We love Fats Domino here in The Mermaid Lounge. There’s a lot of discussion about where rock n’ roll started, what was the first rock n’ roll song, and the question has been asked “Was anyone singing rock n’ roll before Fats Domino?” Not sure anyone actually was, but we certainly consider our friend from New Orleans a pioneer of the genre.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur FINAL AIRING!

Today we have the final airing of our Album of The Week as sultry crooner Maria Muldaur interprets the romantic side of Bob Dylan. Don’t forget to tune it in. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll have a new choice.

A few weeks ago, we featured Emmylou Harris’s brilliant album, Wrecking Ball, as our Album of The Week. Her tour with Spyboy took Wrecking Ball on the road, although she did feature several songs from other albums, most notably, her ode to Gram Parsons, the beautiful Boulder to Birmingham. The stripped-down approach to her music continued her love of working with a variety of different musicians. The band consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Uptown Theatre, Chicago, Illinois, December 3, 1979 NEW!

One more from the road from the greatest jam band in popular music history. Tom Petty and his bandmates once said that they learned the art of improvisation on stage from going on tour with Bob Dylan. He taught them well because they were one of the best damned live bands I’ve ever seen. Bob Dylan is a master craftsman in so many ways.

To be quite honest, I had not heard of Eva Cassidy until a friend told me to find her music and listen. So I did. There could be a reason why I did not have the opportunity to know her stuff, and it’s because she didn’t live long enough to become a star. Eva Cassidy passed away from cancer at the age of 33 back in 1966. Her album, Songbird, sold over five million copies worldwide. This is a do not miss performance. And yes, Eva’s music has been added to the standard rotation as well.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur

We are winding down on our Album of the Week. We’ll have one more airing of this one Saturday, before we choose a new release for next week. For those of you who did not know Dylan had a romantic side, and that Maria Muldaur has such a great voice and interpretive skills, I suggest you listen in.

In fact, I suggest you listen in period. Because you have to pay to get this kind of music elsewhere. And by the way, there is absolutely no music outlet who features women. Not even the ones you have to subscribe to.

I remember when Tom Petty took the time to come out on stage before Lucinda Williams opened for The Heartbreakers and told the audience that they really needed to pay attention to her. They did. If by some stroke of ill fortune you haven’t paid attention to Lucinda, this is your time.

7:00 p.m. Traffic Live at The Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, New York, June 26, 1970

Traffic was formed in Birmingham, England, in April of 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. The band began as a psychedelic rock group, but diversified their sound by adding various instruments, including the Mellotron, the harpsichord and the sitar. They disbanded in 1969, bur reunited in 1970 to release their album John Barleycorn Must Die, and for this tour. Steve Winwood is another favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge.

While Bob Dylan was in Nashville recording his Nashville Skyline album, he and Johnny Cash decided to get together to record some music. Only one of those songs made it to Nashville Skyline. It was Girl From The North Country. The others were released much later. We have those recordings here for you today.

5:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Timeless, An All-Star Tribute to Hank Williams NEW!

This is one sweet album of all-stars paying their respects to a counry legend, Hank Williams, Sr. There are a number of memorable performances here, especially from Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris. However, the one that stands out for me is Tom Petty’s version of You’re Gonna’ Change (Or I’m A Gonna’ Leave). Listen for it. Other contributors include Mark Knopfler, Shery Crow, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams III, and Johnny Cash.

It’s the music selection, the genres she was able to master, and the way she defied the “experts” in her field who predicted her demise for changing music styles. She’s the package, people.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris FINAL AIRING!

We follow that up with a very good friend of Linda’s, and her career redefining album, Wrecking Ball. This is our final airing before a new album is introduced tomorrow.

Two good friends and two extraordinary songwriters get together to sing each other’s tunes. A great take.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, Indiana, July 2, 1995 NEW!

Another new performance by The Dead, this one from the Deer Creek Music Center, which has been renamed about five times since then. But no matter, when it comes to The Grateful Dead, no two shows sound the same, even when they’re part of the same tour.
