitment to highlighting the ladies.

I remember the first time I heard Valerie Carter. It was sometime in the seventies when my friends and I were literally traveling around like vagabonds following our favorite bands and singers to every live venue we could get to. I also remember that I wished Valerie Carter would show up at one of them. I eventually did see Valerie perform with Linda Ronstadt at the Orpheum Theatre. The combination of the two of them was like the second coming for me. Let’s never forget that Valerie Carter helped out her fellow musicians with that voice, but that she also had her own voice.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under The Covers

There’s no denying that The Heartbreakers are one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in history, and that Tom Petty was one of the greatest songwriters on the planet. They were more than that, however. They were also one of the greatest cover bands ever, and loved to toss in remakes of others’ songs during their live performances in tribute to their favorite performers. We have two of these playlists, but in this one you’ll hear The Heartbreakers cover The Bobby Fuller Four, Bob Dylan, They Byrds, The Clash, J. J. Cale, and many more.
